Observation and critical, rational thought are not strong points among extremists. The most diverse and tolerant things can be safe spaces until a trigger wolf-whistle sends them into full broflake mode.

I know someone who is both, and I have talked with him a lot about both. Well, we're talking about a Reaganite, "silent majority" sort of conservative, not an alt-righter, but he's pretty hardcore in his hatred of all things "liberal" or "socialist," as he understands those labels. First off, there's an immediate layer of mental separation between the fictional worlds he likes and the real world politics he endorses. Second, he prefers the more overtly utopian interpretations of TOS and early TNG - racism, classism, etc, are all "solved," conveniently off-screen, so he simply doesn't have to think about them beyond the Moral of the Day episodes about them being bad. How he reconciles that with his real world politics is pretty simple: he's not a racist, or a sexist, of course, because those are Bad Things, and any attempt to bring up all but the most overt examples like literal nazis or KKK he inevitably interprets as an accusation, which he can safely dismiss as PC hysteria because he's not racist, sexist, etc. When you do get to an example he can't dismiss that way he swings around to a "bad apple" sort of interpretation. There are always going to be a few crazy "real" racists, after all, what can you do? He is pretty good at this sort of avoidance, which is probably why he isn't as fond of, say, DS9 where they try to explore how these issues might still plague the "utopian" Federation in a vast and complex galaxy. It's probably worth mentioning that he's also a big fan of John Wayne Westerns, both specifically and stylistically. He likes black-and-white morality in his fiction. I'm not sure how deeply he still believes in that sort of morality in the real world, but he definitely wants to.
I don't know how he personally feels about the new series, but I do know that however much he avoids having to examine the actual difficulties and complexities in dealing with various forms of bigotry, and especially how they can persist even in the absence of comic book villains perpetuating them, he is sincere in believing them to be Bad Things. The only complaining I've heard from him about women or minorities in media has been over some recasting or other, and it's always a "omg but it's not canon!" or "they changed it and now it sucks!" sort of complaint.
However, to address the sub-group more generally, I think it's important to note that, while Star Trek has been progressive in its casting and storytelling, it's only been radically so on occasion, and there's no shortage of white and/or male heroes swooping in to save the day. I don't think it would take all that much failure to self-reflect to just consume it as a fun sci-fi show and not pay much attention to the deeper messages it sometimes tries to convey.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
I know a few right-wing Star Trek fans. They mostly like TOS and disregard the newer shows as "too politically correct." They have somehow convinced themselves that TOS depicts an aggressive and militaristic Starfleet where men [white men, specifically, but they rarely dare say that out loud] are "properly" in charge. In their eyes, Kirk always shoots first and doesn't take any alien crap.
I'm sometimes temped to ask them if they've ever actually watched the show.
Confirmation bias is a helluva drug ...

Star Trek is a very very American show. The "wagon train to the stars" debutted starring a white Iowa farmboy who works in outer space, his best friend "Bones" the southern good'ol'boy, and - in a situation nobody aboard considered entirely normal - a green-blooded alien. Brown people and foreigners were low-ranking and compliant everywhere else.
I think there's a lot more to it, but it's not hard to read that in a very racist manner. I think they knew their audience and did their best to portray a better future that the average Joe can identify with, and enough room for tension to slip in a Teaching Moment here and there and care to not amplify negative raciocultural stereotypes.
TNG made nationalities obsolete, which might have not been an ideal decision IMO. It's a lot flatter of a sounding board.

You know what? Everyone hated Worf's "in my culture" thing, but there it is - a foreigner with a weird religion who doesn't want to assimilate.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
This looks like a decent cross between the new look and the old idea of like actually being Star Trek instead of Motocross Starwars.
What the fuck's up with the Klingons? They've finally talked more about this. Yes they are basically this show's take on the TNG era Klingons, and while they may or may not explain the makeup look in show part of the reason is that the Klingon's look has been varied enough it's almost tradition, the stylistic choices are on purpose as each Klingon house will have their own style of dress. However they will speak Klingon and their government and houses will be ones familiar to us.

I don't mind changing the look of the Klingons. It's been done before, so doing it again isn't something I see as an issue at all. No, what gets me is that all I can really say about the trailer is that it looks like the production values are fairly high.
I am still miffed that this show will only be made available on CBS All Access, a service I have negative interest in subscribing to. Hopefully, after its original run, it'll be made available in the US on Netflix.
There is one good thing I will say, though. The visuals of the series look gorgeous. If the series has one thing going for it's that the visual effects and set designs are really pretty. It definitely looks like there was a real effort put into the look of the series and it shows. Hopefully, in spite of all the worrying rumors I've heard about, the writing and acting will be on par with the production values.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
The Klingons' design, the warp effect, the phasers -- all suggest that this is set in the Abrams-Trek universe, not the "actual" Star Trek universe.
That does not bode well, if you ask me. Abrams has done more than enough to ruin Star Trek.

Point of order. The design of the phasers for Discovery look more like the style of those for TOS. There's no pointless rotating dilly-bobber. replaced with the three position selector. Plus there is the removable fob looking thing.
So far, I'm liking the design of everything. Too bad it's hidden behind their pay wall.

I like the Abram's design, but hate the writing, let's hope in this one our characters have actual... character.

I was talking about the ships' main phasers, which fire in rapid pulses in Abrams- Trek (and in the Discovery trailer), rather than the continuous beams of the "regular" Trek universe.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
Didn't the pulse-firing phasers start with the Defiant on DS9?

I think so. The Defiant was one tough little ship.

Yes. It's not the size of the ship in the fight that matters but the size of the fight in the ship. It may be a small ship, but its fight is the size of a supercluster.

That model of the Enterprise is beautiful. It's a damn shame that television and movie productions no longer use physical models as making them was an art form all its own.

But ... but ... it's partly blocking the pavement (sidewalk). Should be parked parallel to the kerb (curb) like all the other vehicles.
