From Cleantech News — Solar, Wind, EV News (#1 Source) | CleanTechnica:

Renewable Energy Is Much Faster To Install & More Scalable Than Nuclear Power | CleanTechnica
Quote:
One major advantage renewable energy has over nuclear power (and fossil fuels) is that it can typically be installed much faster. Nuclear power plants can require 5–15 years to complete and some have taken 20 or more. (Constructing a new coal power plant can take 4 years or more. Building a new gas-powered plant generally takes several years as well.)

Installing a solar power farm can be completed in a number of months, depending upon the size and complexity of the project. Obviously, the much larger ones will require more time, but even they often can be finished in a year or less.

The same is true of wind farms. A 10 MW wind farm can be built in about 2 months and a 50 MW in approximately 6 months.

The speed at which renewables can be built and made operational is impressive. In the year 2017 alone, China installed about 52 GW of solar power. When it comes to wind power, China may install about 403 GW over the next 10 years.
Also this claim: Renewable Energy Doesn’t Get More In Subsidies Than Fossil & Nuclear Energy Have Gotten, & Continue To Get | CleanTechnica

Subsidies are good for growing new industries, but they are not so good for mature ones, and as wind and solar generation get more and more cost-effective, their subsidies should be phased out. Let the defenders of fossil fuels defend their subsidies.

The sad truth for conservatives in the U.S. is the wind and solar industries are going to continue in spite of pulling subsidies and tax incentives, because at this point the economics are there to justify such.

Coal is dead, no matter what Trump supports.

This is how coal dies — super cheap renewables plus battery storage – ThinkProgress

The last big hurdle is toppling. Batteries continue to become affordable. The long hard slog will finish in a sprint.

Quote:
The median bid price for solar plus battery storage was $36/MWh (3.6 cents/kwh), which may be lower than about three-fourths of operating coal capacity. For context, the average U.S. residential price for electricity is 12 cents/kWh.

Energy companies are being sued. As much as I favor moving away from fossil fuels, I feel it's a bit short of just to expect significant punishment of energy companies. We've all enjoyed the party, it was fun while it lasted and it enabled us to arrive at some wonderful places, along with the less desirable outcomes.

A frank admission that they knew of the consequences of CO2 for decades and acted to obscure the science in order to protect their business interests should be sufficient, if coupled with an enforcable commitment to stop that behavior.

Well, since my first 2 seconds reading of your post was that fossil fuel companies were suing clean energy companies, and that after reading the article I still don't find that implausible, these actions might be beneficial just to forestall such suing. America's all about litigation, right? and you have to get yours in first.

New energy storage system. So called 'concrete battery'. It works like the pumped hydro storage systems but instead of pumping water uphill, a set of automatic cranes pile concrete blocks into a huge tower. When the blocks are lowered back down the energy is reclaimed and fed back to the grid.

I'm very skeptical about this. Concrete uses a ton of energy to make in the first place. If it were barrels of sand that would be greener, but I suppose they wouldn't have the necessary strength to be piled so high. Also, it seems to me that maintenance costs could be rather high, and I wonder how well the system might work in windy, snowy, or icy conditions. I suppose if it's being built in a hot country that doesn't suffer much from strong winds, then it might work... :chin:

Energy Vault to build grid-level, gravity-fed battery from a tower of concrete blocks

I'm imagining this appeals to the kind of people who like hydroelectric power storage, but don't like the cost of building and maintaining dams and reservoirs.

To avoid the impact of manufacturing the concrete blocks in the first place, let's use ... gold blocks. Denser; no risk of corrosion; and prettier.

Colorado has been doing energy storage for decades. They pump water up a mountain during low demand times, then generating energy to meet peak demands.

It was common three decades ago. A lot of systems were used to store excess capacity from nuclear plants. The largest such in the world is in the US, but the Chinese are working on a bigger one now.

Pumped storage was popular and forward looking up until the taum sauk disaster happened.

Reservoir at right. Trail of devestation to the left. Miraculously, nobody died.

After that, storing gigantic amounts of water at the highest possible elevation in an unattended, automatic facility suddenly looked a little less insurable. These things need the same disaster preventions as a large hydro plant, but don't earn money nearly as fast as a hydro plant.

Interesting point. Given that AGW is thought to increase the likelihood of severe rain events, reservoirs consequently present more of a risk.

If the Taum Sauk reservoir is overtopping from rain alone, it's time to build an ark and gather the animals. It's got no natural inflow!

It breached because they pumped it higher than its design limits and left it that way for months. This was caused by faulty level sensors, which they knew about and hadn't gotten around to fixing.

Thing is, Taum Sauk wasn't designed with these sort of disasters in mind because it's got no natural inflow. Barring some human cockup, that shouldn't happen. But guess what.

It has more proper spillways and such now at least.

I was driving past the defunct Eagle Point refinery on the NJ side of the Delaware River from Philly. I looked at the giant empty oil tanks and had a new idea. New to me, anyway.

I wonder who has ever given much thought to making gigantic capacitors? Giant oil tank sized capacitors?

China has basically cut us off for taking our recycling, because Americans are too stupid to realize that you need to follow some basic manners if you want your trash to have any value. No greasy pizza boxes or drywall and construction debris in the cardboard, shopping bags are not good plastic feed stock, remove the cake before throwing away the container, things like that.

Anyway, what is a capacitor but alternating layered sheets of insulator and conductor? What if we could use our old milk jugs and Fancy Feast cans to make gigantic caps for storage?

Really, I think we'll just end up making big piles of batteries beside our alternate energy generators. The cost is still dropping, and you can't beat it for simplicity.

So far, even the best capacitors have on the order of 100 times less capacity per volume than a battery. They are also quite expensive to make. If you want to use bottles, jugs, etc. (Leyden jars), it's much worse. You would need several million pint-sized ones of those to store the energy in a single car battery.

Batteries are kind of crap, is the thing. They're complicated, messy, inefficient, dangerous, explosive, and fail quite a lot. If we can find anything else which scales, anything else might be better.

The same can be said about any form of energy storage, I suppose. Even that concrete thing is dangerous ... If you're standing under it.

Yes, the dangerous thing about energy storage is that energy is being stored. I wonder what the debate would be if the internal combustion engine or electric locomotives were introduced today. Let's see, you pour a large amount of highly flammable liquid in your vehicle or hang miles and miles of bare copper wire a couple of meters above the ground and put 10-20 thousand volts on it.
