I don't suppose you'd be open to reforming the British Empire and distributing some nuclear arms to the colonies, would you?

Re: News Miscellany
It's a definite lol. But I expect the mega churches (and "churches") will have plenty of money and staff to handle the cost of compliance. (I'm sorry, I meant "to evade these taxes".) And the Trumplicans probably don't care about small, volunteer, actually charitable actually religious churches. And they definitely don't care about "hospitals, colleges, orchestras and other historically tax-exempt organizations".
I hold out a small hope for a humiliating reversal, though.
Also, it's Obama's fault.

Leftist candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (popularly known as AMLO - i.e., his initials) elected president of Mexico by overwhelming margin.

So ... do we like this? Good for Mexico? Good for Mexican democracy?

Re: News Miscellany
Most of what I know about him, I know from John Oliver's segment from the week before the election.
And the answer to "what do we actually know about him?" is, strangely, "not much." López Obrador seems to have benevolent intentions and to genuinely want to clean up the country, but he has a massive task in front of him and I'm not sure even the Mexican Franklin Delano Roosevelt would be able to manage it in one six-year term. I think his election looks like the best outcome that could've occurred given whom he was running against. Right-wing commentators have already called him the Mexican Hugo Chávez, but right-wing commentators always compare leftists to Hugo Chávez, especially when they're Hispanic or Latino. The much closer comparison to me looks like Bernie Sanders, for better - earnest focus on cleaning up corruption - and for worse - thinness of policy details in candidate platform. (Of course, right-wing commentators compared Sanders to Chávez, too. Fuckem.)
Anyway, good overall, I think, but he's got impossible expectations upon him that no human could possibly fulfil. He probably won't actively make things worse, at least.

I've an off and on fun game of comparing the last thing Donald Trump said to Hugo Chavez, or any other random dictator from around the world. Saparmurat Niyazov is a favourite, what with his renaming months, a golden statue that rotated to face the sun at all times, and stashing money in Deutsche Bank.
Oh, and just for fun:

The quotes really were the best part of this game.

Usually when a lion has killed and eaten a human, the lion gets put down on the assumption that it's developed a taste for manflesh. Maybe in this case they don't know which lions did the natural thing.

A running vehicle in a closed garage? Sounds like a suicide pact to me. Who doesn't know the danger of that?
