this meme popped up on my fb feed today. it was posted by a very liberal friend of mine. this is what it said:

Liberals use their credentials as liberals to use racial slurs with impunity.

I live in Maryland suburbia, everyone here is a white liberal working for the government making household incomes of $150-180, they are all racists, and talk openly at BBQs and such about how the government needs to help the lesser peoples.

I don't see a problem with it. It isn't funny, but I don't think it is intended to be. It intentionally apes the stereotypical setup of a racist/sexist/ableist joke and then subverts it by not making fun of the people listed. I wouldn't repost/share it, but I don't hold the silly notion that it is racist to point out racism.

I mostly agree with you that free speech shouldn't be answered with physical violence.

I also think that there is no point in reasoning with some people. I think of the horrific racists that I grew up with. They don't believe in agreeing to disagree. I won't just punch such a person in the face, I will (have historically and would still do so if it comes up) invite them to further physical discourse while I make fun of them because that is what they do understand: censure and threats.

Post WW2 in Germany, there was a process of de-Nazification. It was a long, ugly process, humiliating for a lot of people. And the squashing of free speech tasted bad, but less bad than the sinuses still getting whiffs of the ashes of Auchwitz. Free speech is also something a fascist will use liberally, until they have the power to take it from everyone else. (Helps with the mass killin'/other oppression they have planned.)

Ultimately, Germany got this: Volksverhetzung - Wikipedia, a robust set of hate laws. Other countries also have a fairly robust set as well. Unsurprisingly Sweden. Also the UK, and interestingly, Russia. I just hope the US Republic is robust enough to maintain that first amendment no holds barred ideal? Cuz otherwise, that's a whole lotta military toys and a whole lotta nukes to be put in the hands of an autocrat who rode into power on a wave of racism.

no, but it is racist in nature. i know gay is a culture and not a race, but it all gets mixed together and is the same dif anyhow, so let's go with it.

keep in mind that i think we all are racist by nature and make distinctions from a position of superiority. i don't think it is ethical, but natural. i think how we deal with it is key. we have a hard time dealing with our monkey instincts. that conflict is what makes us human. to feel comforted being around what is like you is to feel that what is like you is better than what is not. that's not bad, so long as you don't feel a need to force anyone different to also believe that.

do you know who wrote that meme i posted? a white guy. i bet he's the bartender. do you know what white male privilege actually is? it isn't access to power and money. that is just a product of the real privilege: we are allowed to believe we are superior. but you shouldn't blame white guys for that. the whole world's in on it. being a white guy these days pretty much means you have no say culturally. we're pretty much Hitler. straight white men have a lot less clout than you think these days. once they see they are beaten and all remaining groups also see themselves as victims...well...

so that meme just does what we all do naturally and then says pretend you didn't see that and look over there. it thinks it supports a coming together but it just maintains the division in a corrupted way and so the message is corrupt. it still keeps people in their groups. as long as people respect and care for each other i'm ok with that. whatever. celebrate and unite in difference, i say! it is the pretending that it isn't happening and that you're not partaking in it that bothers me and has all kinds of potential to go wrong.
