Is This Legit?
So while using my computer, I saw a Windows icon in my taskbar asking me to get Windows 10. When I opened the thing, it claimed to be offering me a free copy. What the shit?
So is it, or did I somehow get hit with some malefactor trying to fuck me over. Full virus sweep? Anyone else receive such an offer? I've uploaded a copy of the image for your perusal.

Official release of Windows 10 isn't until July 29.

Re: Is This Legit?
Yes, but MS pushed an update that ... reminds you not to forget about it. Pretty shitty practice.

Re: Is This Legit?
Not that they haven't done it everywhere else already, but right in the OS is certainly different.
When MS tried to insert random self-advertising in Win98, they took huge amounts of shit for it. I guess it took 17 years for standards to decay enough for this to become normal/acceptable.

Software as a service is a very annoying trend.

Re: Is This Legit?
If Microsoft do change to a subscription service, it will significantly enhance the adoption of Linux by companies.
Many companies could run their operations fine using Linux - maybe better than with Windows in many instances. It seems that Windows is still used mainly for historical reasons and the prevailing (true) perception of, "That's what most other companies do".

If they still can. The current generation of computers is only the first to come with compulsory DRM.

Re: Is This Legit?
When I used to program Commodore Pets, the favourite error message that told you nothing was 'Syntax error'.
I looked through the ROMs that held the operating system and found the table of error messages - there was one error message, 'Formula too complex error', that I tried my best to make appear but never could: the most complex possible formulae that you could fit into one 'line' of PET input never caused any problems.
Another operating system I programmed (maybe early MS DOS, I forget...) had a 'Hardware or software error'. That's a pretty all-encompassing error message! I wonder why they even bothered with any other error messages.

Re: Is This Legit?
Soooooooooooo many computers can't upgrade and not even Microsoft can tell you why... That's pretty much what the error message is. Meaningless.
