I'm still pretty :nerdrage: about it, but that's less that I don't like Ben Afleck as Batman and more that I just don't like Ben Afleck, period. This is, like, one step above Nick freaking Cage playing Batman.

Behold, Free Thought Talk and Chatters and Patrons of the Free Thought Talk and Chat Emporium, I bear ... news.

News the First: The impending sequel to Superman Man of Steel has now been entitled thusly: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. And let me assure you, the fan community is reacting to that just as you imagine they would. My own favorite being:

@vqnerdballsboy all you "Dawn of Justice" haters are gonna feel real stupid when they announce Michelle Trachtenberg as part of the cast

Also, tengentally related to DC and Superman Man of Steel news: David S. Goyer announces to the world that he's a sexist shithead.

Quote:
Host Mazin explained his own view of the character and Goyer tossed in his two cents, which we’ve transcribed here:

Quote:
Craig Mazin: The real name for She-Hulk was Slut-Hulk. That was the whole point. Let’s just make this green chick with enormous boobs. And she’s Hulk strong but not Hulk massive, right? … She’s real lean, stringy…

David S. Goyer: She’s still pretty chunky. She was like Chyna from the WWE.

Mazin: The whole point of She-Hulk was just to appeal sexistly to ten-year-old boys. Worked on me.

Goyer: I have a theory about She-Hulk. Which was created by a man, right? And at the time in particular I think 95% of comic book readers were men and certainly almost all of the comic book writers were men. So the Hulk was this classic male power fantasy. It’s like, most of the people reading comic books were these people like me who were just these little kids getting the shit kicked out of them every day… And so then they created She-Huk, right? Who was still smart… I think She-Hulk is the chick that you could fuck if you were Hulk, you know what I’m saying? … She-Hulk was the extension of the male power fantasy. So it’s like if I’m going to be this geek who becomes the Hulk then let’s create a giant green porn star that only the Hulk could fuck.
He also talks shit about my personal good friend Martian Manhunter. So, I feel totally justified in calling for him needing a good ol' cockpunching.

He pretty obviously has never actually read She-Hulk. But then, I have a soft spot for Jennifer, who's witty, self-confident, smart as a whip, and fully capable of kicking butt with the best of them. (And sometimes, depending on the writer, aware of the fourth wall.)

This is not to say that the vast majority of female comics characters aren't drawn and portrayed in appallingly unrealistic and shockingly sexist ways. But that's another issue.

As I read in the comments: She Hulk was created after the Incredible Hulk was a popular television show and in the wake of the Bionic Woman having some success as well. Stan Lee and ... another guy, please forgive me... decided to get ahead of the curve and created She Hulk just to be a lady version of their popular Hulk. What happened after that, well, now you know the rest of the story. (The writers have done some wonderful work with what could have been a real nothing of a creation.)

Yes it's sexist shit but the idea that she was created as fuck bait for the hulk s fucking stupid in regards to actual continuity. Jennifer is Bruce's cousin for fucks sake.

On one hand, I'm glad I have my fingers in all the pies that tell me cool new movies are on the way. But there are a couple of movies I'm already fucking tired of hearing every little thing about. One is the Star Wars and Trax movies. Like :gah: I DON'T GIVE A FUCK (yet) JUST FILM THE GODDAMNED MOVIE ALREADY OKAY. And the other is the Batman Five Superman: Dawn of Justine. Today a photoshoop of how the Man of Steel's look hasn't really changed from the last movie. And then the glorious shooping of this showed up.

I read something like that, it was some alternate take where Alfred was acting as a master criminal just to give Bruce something to do. Don't remember where I read it, though.

A couple of developments coming out of SDCC. One is the release of the first look at Wonder Woman for the upcoming Kramer versus Kramer Superman v Batman Dawn of Justice. My first thought is that I don't hate it. Gal Gadot looks amazony. It looks a little enough like the New52, which thanks to the amazing artwork by Cliff Chiang, I don't dislike as much as I used to. Of course it's not perfect or anything. At least in this still it's entirely too desaturated. You can hardly tell that the top is red at all. But that's Snyder for you. He hates color.

The second bite was at first just a news rumor. At the panel they played some teaser thing. I've seen a camcording of the clip. It's basically the preamble to the big fight scene from Dark Knight Returns. Compete with mechsuit Batman and glowy eyed Superman. It's pretty much the only book about Batman that made me hate Batman. (I realize that isn't fair because it's not like Batman wrote it.) So, it's pretty much nothing I want in a movie and less than nothing I want from a Superman sequel and an even worse way to build into a Justice League.

But everyone else seems to be crumbling their crackers in that soup and I'm just over here like w t f.

It's pretty much just the overall Millerness of it all. The terrible characterizations of Catwoman and Superman. And the bullshit big fight at the end. "I want you to remember the one man who beat you." As if. If you have to fake your death to end a fight I'd hardly call that winning. Nevermind that Batman didn't beat Superman by himself.

I don't dislike DKR overall. It's just some of the details that really stick in my craw.

And that is why I stopped reading Batman Beyond. I liked the mystery of not knowing what happened to Batman between the animated series and the beginning of Beyond. It was what kept me coming back to the show. I didn't want some writer with none of the talent of Timm or Dini or, god help us, McDuffie*, filling in the blanks and destroying all the mystery.

Now, if you excuse, I'm going to go scour that from my brain so I can forget I read it.

*If that's ambiguous, it's 'god help us' because McDuffie was a genius and we lost him.

The one scene above with Commissioner Gordon reminiscing may have spawned a thousand fanfictions that happen like the Beyond comic details, but at least it could be argued that the relationship, romanticized though it was, was still professional. Laying it out like that sours good memories and feels terribly sordid. Though technically legal it's still unethical for professors to sleep with students. It's not just an age disparity but the imbalance of power in the relationship. Plus, Bruce is supposed to just be playing the part of the wealthy industrialist playboy philanthropist. He definitely has some kind of relationship with Talia, and lets not forget Selina either. Now when elderly Ms Waller says that finding DNA of Bruce Wayne was easy it's necessary for her to qualify it and not just a cute aside for the audience to snicker at.

Here's the back-story I constructed of Barbara and Bruce's relationship based on just what you see in the shows, before I ever saw Mystery of the Batwoman even. In Old Wounds we see Barbara embracing the life as Batgirl and dumping, or clearly moving toward dumping, Dick because he wants out of the life and she wants in. At sometime after that she starts dating Bruce, but it's clear from that episode that she already wants to. In Batman Beyond she had given up that life and is bitter about it and constantly warning Terry off it.

From this I reached the reasonable conclusion that she broke up with Bruce because when she was ready to hang up the cape he wasn't. We already saw that she was willing to dump Dick in the reverse situation, so it fits with her character. It baffles me that anyone would need it to be more dramatic and complicated than that, but then I am apparently missing the shipper gene.
