I started playing Blue Dragon. It kind of reminds me of Final Fantasy V with the job system and the fact that you have a small party that can't be switched out (at least, I guess once I get the 5th person it'll let me use them all -- it'd be stupid to only be able to use 4 of 5).

The achievements* are fucking horrifying though - level all jobs with all characters to 99? Collect one every item and fight every monster? A bunch of mini games you have to get through perfectly? Oh well, I can do it if I'm careful.

ETA: Erimir should definitely never play this game -- you can examine literally everything lying around and get items, money, or stat upgrades from them. Even "Nothing" which apparently some guy rewards you for collecting later.

* Speaking of OCD people going batty from games now! I can't let a game stay incomplete on my profile!

I do, but I'd never heard of that game.

ETA: Ah, I see...it came out before I had an Xbox and wasn't paying much attention to release for that system.

Oh, I figured the mention of achievements would have tipped you off. I don't think any other system has them (ghetto PS3 trophies aside) except that Games for Windows LIVE, which is the same thing.

You can find the game for a couple of bucks I'm sure, if you're jonesing for an RPG. It's a good value for its length (3 discs, and the longest Xbox game at the time), I guess. So far it's not anything particularly special, but how many are, really? I already bought most of the big RPGs for the system (Basically, I'm just missing Fallout 3, Star Ocean, and maybe The Last Remnant, but I'm debating whether I should get the latter at all) so I have higher hopes for Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia, which are widely praised.

Xbox Achievements tend to get blurred in my head with PS3 trophies, the Windows Live version of themselves, and every copycat system implemented by individual games (a lot of Impulse and Steam games have them now, for example...I know that Demigod, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Team Fortress 2 all do).

FWIW, I've heard bad thing about the Star Ocean on the 360. Apparently, there's quite a bit of deus ex machina going on, where powerful NPCs swing in to win most of the set piece fights for you.

That's not the kind of thing that could turn me off playing it. An RPG has to be truly dreadful for me to turn up my nose at it.

I'm worried I won't like The Last Remnant because I've heard it's very buggy and frustrating, and the battle system sounds retarded. Like, apparently you can't actually choose what you want to do or whom to target; the game gives you a a handful of options you can pick from each turn, and that's all you get. I'm not sure if it's smart enough to, say, give you Heal when you're injured, or if it's just random. And you can't equip things on your squad members unless they specifically ask you for that item, and so you could have all this cool shit lying around unused.

The PC version apparently fixed a bunch of problems and added auto-save after each battle--one complaint was the long strings of battles that you had to start over from scratch if you die--but I haven't upgraded this thing since I built it for Oblivion.

Yah, I've heard that your ability to to control your party in TLR is awful. On the other hand Tycho/Jerry over at Penny Arcade raved about it, and I usually dig the games he likes, so it's on my mental list of games to pick up if I see them in a bargain bin.

That's rich coming from the guy that hated Tales of Symphonia and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time because they didn't let you control your AI allies like a turn based system would.

ETA: Anyway, stay away from the 360 version even if you see it... The PS3 or PC versions are probably much better.

ETA2: Wait a second, can you play Games for Windows on your Xbox? I was reading a review on Amazon and they said if your PC isn't up to snuff, install it on the Xbox hard drive. I will definitely get the PC version if I decide to pick it up, if that works.

Supposedly you can, but I don't know how. I have a friend who keeps threatening to come over and show me, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

So, I reinstalled Rome: Total War the other day after feeling a desire to crush mighty empires and being unable to find my copy of Medieval 2: Total War (Total War being my go-to series for mighty empire crushing). I played for a few hours but was pretty 'meh' after a while. So, I go online to look for mods and find Rome: Total Realism. I cannot stress enough how epically awesome this mod is. It is RTW as it should have been. Absolutely beautiful and brilliant on every level.

Any Total War fans out there are strongly advised to check it out.

I'm really looking forward to Little King's Story for Wii, but it's not out anywhere near me yet.

So yeah I got this PS3 thing and everyone kept telling me I had to play Infamous.

...and thanks to those motherfuckers, I hadn't even turned on my computer all week until today. Holy shit that game kicked ass.

I haven't played a 2D platform fighting game in years. But watching this video reminds me of how incredibly awesome it is to watch a skilled player put together combo-chains.

For fighting games I grew attached to the fast pace and feel of DOA 3 and 4. I tried to play some others, but even Tekken felt clunky and slow.

I played through Kameo, an action game where you have to figure out how to proceed and win fights by morphing into different creatures with unique abilities. Kinda weaksauce Zelda or something. Easy, too, but I nearly shit my pants when I cranked up Expert mode. Couldn't get past the first group of enemies and into the first door!

I was planning on playing Fable: The Lost Chapters but my 360 won't run it (yes, it's on the backwards compatibility list). Anyone have this problem and know how to fix it? From the goggle, it seems like anytime anyone calls MS they're just like format the hard drive, but fuck that. It doesn't work now, so I have no reason to believe it will work after I lose all my saved games. Doesn't seem to be restricted to any particular game.

"The game could not start. Please download the game again." <-- nonsense error message.

Edit: Busted out the Xbox that I inherited from my older brother. My god this looks like shit on my old $100 TV (I use my monitor, coupled with the VGA cable for the Xbox 360. It was the perfect solution for when I was in the dorm). I'd still be interested in how to fix the 360 but this'll do, I guess. Maybe my eyes will adjust enough that I can resolve stuff. How did we live like animals for so long, and not even suspect?

I got an ink cartridge for my printer and it had a free $10 Wild Coins coupon for HP Games. Anyone or their kids or something play those games? PM me and I'll send you the redemption code for the wild coins.

Inorite? The invention of HD ranks right up there with the Agricultural Revolution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in lifting us out of our squalor.

I have both F:TLC and a 360 at home...if I remember, I'll test and see if mine will fire up.

In other news, I finally broke down and spent money on an iPhone app. They found my weak spot: Firaxis made a version of Civilization for the iPhone. I figure I own every other incarnation of Civ ever made (except the heretical Call to Power series), I can spend $5 on this one. It's pretty much a port of Civ Revolution, which I never really enjoyed (sure, I could play stripped down Civ sitting on my couch, or I could walk down the hall and play real Civ on my PC), but the novelty of being able to play on a mobile is cool.

I really, REALLY didn't need to know that.
