Default "Bomb" Found in Austin

There were reports of a "bomb" found outside a women's clinic that performs abortions here in Austin yesterday. I don't know why they put bomb in quotes or refrained from saying 'bomb' on the radio news, but they describe it as a device composed of explosive materials that was designed to do serious damage to people, which sounds like a bomb to me. It seems that today the news reports are saying "pipe bomb".

Wow, I've heard of soft language but damn, it went from bomb to explosive device to "device composed of explosive materials"
Sounds like a slight attempt to lessen the impact of the action.
It's interesting to see how news uses language to change the undertones of the report.
It always bugs me when I see a news story where some gun wielding bad guy is "gunned down" by the police. The criminal may have "shot" someone or "shot at" the police but the police "gunned him down."

Do these abortion clinic bombings count as terrorism among Bush's base (arabic: al Qaeda)? I've never been clear on that.

There was a bomb found at a Jewish temple in Muskogee, Oklahoma a few weeks back. Who needs al Qaeda when we have our own bunch of loonies?

Why don't they use "IED?"

It's all the rage these days...

No, they fall under the heading of "Christian Love".

Well...

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4756526.html
The suspect was charged in federal court with using a weapon of mass destruction; manufacturing an explosive material and violating a federal provision that guarantees freedom of access to clinic entrances. He remains in federal custody without bond, said Erik Vasys, spokesman for the FBI's San Antonio office.

?!

I would dearly love to see what the federal definition is. Would have thought it would come under 'Destructive Device', under the 1934 NFA.
