I designed a String Pipe toy and put it on Thingiverse.

Made a 3d animation.

The curve part was "chua's circuit" like a few pages ago, implemented in python and hit with a rabid weasel until it fit in that hourglass thing.

I've been building a new screwthread-profile generator for openscad:

And things are going well after a few hitches. It's not ready yet though. It's working, but not "perfect". I want to go a step beyond what others have done or what point having it?

Which has meant printing hordes of little calibration objects 5-at-a-time to measure and correct. And you know what's annoying? Losing track of which is which. And you what else is annoying? Printing teeny tiny numbers on them. Because they never turn out. 5, 6, 8, and 9 especially are impossible to print small and still tell apart. So I invented a variety of moonspeak to print instead.

From left to right is blank, cube, sad maraca, mallet, gun, happy maraca, stealth bomber, [s]staplegun[/s] boot, drone, and half-eaten-cookie. Approval by the UTF8 emoji committee has been held up by legalese.

Seriously though, they print legibly down to 7mm. With these, a touch of sharpie, and notches along the edge, I can tell which calibration objects are which. They're a lot more radially unique than regular numbers also, you can't mistake a 9 for a 6. Not even a 5 for a 2, being they're mirrored.

So, this is why I needed moonspeak. I've been calibrating like a madman.

The efforts weren't in vain. I've written a new openscad library for generating screw threads (also on my site) and I hope it's awesome.

Garden hose, tapered and straight pipe, coax connector, broom connector, several kinds of leadscrew, imperial and metric nuts & bolts and any other random piece of junk with threads on it which wasn't nailed down -- everything I've generated to fit them finally works.

I understand there's quite a few libraries for this already, which is why I worked so long on this, I felt compelled to polish it as much as I could. I've made it fast, flexible, robust, to-the-spec, and included uncommon features. Usually you get to pick two.

It can calculate tapered pipe threads which aren't approximated. Also, buttress threads. :beavis:

It can make leadscrews which fit without being hilariously over/under-size.

It can make trapezoidal leadscrews subtracted from mirrored trapezoidal leadscrews at 15,000 vertexes on the crappiest computer I could find because fuck CPU's.

I don't know what this tiny strange quick-release plate is. I can't find anything like it anywhere on the internet and ended up having to print one.

I designed this circuit and wrote some code for the teeny microcontroller. It's to go on-board a model plane so that a control system that's been obsolete for about fifty years can be used again for nostalgia and fun. I shall get the PCBs made next week.

Here's what the PCBs should look like (without the connector headers fitted). Board is 35x15 mm. I shall wait a couple of days to see if I can spot any errors before I get the first batch of PCBs made.

The boards are built and I'm using two of them to work the rudder and elevator on a cheap R/C conversion of a foam toy glider. Here one of them is driving the elevators via some home-built magnetic actuators. I designed and 3D-printed the bobbins for winding the coils on, and the little magnet holders that are fastened to the elevators and hold the magnets inside the coils.

Yes - they're meant to flap like that! It's an old-fashioned way of giving (sort of) proportional control via bang-bang actuators. The plane can't react fast enough to actually follow the rapid full up / full down elevator inputs and averages out the fluctuations. The radio control causes a bias to give, for example, more 'up' than 'down' and the plane then climbs.

The same driver board can also work a rapidly oscillating motor rather than magnetic actuators. This gives more precise control and by varying both the mark/space ratio and the oscillation frequency it's possible to coax one motor to work both rudder and elevator with proportional control of both.

I wanted to drive a CNC setup using lines around a Mandelbrot set (lemniscates). I calculated gradients and stuff for a bit and threw in OpenGL to visualize the result. Then I got distracted by this hairy thing and now I'm playing around with it instead. It looks kind of real.

I just had an idea for a Discovery channel show. We could call it "Ancient Ailerons".

We don’t quite have a creativish writing thread so...
A game Of Pubg mobile, a battle royal style game.

“Damn Fucking camper!” I imagine he screamed when the final bullet tore through his armor.
———
The plane route ended across the Military Base. Midway through the flight a squad member signals jumping there, the other two having already thrown themselves from the plane at the beginning of the route to become someones fodder. I’m the only other left. He jumps for the set of buildings at base, I jump for the road behind, where it’s really easy to see the vehicles, pick up a jeep and head to off base housing to loot.
Having collected my gear I grab my jeep and speed around the western side of the base past the sniper tower and through the real vehicle entrance of the base, musing that everything is quiet and I never use the real entrance, my squadmate is alive, so let’s do this! I park the jeep in the bushes and climb the stairs to the northern most building parallel to the road looting it, suddenly all hell breaks loose, my squadmate goes down and then out in seconds. Almost to the other side of the roof I freeze near a vent for cover, realizing I just walked into a situation I know little about and isn’t that just always the way! Your random teammate survives just long enough to pull up, get within trowing distance and they die.
Swivel in place is all I have now. I’m pretty sure they heard me but did they track me in all the commotion? I’m not sure. I can hear them walking about down below, stalking the halls. If they come up the far stairs I’m an open target but I can immediately fire back, the near stairs I can see better but will need to move to fire the vent pipe is blocking my weapon. It sounds like they’re headed towards the far stairs, I’m so glad the building doesn’t have standard indoor roof access.
Then Silence. Everyone is quiet.
Someone breaks, they jump out a window and make for the road, I stand up, sight in, fire, and then crouch back down, they manage to reach the tree but can’t get behind it before my bullets meet them, they poof instantly, hmm, bot or separate teams, I’m unsure but I know I saw two marks and heard two different steps. Several seconds go by, nothing, then bandages. Ha! I knew there was someone being sly here but I bet I can be slyer, even though if he wasn’t sure before, he’s certain now that I’m here and I’m waiting.
A few more moments go by, a tasty beverage is had by the person I suspect killed my teammate. A reload, distinctive, DP-28, and then an AR. Does he know I can hear all of this, I’m unsure but it goes back to silence. I do nothing. The playzone changes, outside our area but not off the westerly section of military island, we wait. I take notice of a three wheel bike nearby and a car further off, check my map and think that this would be a really bad time for the rare random fire glitch.
Continued waiting. He refuses to move and I refuse to lose this battle. The blue zone crosses us. I hear him drink up more, I certain now know my insanity is not for naught, the waiting game is still on and he must be thinking that he’s crazy to think I’m still around, a set of gunshots then nothing, even into the blue zone, who would be mad enough to not boost or heal, to not even reload!?
He breaks! I hear him vault the window, straight at the playzone with his back towards me! I stand, take aim, a burst of automatic fire erupts, cutting him down, he too poofs instantly, a lone wolf or last of his squad, no one will ever know but that’s now my DP-28 and my three wheeled bike to ride on out of here!
Perhaps camping to some but I like to think that if my predatory stalking has made at least one person just a little bit more afraid of their surrounding then I’m doing my job.

Almandine garnet crystal, rather large.

Crystals plural. Two at least, maybe more inside that 4-pound chunk of schist.

Wonder what I should do with them.
