Oh, I forgot about that one. Good times!

There hasn't been a good, simple dungeon crawler in ages. :oldman:

Some favorites that I have not seen mentioned here include the Genghis Khan series (from Koei's Historical Simulation Series) and the Hitman series from IO Interactive.

Ah! I loved that game back in the day. :)

Most of mine have already been mentioned. Pirates!, Bard's Tale 1&2 (3 had problems for me) and Wasteland for the C64. Honorable mention to Potty Pigeon for audacity while still being enjoyable. Unlike Street Racer and Libya 64.

I loved Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on the Playstation, and before that Rings of Power and Might and Magic on the Sega Genesis.

Balders Gate 2 was good, though only for the side quests. I hated the main storyline. I really liked both Temple of Elemental Evil and Evil Genius, but both had memory problems for me. FreeCol was horribly addictive but had enough flaws to shake me off.

PC games:

Half life 1, 2, ep1, ep2, Opposing force, and Blue shift. All very excellent games!

Total Annihilation. Excellent strategy game I had many fun times lan'ing that game!

Portal! One cannot dislike Portal!

Decent 2.

Decent Freespace.

Console Games:

Halo 1-2. 3 felt kinda weak to me but, I bought my X-box for Halo.

Super Mario 3. It's a timeless classic!

Legend of Zelda Links Awakening. Played it on Gameboy an excellent game!

Legend of Zelda Four Swords. Excellent four player game but to damn short!

Metal Gear Solid. It's an excellent game with great twists!

Fable. No other game gave you so much freedom!

All I can think of at the moment.

I second Metal Gear Solid, great game for the time.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Resident Evil series or Silent Hill. They rawked. As did Final Doom on PS1. Ah, great times. That crying baby level still haunts me to this day.

I've liked the Tomb Raiders although I haven't played the latest two.

I like Counterstrike. Great game.

ETA: And Soul Reaver, the sequel to Blood Omen. And I have Bloodrayne on my Steam account now, but I haven't played it for ages. Too many little eyes wondering why the lady cut the man in half.

Daggerfall was the buggiest piece of shit that I ever played adoringly for hours and hours and hours.

Nobody's mentioned Master of Orion 2, yet? Kingdoms rose, prospered, fell and decayed out of memory in the time that I spent playing that game. MOO3 took away the micro-managing, the developers not understanding that this was exactly why I, and many others, loved MOO2 so much. Galactic empire, one widget at a time, plzkthx.

I remember getting stuck between polygons* and spending hours and hours and hours (if not days) devising ingenious ways to get out.

...Each and every time a new adventure unto itself!

MOO2 was an awesome game, which made MOO3 all the more tragic for sorta sucking.

MOO2 rocked. After the disappointment over MOO3, I picked up GalCiv II as my next 4x space game, I thought it was pretty good. I don't think I have a 'best game evar', personally. There's so many good ones, it depends on what I'm in the mood for.

True about MOO2.

Egor brought up the Decent: FreeSpace series. Good one, that.

OTOH, I never much liked the Wing Commander games, though I've a friend crazy about them. Come to think of it, he's the same one with mastery of the Pirates! cannons in his sleep.

Exactly. I mean, I'm into Hitman, Daggerfall, Dragon Warrior, Starflight, and Genghis Khan (just for a quick sample). Otherwise, what exactly do they all have in common? I can also appreciate advanced graphics and music (e.g. RTW) yet their presence is not required (e.g. Genghis Khan*).

*The original orchestral scores and concept art for Genghis Khan I and II are excellent, however.

BTW, it is remarkable how much drastically more likely I am to agree with you (or say, Seebs) when the thread is about gaming...

I've got so many favourites, spread out over the years, that its impossible to write down a defintive list, but here's the ones that immediately come to mind, the ones that had my complete attention from the moment I installed them:

Final Fantasy 7
Deus Ex
No One Lives Forever
Fallout 3
Anachronox
KOTOR 1 & 2
The Civilisation series
Starcraft
C&C Generals
Age of Empires

I would include The Longest Journey for its epic scope and excellent voice acting and dialog, but the plot was so fucking lame that with all those redeeming qualities I still couldn't get past about a quarter way into the game before it irritated me so much I had to quit. "World of science/World of magic" is just the lamest fantasy device in existence (for the same reason, I hated the "Chronicles of Thomas Covenent" shit my friends kept recommending when I was younger). And plot makes a big difference to immersion in Adventure games. For someone who doesn't mind those kind of lame overarching themes and wants a well-told story, I'd still recommend it.

One series of adventure games I'll give an honorary mention, although I wouldn't put them in my best all time list, is the Syberia series.

Another game that didn't make the list but deserves honorary mention is Bethesda's Morrowind, the first fantasy game I enjoyed in a long time, in part because they made a conscious effort to avoid being too stock fantasy (like the way they made Dwarves an extinct race, calling Dwarves and Wood Elves "Dwemer" and "Dunmar", had a decent lore explanation for having a guild of assasins and made the thieves "guild" an informal and undercover affair). The asthetics were also highly original in places. The subsequent Oblivion tacked so much to the center with its Roman/Celtic asthetic and other devices that it did nothing for me. The reason Morrowind doesn't make the list is just a long list of poor play mechanics. Brilliant but deeply flawed.

Myth I and II. best real time tactics games I've played. Especially at the time when they were up against hack and slash resource gathering games (warcraft II). Great multiplayer and great expansions.

Myst. Mainly because it's what ultimately got me into photography.

Secret of Mana. RPG with a realtime element.

Largely agreed. You said it better than I was about to. "Brilliant but deeply flawed" really sums up the TES series from the start and as a whole, imho.

And thank you in return. I forgot about Half-life. Although by the time the subsequent entries in the series came out I'd gone off that format of game. Still, Half-life just blew me away when it came out.

Farren,

Morrowind is probably my favorite rpg of all fucking time. I dug oblivion as well but not as much. I love their game setup all around though.

Bey did you go ballistic on mods for Morrowind, like I did? Some of them were fine and as I've said to Adam, extended the games life by months of playing time. That's why I'm gonna hang onto Fallout 3 instead of giving it to my nephews, and check out the mod scene in a year or two.
