Re: Is this Star Wars nerd-rage worthy?
I liked everything about the small shots interspersed with black, except the cross guard lightsaber. Sure having a cross guard that blocks light sabers is great (assuming it exists inside the T and it's not just to floating guards with a mid section that can be cut right through) however having a cross guard that will burn through you if it touches you is pretty pointless. It's the same reason medieval swords with cross guards didn't have spikes or lit torches on them. Given that there are multiple grip techniques of putting a finger over the cross, my first thought was ouch!

Re: Is this Star Wars nerd-rage worthy?
Yeah, my first thought was, "Why do the newer Star Wars movies keep insisting on giving the bad guys light sabers that would be more dangerous to the wielder than to his/her opponents?"
Granted, the standard light saber has a glaringly-obvious flaw in that there's no kind of hand guard. Any remotely competent opponent would just slide his blade down yours and lop your hands off. I always figured that the "official explanation" is that the beam emitter must produce some sort of invisible force field where the blade emerges, and that it protects the user's hands and prevents an enemy from doing just that.

The funny thing is, that's kinda the actual answer in a lot of Expanded Universe material. Google 'cortosis' sometime...

Re: Is this Star Wars nerd-rage worthy?
Teh original light saber duel is based on Kendo, a very stylized martial art. Light sabers as such are technicological upgrades of bamboo Kendo swords. Likewise Darth Maul's double-bladed thingamabob was apparently a technicological upgrade of a bo staff. So now we have moved from Japanese originals to technicological upgrades of European medieval swordery.
I am shocked to find that nobody has linked yon evilness in black to the Black Knight of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Obviously there are 3 blades because 3 shall be the number of the counting.

Re: Is this Star Wars nerd-rage worthy?
One big difference, of course, is that in kendo, our "swords" actually have hand guards, as do real katanas. The tsuba of the shinai acts as a hand guard, and in a way, so does the swollen portion of the shinai, just above the tsuba. That swollen portion is used to "catch" an opponent's shinai, and deflect it away from your hands if he tries to slide his blade down yours.
That having been said, probably the most commonly-used attack in kendo is kote -- a strike at your opponent's wrist. (The wrists are protected by heavily-padded gloves, called kote -- hence the name for the strike.)

Re: Is this Star Wars nerd-rage worthy?
Has the Official Star Wars trailer Star Wars: The Force Awakens UK teaser | Official HD been posted? In this thread or another?
I can't see it, and I need to refer to it.

Furthermore, this means at some point all new Star Wars spin-offs will matter, because they will all be official. I don't know how I feel about that.

Thrawn was so racist, he could have been in the trek universe where once you meet a garbage collector you know his race is a garbage collector.

I think the Thrawn trilogy would have been excellent, even the Jedi Academy trilogy.

Re: Is this Star Wars nerd-rage worthy?
A new teaser for the Star Wars dropped the other day.
Some people are hyped but it hasn't hit me yet.
I was, however, impressed with the practical prop of BB8. The "soccer ball" droid.
