Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Continuing my habit of running behind the pack, I watched Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang last night. I enjoyed it.
It was one of those experiences where you're along for the ride, happily going wherever the movie takes you ... then after it's over you think about what you just saw and go, "What the hell?" Had someone described this movie to me I never would have rented it.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Beowulf - Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Angelina Jolie
Before seeing it tonight I was unaware that this wasn't a standard movie. It was shot using performance capture digital animation, which uses human actors as models that are then replaced with on-screen digital replicas. The result is interesting with sometimes stunning visuals but on the whole doesn't quite work. And while A. Jolie actually seems to benefit from this treatment (as she almost appeared to be able to act for once) everybody else seemed ... wooden.
The movie itself was based on the well known epic poem. And when I say "based on" I mean it was a movie about a hero killing monsters. It has all the ingredients: action, (very) graphic violence and nudity. All in all I liked it more than I expected.

Well yes, but it's animated so it doesn't really count, does it?

It's Angelina Jolie, nude. ANYTHING counts!!!
OK some may say I have an unhealthy fixation on Ms. Jolie, but damnit, she's hot.

As I understand it, she shot the scene in the buff, which was later "drawn" over. So fap away, boys.

Please rent Gia and then proceed to shut the fuck up about the supposed "nudity" in Beowulf.
I saw Horton Hears a Who. Very cute and pretty funny. Also the animation was beautiful.

A tip o' the hat to inaccuracies in film!*
(*of course, a lot of historically-accurate films would also be historic bores, so bring on the flubs)

It is kind of silly that 2001: A Space Odyssey is on that list.

Wow 3 Mel Gibson films in the top 10, maybe he should do some research on his subjects before making a film.

The Passion of the Christ didn't make the list, though, so I gotta wonder...

(Well, okay, there is a great deal to admire, but it's always a "I wish I looked like that" kind of thing.)

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
1408 - with John Cusack based on a short story by Stephen King
Cusack plays Mike Enslin, an author who reviews ghost sightings and haunted houses. He doesn't believe in the supernatural and never had any reason to change his mind, until ...
It's a great and genuinely scary and old-fashioned ghost movie with a John Cusack in top-form. Brilliant.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Thanks, Stormlight. I'd forgotten that movie even existed. Onto the Netflix queue with it ...
Still dragging behind in my movie watching, I saw Lost in Translation yesterday. 'Twas okay. I spent most of it thinking, "Don't let them have sex, don't let them have sex, don't let them have sex ..." When they didn't, I was relieved.
On the leading edge, DVD-wise, I saw Atonement last night. I enjoyed it and totally didn't see the end coming. Although I still wonder how the guy was standing around with a hole in his chest ...

Erm. Any suggestions on which version (theatrical or unrated) of 1408 I should rent ... ?

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Double-feature today:
Eastern Promises - Finally got around to watching it. I agree with the others here: Awesome movie. 9/10
Planet Terrot (directed by Robert Rodriguez) - The second part of Grindhouse and imho better than Tarantino's Death Proof. It's a good old, gory Zombie flick. Pure genius. 9/10 as well.

Dadgummit! I keep hearing how great this movie is and I can't watch it. Stupid Netflix queue backlog ...
I saw The Mist this weekend. Maybe because I've read the novella so many times, I enjoyed the parts I expected and was disappointed in the parts that were added. However, the un-King ending completely blew me away. In fact, I felt it was better than the entire rest of the movie; it was almost too good to be there.
I also saw the remake of The Wicker Man. I put it on my Netflix queue so I could subject it to the RiffTrax treatment. That turned out to be the best way to watch it; the original with Edward Woodward was much better and it hadn't been great.
