More Q1 updates:

Gillibrand raised $3 million in Q1; 92% of donations under $200. She also has a war chest of over $10 million on hand to spend on her candidacy.
Kirsten Gillibrand: Everything you need to know about the 2020 candidate
Gillibrand is a co-sponsor of Medicare for All, strong supporter of the Green New Deal, and champions issues surrounding sexual assault; currently the Senator who votes least in line with Trump.

Jay Inslee raised $2.25 million Q1; no info released on donors; Inslee is backed by a Super-PAC Act Now on Climate. His signature issue remains climate change, with some strong positions on gun control and vaccination.
Jay Inslee: Everything you need to know about the 2020 candidate

In other Inslee news:

Inslee calls on DNC to hold debate focused on climate change
From about 18 hours ago.

DNC pumps brakes on Jay Inslee's proposal for climate change debate
From about seven hours ago; guess that got resolved.

Speaking of National Democratic Apparatus: in March, the DCCC implemented their blacklisting rule- if you work for anyone challenging an incumbent Dem from the Left, you will never work for anyone connected to the DCCC's machine.
The DCCC's Strategy to Kill Primary Challenges Is Reportedly Already Working
Quote:
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a plan to prevent another Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-type incumbent challenger from ever succeeding again, and it appears to be already working.

...>snip<...

This “blacklisting” that Klein is referring to is the DCCC’s new “hiring standards” rules, which say the organization won’t contract with or recommend services of any firm that works for a candidate challenging a Democrat incumbent.

The National Journal reported the rule change on Friday, which follows the ascension of conservative Democrat Cheri Bustos to DCCC chair. The DCCC’s independent-expenditure arm pays millions in contracts to consultants and connects them to Democratic campaigns, opportunities, and resources that a firm would be cut off to if it worked with a candidate that challenged incumbents.

The rule change seems tailor-made to protect conservative incumbents in deep-blue districts, such as Texas’ Henry Cuellar (who has been frequently mentioned by the left-wing electoral group Justice Democrats as ripe for a primary challenge) and Illinois’ Dan Lipinski, an anti-choice Democrat, one of the few members left in Congress who opposed Obamacare, and someone who barely beat back a primary challenge last year from nonprofit executive Marie Newman, who was endorsed by Illinois Democratic Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Luis Gutierrez. (Newman is reportedly raising money for another run against Lipinski next year.)
Seems legit :unnod:

Gillibrand endorsed Marie Newman to unseat Lipinski. I hope the other 2020 candidates do the same.

And Cuellar gets surprisingly little attention given how awful his voting record has been. He votes like Joe Manchin in a district that voted against Trump about the same amount as NY or Illinois.

NBC has an interesting numbers-crunching summary here on how much each candidate raised, and how fast they are spending it, and how much they have left.
Six things we've learned from the 2020 candidates' fundraising reports

Bernie Sanders' Fox News Town Hall was well received, with a mixed crowd responding positively to his messaging on Medicare for All:

Even the conservative of yester-year National Review thought Sanders did well:
Bernie Sanders Shines on Fox News

Nathan J. Robinson makes a good argument as to why it is hypocritical for Sanders to retain his millions but campaign against a system that creates massive wealth inequality:
Why Bernie Sanders Should Give His Millions Away

Referring back to my earlier post, I don't think it's particularly relevant that he doesn't give tons of money to things recognized by the government as "charity". But it does seem he should be giving away more than 3% of his income. It's just that it can and probably should include non-deductible causes that help ordinary people build political power.

Hmm, some of those points really don't land. "When you have millions of dollars, you could immediately better the condition of a great number of people"... yeah nah, a couple of million doesn't really go that far. I mean, later he writes "Let’s say Bernie paid off a thousand people’s medical debt." With 2 mill? Paying off $2k off each person? I thought that people suffering onerous medical debt generaly owed much more than that.

Also, the book earnings are pretty much a one off. Anyone sensible receiving that would use the bulk of it to provide future income.

Yeah, he could make better political hay from giving more away, but I'm not really seeing significant hypocrisy.

Elizabeth Warren has become the first presidential candidate to call for impeaching Individual-1.

I'm still on the fence about whether we should actually start drafting up a formal impeachment, but I think it's probably a good thing to have presidential candidates at least talking about impeachment. Move the Overton window and all.

At this point, Warren and Harris are well above the other candidates on my list.

(BTW, the best suggestion I've heard for impeachment, from Damon Poeter on LGM, is "Send the impeachment ruling to the Senate on Oct. 28, 2020 and make James fucking Comey deliver the papers.")

ETA: here are Warren’s tweets about the subject, BTW

I mean, she’s not wrong.

...also, this:

Well, this certainly looks pretty corrupt. A lot of that money winds up going back to him as a result of publisher royalties. I can understand having some copies of books to sell at campaign events and the like - but $444K? That's a pretty ridiculous number.

Looked same day and next few days for any info on this story; all my searches found this discussed on... three blogs and two Twitter accounts. And :ff:. Doesn't mean it isn't worth following up on; may come back up as the season progresses and I'd be interested in what the campaign or Sanders has to say if anything regarding buying books in 2015.

:dem:

Senator Elizabeth Warren has been running hard and putting down substantial policy positions and pledges daily; even the media is asking itself why Warren isn't being given more attention and focus.
A Guide to Elizabeth Warren’s (Many) 2020 Policy Proposals
Do male candidates get more coverage than women? It’s complicated.

:dem:

Former Vice-President Joe Biden declared his candidacy today; he is the 20th candidate running currently. This is his third presidential run, and he has Obama's donor list.
Here's his policy positions in detail- it is worth the read.
There have been a raft of quickly resolved rumors regarding a McCain family endorsement (no) and Obama not endorsing (Biden asked him not to).
Actual endorsements here (I think the headline uses "wave" a little too gratuitously).
Quote:
Biden, a Pennsylvania native who represented Delaware in the Senate for 36 years, nabbed four endorsements from Democratic senators: Chris Coons of Delaware, Tom Carper of Delaware, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Doug Jones of Alabama. Coons won a special election to replace Biden in 2009 when he became vice president.
Also, this article discusses Biden's fundraising starting with state or corporate lobbyists- as opposed to federal lobbyists, from which almost all candidates have pledged to not accept donations. The article also says that O'Rourke, Harris, and Booker use the same loophole for fundraising. Biden additionally has GOP-focused donors:
Quote:
Daniel Hilferty, a member of the Biden host committee, is the chief executive officer of Independence Blue Cross. He is on the board of America’s Health Insurance Plans, the trade association working to defeat the progressive push for Medicare for All. In national politics, Hilftery has exclusively donated to Republicans this year, records show. The health insurance executive gave $5,000 to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., along with smaller donations to other congressional Republicans.

Biden and Sanders are too old. :oldman:

I know this is a bit rich coming from a Brit, but you should have better candidates. Sure, our UK politicians are also all crap, but the USA should aspire to be better - you should be setting a good example for the rest of the world.

Obama-tied operatives and Biden supporters launch $60 million ‘dark money’ group

Quote:
A new “dark money” group is labeling itself the strategy center for Democrats in 2020.

The recently-launched Future Majority will spend up to $60 million to target voters in swing states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio in the 2020 election, helping Democrats craft messaging that they are fighting for working people while countering conservative talking points, according to Politico.

The 501(c)(4) nonprofit, run by Democratic strategist Mark Riddle, is not required to disclose its donors. The group will reportedly “spend money through PACs,” potentially feeding a growing trend of dark money-funded super PACs spending to influence elections.

Earlier this year, Democratic fundraiser Matthew Tompkins formed a super PAC called America’s Future Majority Fund PAC. He is also listed as the custodian of records for an identically-named nonprofit run by Riddle and is listed as governor on incorporation records for Future Majority. The two long worked together at New Leaders Council (NLC), a nonprofit that helps recruit young progressive leaders.

The revolving door between the new nonprofit and NLC doesn’t end there. Incorporation records show Future Majority’s incorporator is Cathedral Strategies LLC, a limited-liability company with a paper trail linked to Brett Avery Seifried, who was general counsel of NLC.

With Tompkins, links between Future Majority and presidential contender Joe Biden begin to emerge. The Hill reported that Tompkins recently launched a pro-Biden super PAC, titled For the People PAC, with the aim of raising tens of millions of dollars to support Biden’s campaign.
A super PAC aimed at supporting Joe Biden.

Quote:
Biden’s campaign has said it doesn’t welcome support from super PACs, following a similar stance to most 2020 Democrats. Whether these public disavowals make an impact remains to be seen, as super PACs are not allowed to coordinate with candidates and may independently spend to support or oppose any candidate — with or without their permission.
Cool! I guess that covers it. As long as they say they don't want dark money support but still get it.

Quote:
Riddle told Politico he is worried about 2020 Democrats being labeled as socialists — an increasingly common Republican talking point entering 2020. On its about us page, Future Majority, urges Democrats to use the terminology “Smart Capitalism” when describing economic plans. The group also subtly pushes back on Medicare-for-All, calling for Democrats to improve healthcare by “strengthening the Affordable Care Act and protecting Medicare and Social Security.
I guess the part about "craft messaging that they are fighting for working people" makes more sense now- propaganda and the status quo. I like how Mark Riddle wants to pre-empt Republican talking points- by making sure the Democrats are more palatable to Republicans- because now they are sure not to paint Democrats as socialists, right? Keep dancing to that tune, they are sure to reward you...

With Bennet announced, and De Blasio (apparently) about to announce a presidential campaign next week, we're almost maxed out on white male Democrats with no particular reason to run for president or hope of winning (Delaney, Hickenlooper, Ryan, Gravel, Swalwell, Moulton, Bennet). Only one left who has indicated a strong likelihood of running is Montana governor Steve Bullock, who is expected to announce about a week later.

(Then the only major candidate left to decide is Stacey Abrams.)

Of course, that's not all of the white men either, since there's still Biden, Sanders, Buttigieg, O'Rourke, and Inslee. Inslee has a good argument for why he's running, and the rest aren't in the no-hope contingent.

So, of the likely 24 major candidates (counting Wayne Messam and Marianne Williamson, because why not), we'll have:

23 straight candidates (96%)
20-21 at least nominally* Christian candidates (83-88%)
18 white candidates (75%)
18 male candidates (75%)
15 white male candidates (63%)
14 straight white male candidates (58%)
11-12 nominally Christian straight white male candidates (46-50%)

But white males are only about 31% of the country, and an even lower percentage of Democrats.

Meanwhile, the white male candidates are combining for about 2/3 of the vote in national primary polls.

Yet we'll probably continue to see pieces wondering whether being a white male is a disadvantage in the Democratic primary... :chin:

*I'm not speculating about their true beliefs. Gravel is a Unitarian Universalist which is at least a little Christian-y but can also be considered distinct. Bennet is half-Jewish, half-Catholic but doesn't say anything beyond that he believes in God. Only Sanders (Jewish but seemingly non-observant) has no Christian background and Gabbard (Hindu) is the only one who practices a non-Christian religion. Kamala Harris's mother is Hindu, but she identifies as Baptist.

Mazie Hirono Dickpunches Bill Barr In The Teeth, Doesn't Even Say 'Aloha' - Wonkette

Quote:
And then OH DAMN, Hirono was the first senator to say what we've been saying all day, and she said it to his face:
You lied to Congress. You told Rep. Charlie Crist that you didn't know what objections Mueller's team might have to your March 24 so-called "summary." You told Senator Chris Van Hollen that you didn't know if Bob Mueller supported your conclusions. But you knew. You lied. And now WE KNOW.

And she's right. Bill Barr did lie to Congress.
Hirono said she wasn't surprised by any of this, and this is why she voted against him.
She finished her monologue by saying Barr had betrayed Americans' trust, and should therefore RESIGN. (Kamala Harris also said in no uncertain terms after the hearing that Barr should GTFO and resign.)
I am the so large fan of Mazie! Harris Mazie in 2020, or Mazie Harris, whichever.

2016 I was stoked to vote for a woman, if for no other reason than it's about time, isn't it? I wasn't that stoked it was Hillary. This time'll be different though, because at least I'll be stoked for the candidates, and if they don't win, at least I will have been happy to push the button for them.

I think the minority and women's votes will be key. I'm guessing independent women might be more easily swayed to vote D then Indy men will be swayed to vote R. From what I can ferret out, women and minorities may well turn out in good numbers.

I understand the concerns about Harris, but I think she has the steel to go toe to toe with that ridiculous bully we have now, and she can appeal to some crucial segments of the party.

btw the rest of the article is pretty entertaining in typical wonkette fashion

Unfortunately, Hirono was born in Japan and has stage four cancer (her prognosis doesn't seem to be completely hopeless, but it'd be enough to curtail any chances of her running for president even without the Constitutional issue). If not for those two factors, she'd be pretty high on my list of potential nominees as well. Still glad to see that speech getting more exposure, though; I've been quite impressed with her for awhile.

I have to recalibrate on Warren. I was thinking she would do poorly among minorities. I heard (don't ask me where, probably something on MSNBC) that some polling indicated a fairly good minority reaction, but then I saw some list of Trump v Various Candidates, and Warren was the only one losing to Trump. Both of those information points stand my (mis)perception on its head.

I'm not really that interested in general election polls before we've even had one debate, much less even one primary contest. Polls this far out aren't that predictive. People aren't paying that much attention and haven't really heard most candidates' messages.

My impression is that Warren tends to be liked when people actually listen to her (at campaign events, perhaps also at debates), so maybe she'll improve over time...

Perspective: polling in the Democratic Primary around this time in May of 2015,
Clinton 60% range
Sanders 15%
Biden around 8%
Webb 1-2%
O'Malley, Chafee, and Lessig 1% or less
A Fox poll around this time also asked about Warren (13%) and Cuomo (2%).

The Iowa Caucus is Feb 3, 2020.
A lot can happen between now and then!
The news gets caught in reactionary takes and horse races.
