Rosetta comet mission
Already interesting, but should get more so over the next few months as the comet nears the sun and the lander touches down. So here's a thread to discuss it.
Here's a size comparison of the comet with Los Angeles.

Re: Rosetta comet mission
The landing site for the lander, named Philae, has been chosen: it's on the 'head' part of the comet.
The lander will be 'dropped' from Rosetta from about 10km (6 miles) high - it will then free-fall to the comet's surface. The gravity of the comet is very weak, so even after the lander has fallen through that distance it will still only be going at about walking pace when it impacts. Philae is equipped with screws and harpoons in its landing feet, which will hopefully prevent it from bouncing back up or toppling over.
The landing is scheduled for November 11th.
In other news, Philae's camera was fired up recently for tests and used to take this 'selfie'. The camera has much lower resolution than the main cameras on Rosetta itself, but it's still an interesting shot showing parts of the Rosetta spacecraft with the comet in the background.

Re: Rosetta comet mission
Rosetta's probe may land 500 metres from jets that produce comet's tail | Science | theguardian.com
THE JETS THAT PRODUCE THE COMET'S TAIL, PEOPLE!!!
Quote:
Intriguingly, site J has two “pits”, which look like the origin of jets of gas and dust ejected by the comet to form its tail. Holger Sierks of the Max Planck Institute for the Solar System, Göttingen, estimates that if all goes well, Philae could be just 500-600 metres away from these pits and so have a ringside seat as the jets get stronger the closer the comet gets to the sun in the coming months.

Re: Rosetta comet mission
They changed it from the originally planned
probably just to spite us.
Read
the blog of the lead scientist of the Philae lander . The September 22nd entry about testing the harpoons was an interesting read, and today's entry gives loads of background information about the comet.

Re: Rosetta comet mission
Yeah - they could have edited out a lot of dross before uploading to YouTube - they just copied the whole thing that was streamed live...
But there was some good information in there if you could put up with, or fast-forward, through the boring bits.
They mentioned that there is a live stream tomorrow covering the landing attempt. I may try to watch that...

Nice animation showing what the lander is supposed to do if all goes well.

Re: Rosetta comet mission
1 hour till separation, 8 hours till touch down.
Philae is a go.
Hopefully it doesn't bounce.
ESA During checks on the lander’s health, it was discovered that the active descent system, which provides a thrust to avoid rebound at the moment of touchdown, cannot be activated.
At touchdown, landing gear will absorb the forces of the landing while ice screws in each of the probe’s feet and a harpoon system will lock Philae to the surface. At the same time, a the thruster on top of the lander is supposed to push it down to counteract the impulse of the harpoon imparted in the opposite direction.
“The cold gas thruster on top of the lander does not appear to be working so we will have to rely fully on the harpoons at touchdown,”says Stephan Ulamec, Philae Lander Manager at the DLR German Aerospace Center.
“We’ll need some luck not to land on a boulder or a steep slope.”

Re: Rosetta comet mission
People talking. And people not talking. Is there a graphic of where the Philae lander is at the moment? Or at least a km to go ticker. I can only find
Where is Rosetta? which show Rosetta and 67P and the solar system, but no zoom in ...
