Our congressman, Jared Polis, gave up his safe seat in the U.S. House of Representatives to run for governor of lolorado. He recently won the Democratic primary by a wide margin (despite the fact that Mr. Pee and I voted for someone else), and will face Bush family member Walker Stapleton (otherwise known as Rutherford P. Higginbotham III) in the general election.

The fact that Polis was our second choice is, for me, largely offset by the fact that today he selected our former state rep, Dianne Primavera, as his running mate. In this here thread you'll find multiple examples of me fanboying for Dianne, my all-time favorite state legislator.

In all likelihood, our new congressman will be Joe Neguse, who would be the first African-American ever elected to a federal office from lolorado.

Oh hey, Colorado.

The other day I had some tea with dinner from this place in Boulder. While I found the flavour a bit acidic, the scent was one of the best I've ever had.

Filed under For What It's Worth.

eta: No I was not in Colorado.

The GOP is the party of personal responsibility, but only where "personal responsibility" is defined in a way that specifically excludes supporting one's own spawn.

Late last year, the Republican representative for state House District 47 took a jerb with the Trump Administration, and a GOP vacancy committee appointed this racist pig to serve out the remainder of the term. The racist pig decided to run for a full term, but her tenure ended when she got whupped in the Republican HD47 primary.

The winner of the GOP primary, and favorite to win the seat come November, is a lovely fellow by the name of Don Bendell. It recently came to light that ol' Don was a deadbeat dad of epic proportions. Bendell's response to this story is basically, "Fuck you. I paid every penny of that child support. And besides, my ex was a big giant bitch."

Well, it turns out that Don and his family were living in North Carolina when he and his wife got divorced. When a North Carolina court entered a judgment requiring Don to pay support for his three minor children, ol' Don bailed to Ohio and later to Colorado. (The NC courts were biased, ya see.) He never paid any support until 1997, when interstate child support enforcement procedures enacted at the federal level during the Clinton administration enabled the ex-wife to obtain a judgment for unpaid child support here in Colorado. Ol' Don eventually paid the amounts due with interest (the article says he "recently" finished paying) but didn't even start paying until after all his children had reached the age of majority.

And then there's Rep. Tim Leonard, the wingnut Republican incumbent who represents Colorado HD25. Timmy recently dropped his reelection bid after a judge denied his motion to reduce his child support obligations. State reps make $30K a year, which isn't enough to live on, so folks generally continue working a regular job while serving as legislators. Not Timmy, though. His demand for child support payment reduction was based on the fact that his legislator paycheck was his only income, and is substantially less than what he was making as commercial real estate manager before he got elected. The judge basically said, "Fuck you. Voluntary underemployment isn't a basis for a reduction in your child support obligations."

So then, not exactly a "blue wave," but I'll take it. As expected, the GOP increased its advantage in the U.S. Senate, which is horrific news for the development of constitutional law. However, the Dems retook the U.S. House of Reps, which should slow down the horror show at the national level.

Here in lolorado, shit went quite well indeed:

- Democrat Jared Polis is the new governor. He'll take over for term-limited Democrat John Hickenlooper. Our former state rep Dianne Primavera, who's been referenced favorably multiple times in this here thread, is the new Lieutenant Gov.

For the first time since I've been here, all the big down-ballot statewide races went Democrat.

- The biggest and best surprise was Jena Griswold beating incumbent Republican Secretary of State Wayne Williams.

- Phil Weiser narrowly beat Republican George Brauchler for attorney general. Weiser will take over for incumbent Republican Cynthia Coffman, who gave up the AG job to run a gubernatorial campaign that ended spectacularly in self-immolation at the state GOP convention.

- Dave Young will be the new state treasurer after defeating an absolute scumbag named Brian Watson. Young takes over incumbent Republican Walker Stapleton, who got the GOP nomination for governor but lost to Polis.

- Joe Neguse takes over from Polis as the U.S. Rep for our congressional district. Joe, the son of Eritrean refugees, becomes the first African-American elected to federal office from Colorado.

- There were no U.S. Senate seats up for grabs here, but the House delegation flipped from 4-3 GOP to 4-3 Dem.

- Democrats increased their majority in the state house of representatives and recaptured control of the state senate.

- Matt Gray, our current state rep and a worthy successor to the above-mentioned Dianne Primavera, won reelection with ease.

- We amended out state constitution to eliminate the prison labor exception to the prohibition against slavery and involuntary servitude. Big business will still be able to get tons of corporate welfare by having their products manufactured by prisoners, but not here. :nope:

- We amended the state constitution to take control of state and federal redistricting away from the state legislature.

- On the downside, there was a ballot initiative that would have required all new oil and gas wells to be located at least 2,500 feet from residences, schools, etc. It lost thanks to the millions upon millions of dollars the O&G industry spent to convince voters that the state will devolve into a stone age shithole if the initiative passed.

That the exception existed in the first place horrifies me, and I didn't know it was still possible to horrify my jaded self, so there's that.

Congrats on eliminating it. In 2018. :woopdedo:

Yep. The exception derives from the 13th Amendment and is p. goddamn pervasive in state constitutions. For instance:
Slavery is prohibited. Involuntary servitude is prohibited except to punish crime. (Emphasis added.)
California Constitution, Art. I, Sec. 6.

Democrat Bri Buentello defeated "Deadbeat Don" Bendell in the heavily GOP state house district 47. The margin of victory was a mere 54 votes out of over 30,000 votes cast, so the recount is on.

I've really come to hate Martin Luther King Jr. Day over the years. We're probably all numb to the "MLK was a Second Amendment hero" and "MLK's fondest wish was that mentally mediocre white kids have the right to attend the college of their choice" nonsense by now, but it never really ends there. Yesterday we were treated to the goddamn Vice President of the U.S. telling us that wanting to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border makes Trump exactly like MLK.

And on Friday, Colorado Rep. Lori [in]Saine (R-of course) stood before the Colorado House of Representatives and told us how far we've come since Reconstruction, "when whites and blacks alike were in nearly equal numbers lynched for the crime of being Republican."

The National Popular Vote law is legislation under which all of a state's electoral votes go to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in the 50 states and District of Columbia. The law is written so that it doesn't take effect anywhere unless and until it becomes law in states whose electoral votes total an electoral college majority.

So far, the law's gotten enacted in 11 states and DC having a total of 172 electoral votes. That's 98 short of the current electoral college majority of 270.

But we're about to get 9 electoral votes closer thanks to lolorado. Senate Bill 19-42, the NPV law, passed the state senate today by a vote of 19-16. It's expected to pass the state house of representatives as well, and the governor has already said he'll sign it.

Yeah, I know. The odds of getting enough states in on this are mighty goddamn slim. Even then, there'd be a giant brouhaha over whether the law is an interstate compact that needs the approval of Congress. For now, though, it feels good watching my adopted state's elected representatives getting on board.

I seem to remember reading that it was Confederate Sympathizers who were more likely to get lynched in Colorado. My ex Father-in-Law was a Republican, and so were most of his KKK buddies.

They were just as likely to lynch a Messican as a negro, regardless of what party they belonged to.

Out on the Plains, or over on the Western Slope, these days, it's the Dems who seem to be the rarity.
Last time I was at the Walmart in Delta, I saw more MAGA hats that CO-OP gimme Caps.

The state legislature is considering a bill regarding the teaching of sex education in public schools. For present purposes, the bill's contents are unimportant.

What IS important? The lulz, of course.

The House Health and Insurance Committee held hearings last week. Legislative hearings are a joke everywhere, but especially here. A few years back some committee chair allowed an anti-vaxx blogger to testify at a committee hearing anonymously, using only the nom de plume by which the anti-vaxxers know her.

During Friday's hearing, Joan Poston, a failed GOP candidate for a state house of representatives seat, testified as follows:

The good parts, plus an exchange with committee chairperson Rep. Janet Buckner:

Quote:
Joan Poston: Hello, my name is Joan Poston. I represent myself. I am a, um, scientist and I was a healthcare professional for 20 years with um, the city of Denver. I am, um, now retired. I um, when I saw this bill and I looked to see exactly what they were talking about when they said something was comprehensive and I said, I don’t know like I guess I’m going to have to go check my notes that I had when I went and had, um, training and when I worked at Eastside Health Center about um, sexually transmitted diseases, so I’m about to give you a couple of definitions.

Fisting. Fisting is when you take your fist and you shove it up somebody’s anus up to your wrist. But if you have somebody who is ... you can go up to your elbow. This is not a healthy …

Rep. Janet Buckner: Um, Ma’am?

JP: Yes?

JB: I can’t quite figure out where this is going…

JP: This is not a healthy relationship. This is actually…

JB: Is this to the bill?

JP: Yes, because you are wanting comprehensive fact-based…

JB: Experiential…

JP: Experiential. Yes. Um, I’ve got another one on rimming and I’ve got another one on golden showers, but I can actually move on to another topic if you’d like me to.
It is my fondest hope that Joan Poston, Healthcare Scientist becomes a regular feature at hearings before the Colorado legislature.

I don't even remember where I heard about this. Maybe it was even someone here.

But as a kid, someone was pretty worried about an upcoming sex ed class because they thought they were going to have to pair up with a classmate and have sex with them while the teacher directed and graded their performance.

What I'm saying is that maybe we need some clarification on what 'experiential' means in this context.

It is my fondest hope that Joan Poston, Healthcare Scientist becomes a regular feature at hearings before the Colorado legislature.
She is such a hoot.

There are efforts afoot to recall the governor based on his signing the national popular vote bill into law and supporting a milquetoast oil and gas regulation bill. Leadership of the organizations spearheading the efforts includes a dude who thinks American needs a Hitler of its very own and a woman who's pretty sure radical Islam was manufactured to generate fear and thereby garner support for the "Jew World Order."
