I've exhausted all options and have no idea how to get my kid to just stop fucking wetting herself. It's not physiological, it's strictly behavioral. She just holds it in because she doesn't want to stop doing whatever it is she's doing.

Letting her work it out by herself didn't work. Punishing her doesn't work. Reasoning with her doesn't work. Ignoring it didn't work.

Not a rant per se, but a little at HP/EDS and the company I work for. I don't think anyone responsible for the decision to outsource IT had any idea of the volume and complexity of calls we deal with.

One of the supervisors just ran a report at the request of her HP counter part looking for the number of calls since the first of the year. The magic number? Over 55,000 calls. That calls on new issues only, not calls from users with existing tickets looking for updates or trying to get back in touch with us.

Over 55,000 calls; that is almost 8,000 a month, nearly 2,000 a week and an average of 263.15 calls per day. All initially fielded by just 11 people (though there are 25 total in the two departments that make up the service desk).



That does not even cover the November open enrollment, during which EVERYONE in the company must log into a special website and make their selections for health insurance. Don't login? No insurance for you in the coming year. That's right you have to re-enroll even if you don't plan on making any changes to your coverage. There is no auto re-enrollment. Everyone in the company has just the 30 days in November to complete the enrollment. Last year we had 11,000 calls in November for enrollment ON TOP of the regular calls.

We now have 5 HP India personnel in our group and they are taking some calls while being trained. Already we are having users who are hanging up or refusing to talk to the HP people. While they have identifiable Indian accents they all do speak good english. The HP people though are in no way going to be ready to actually take over full support (at least as far as the service desk is concerned) on September 13th. Despite their lack of readiness we keep being assured that this is a carved in stone cut off date, there is no way we will be employed beyond that date. I'm ing inside. The transition is going to be a spectacular cluster fuck for several months past the cut over date.

When our IT department was outsourced, the volume of calls to the help desk dropped dramatically, probably 20-25%, mostly out of frustration. People just gave up rather than dealing with people they couldn't understand, they made do or found their own solutions. Due to several years of complaints about this, now the only time you get the foreign help desk personnel is after hours. Since I spend 2/3rds of my time working "after hours", guess who I'm talking to most of the time? People, that's who.

Well, the job announcements are out. The process of job-begging at Kafka Inc. is even stupider than I expected -- and I expected plenty of stupid. The 12 available positions within my department are listed separately. The team leads in charge of hiring don't even know yet whether we can apply for one and be considered for all, or if we have to burn all 5 of our options applying for 5 separate jobs with identical descriptions. They have to consult with the new manager, who hasn't even been here for 3 fucking weeks.

Meanwhile, stuff outside my department is extremely slim pickings. There's very little that matches my skill set. Two jobs in sheepfucking Kentucky, and one in unspecified "various locations" that I can't even pin down yet -- which might be in Latin America someplace.

I figured there might at least be something back in the California office that I could fall back on as a worst-case scenario (while I'd love to move back, I can't really afford it and would have to live separately from my family). But there's nothing. Essentially, if I don't win one of the jobs in my current department, I'm done here.

I think an actual Kafka setting would be an improvement over this. Turning into a cockroach would probably be a positive career move.
