“Among the world’s 23 wealthiest countries, 80 percent of all gun deaths are American deaths and 87 percent of all kids killed by guns are American kids.” This is 42.7 times greater than the rate for all the other nations combined.
So you are compairing 'gun deaths' in America with 'gun deaths' in other countries where guns are not avalable?
Actually, I'm quoting an article that sort-of does that -- among other things. In fact guns are available, strictly speaking, in every country on the planet. They are just not legally available or easily available in some of them. The figures in question suggest -- among other things -- an effect of easy and legal availability on gun deaths.
The Asshole Right knows nothing better than deflection and fake outrage. The depressing thing is to see a cowardly university administration buying into the fakery.
We are tied with Yemen, and have a higher murder rate than Somalia
Just a quick look would suggest that some countries with the lowest avalability of guns have the highest murder rate. Suggesting that guns are not the problem?
Which countries are you referring to so we can analyze?
The US and Yemen are #1 and #2 in private citizen gun ownership, and tied in murder rate. I don't think anybody is saying guns are the only problem...and if they are that's a problem in itself. Obviously poverty and instability are a factor in murder rates (hence Africa, S. America, etc are the highest rates).
The US is a first world country and has a murder rate well above all other first world countries, and is number 1 in gun ownership. Correlation is there.

If you look at the gun ownership map compaired to the overall homicide rate you will see that Russia, Brazil, and much of central Africa is low on guns but high on murder. This in not a detailed analysis but just a quick look.
For the US the overall murder rate is low and the firearms rate is low as well, according to the maps you provided the links to.

This map would seem to indicate that Russia, Brazil, and much of Africa are on the high end of the scale for Homicides.
Weird - because the Favelas in Brazil alone are renowned for being absolutely chock full of guns, including heavy weaponry such as light machine guns and RPG's. Police won't go in unless in armored vehicles or in special forced-style helicopter raids, though I hear lately they are trying some new methods that include clearing an area with heavily armed squads and then flooding the area with locally trained police.
Be that as it may, I find it hard to image anyone considering Brazil a country where gun ownership is uncommon.
Perhaps we are talking about *registered* guns only?

I did not provide the links to the maps. Talk to LadyShea. I just read the information on the maps.
