Watched Identity last night. I kinda felt baited and switched, but it was entertaining.

Identity! That was it! The main thing I remember about that movie is that I had a cool Mafia game designed based on it, then I fucked up and CC'd all the townies on their role PM instead of BCC'ing them.

Oh, also, saw Alice in Wonderland over the weekend. Meh. Burton being Burton for Burton's sake.

Is that the one where they're in the hotel and they figure out they all have the same birthday?

Yeah, I'm not remotely interested in Alice in Wonderland. All that supergoofiness just looks exhausting to me. Also, any movie that makes Johnny Depp look so unhot really does not need my support.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Yeah, Depp looks like absolute ass in that makeup and stupid grin, yet the pic of him is the main marketing image for the film. Way to go.
When Burton's on, he's really on. But it seems like most of the time he picks shit like this.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Depp's goofy makeup was actually the least bad thing about the movie.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Well, I am a negative person who is very critical of movies, and your coworker probably isn't.
The visuals were interesting, for the most part...I actually enjoyed them.
The characters were flat as fuck, though, the framing sequence is a lot of eye-rollery along the lines of "Should I marry this epic scale douchtool or invent the concept of trading with China, which has never previously occurred to any English person?", and the main story is just Alice rehearsing every well known scene from the source material as she decides whether or not she should fucking do the thing that the scroll of telling the future clearly shows her doing, with a half-assed, go-nowhere, bit of characterization for the Hatter grafted on to justify having Depp in the movie.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
I haven't really liked a Burton film since Sleepy Hollow and that was what, ten or eleven years ago? Corpse Bride was ok, but not great. Going to skip Alice, despite (or because of) loving the source material.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Sleepy Hollow rawked. Ed Wood is not only my favorite Burton flick, it's one of my favorite films period. So it just kinda pisses me off when I see Burton making crap, because I know what he's capable of. But I suppose that's as pointless as railing at George Lucas for OMG U ROONED MAI CHILDHOOD. I recognize that, but I still want to slap him sometimes.

And it was annoying when his smug ass went on the Daily Show, and John said that his son likes the first episode the best, and that this disappointed John, Lucas said something of to the effect that it's valid to like the prequels better and gave the impression that he didn't think there was anything wrong with them (or at least, not compared to the originals).

Maybe he truly doesn't see any faults in them, which just goes to show how senile he has become.
The man wrote the shit-pile that is Indiana Jones 4. You can't tell me he's not losing his mind.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
I recently watched a movie on one of the 'premium channels' (HBO or whatever). It was called 'But I'm a Cheerleader'. It was surprisingly good. It appeared to be an older movie and certainly did not have high production values. It actually had a rather campy, low budget feel to it, but the humor in it was just priceless.
It's a story about a cheerleader in a religious/conservative family who is a lesbian, but doesn't realize it. Her friends/family realize it so they stage an 'intervention' and then send her off to a camp to 'get straight'.
What follows is filled with stereotypes that outright mock darn near any point of view, but in the end it's actually quite touching. It doesn't appear to take itself too seriously but still managed to be thought provoking.

The camp and overall tone was purposeful, I believe, somewhat mimicking John Waters. I enjoyed it too.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
I dug that movie. Also, it had Clea DuVall in it, who would later bring the hotness on season one of Heroes.

Re: Seen Any Good Movies...?
Went and saw Alice.
I will be one of the few people who disagree with the lot of you. I liked it. I like Burton movies and look forward to seeing his aesthetic in other movies. He's certainly not God, but then again he's not George Lucas or M night either.
I went expecting Alice and got exactly what I was expecting. The story moved along well enough and I was happy they didn't have many "Hey remember this character?" pointless cameos.
I saw it in 3D which was interesting and ocassional small glitches in the 3D gave it a more wonderland feeling. I'm glad most 3D movies have gotten over the gimmick and aren't shoving random things into your face cause "OMG teh 3Dzors."
I think this was as good as live action Alice could get and now it's time to put the story to rest for awhile before Jim Carey voices Alice in a creepy 3d animated version.

I saw it today too and enjoyed it. It could have been better without all the outside of wonderland stuff tacked on. But it was cool.
