We lack an appropriate age distinction.

Spanish:
Niña
Chica
Joven
Mujer

Swedish:
Flicka
Tjej
Kvinna

English has girl and woman.

Interesting. So "girl" and "woman" are basically interchangeable? You can call a 60 year old girl?

How about boy and man? If instead of Emily Blunt it was Michael Fassbender (or whoever) would the title "The boy on the train" be ok?

It all just sounds wrong to me.

"The boy on the train" would imply he was either young (early 20s or younger) or he was seen as a romantic prospect by another person who was of a similar or older age, but that comes with certain connotations and doesn't work in all contexts (if you were out at the bar, you could say something like "See any boys you like?" even if the people involved were middle aged).

"Guy" can be used for boys (children), but I think it's mostly teenagers and adults. It works pretty well at covering that in-between period. There isn't really an equivalent for women, which would be useful.

There are, of course, other words for women that can be used for Emily Blunt's age range, but they are either suffer similar problems as girl ("gal") or are considerably worse ("chick", "bird", etc.) or are otherwise not really appropriate in meaning ("lady").

Beauty and the Beast. Not much new to it. Emma Watson was good, and yet another English accent set in France. Lumiere stole the show as he did in the animated feature. The beast got a strong singing solo. The sets were fabulous.

So if you're inclined to such a movie, or just love great sets, worthwhile.

I used to have a policy where, if some man referred to me or other women as girls, I'd work in some way to call him a boy and see how he liked it. Some of them really, really didn't like that.

(I guess it's still my policy, but I have personally aged out of the nebulous 'girl' category, so it doesn't happen anymore.)

Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about 'girls of the diocese' - but at that time, 'girl' meant any young person - what today we might call 'youngsters'. Then, in the early fifteenth century, 'girl' began to apply only to females, and the new word, 'boy' had to be invented for male children. 'Boy' is thought to have come from a French word meaning 'slave' or 'peasant'.

Maybe there is another shift in usage occurring now, where the upper age limit for a 'girl' is gradually increasing.

Ghost in the Shell staring ScarJo.

It's related to but not the same as the anime on which it was based. There are similar story beats and scenes, but they have a different context. I didn't find it as thoughtful or engaging as the anime. It's a very Hollywood production through and through. The most positive thing I can say about it is that ScarJo is p good. And the lampshade, as such, they use to explain the whitewashing was okay.

Office Christmas Party :meh:

It's an utterly predictable and forgettable Hollywood comedy saved only by a very good performance from Jennifer Aniston.

I enjoyed it.

I wasn't a super fan of the anime so I didn't really have a problem with ScarJo playing the Major. I know the anime take place in a future Tokyo, but to me Major Kusanagi in the anime never really looked Japanese anyway.

As an amalgam of several different Ghost in the Shell anime I thought the movie flowed well.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was ... okay, in my opinion.

My overwhelming feeling upon watching it was, "Eh, we've seen all of this before." It didn't help that all the really best bits were in the trailers.

And oh look, they're fighting another super-powerful villain who wants to destroy the Universe in a fight that none of them should survive, because the villain could annihilate all of them in an instant. With a thought. But, for some reason, he's too incompetent to actually get around to doing so.

Oh, and have I mentioned that I hate contrived coincidences? "Oh look, they have a whole planet to wander around on, yet -- somehow -- Gamora and Nebula managed to just happen upon the one place* on the whole frikkin' planet that's soooper relevant to the plot. What an amazing coincidence!"

Still, there's lots of action, lots of explosions, and lots of pretty colors. If you kind of shut your brain off and try not to think about whether any of this makes any sense, it's enjoyable enough.

*Maybe there were other such sites. Even so, it's a ridiculously contrived coincidence.

Alien: Covenant wasn't quite the flaming insult to the audience's intelligence that Prometheus was, but that's faint praise indeed.

That having been said, could we please stop making movies in which the entire plot hinges around a bunch of supposedly highly-trained and intelligent people behaving like complete idiots?

'Cause, you know, that'd be great.

Passengers

Fuck that movie. Seriously. This should have been so great, but no. Are we going to explore why Chris Pratt did what he did and what the consequences are? Nope. Let's just make a shitty love story out of it that incidentally happens to play out on a spaceship. And let's not forget to add some typical SciFi action shit and an idiotic happy ending to appease the deplorable!

Bloody infuriating especially after the first 40 minutes or so were actually pretty good (and the only thing keeping this out of the shitty movie thread). The acting of Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence was ok.

Also lol at the "science". Jesus Christ!

The Lego Batman Movie

After seeing the rave reviews this got pretty much everywhere I thought I'd give it a go. :meh: I don't know. Maybe it really is me. Maybe I'm too old for these movies but I was as underwhelmed with this as I was with Deadpool. It has its funny moments though and on the whole it really is not bad if a little too long.

I completely disagree with you. I think Prometheus is the slightly better film out of the two. I can't recall the last time I felt personally insulted by a film's lack of intelligence. I mean, at least in Prometheus they had freaking helmets (that they didn't use).

For me, the insults started almost immediately. It's like they watched Passengers and wondered how they could make the story worse. Even if we pretend that Covenant is a sort of direct bridge between Prometheus and Alien we have a ship full of idiots who shouldn't have been responsible for driving an ice cream truck let alone a colony-slash-exploration vessel full of people.

At least in Alien the ship was full of rock-breaking or gas-collecting miners who were getting well paid to baby sit a ship. We could tell those people lived in a world with a greedy corporation pushing the buttons and pulling the levers. You know, because they were talking about how much money they were making - or losing - and their resentment of the corporation.

I still have little clue as to who was what in Covenant. Except that, you know, they're idiots.

I have to agree that the people in Covenant were even more insultingly-stupid than were those in Prometheus. And that's saying something.

I would argue that Prometheus was an even stupider movie overall though, not because of the characters, but because of the plot. At least the characters in Covenant had a more or less viable reason for being where they were. The characters in Prometheus can't say that. I mean the whole thing about the main character in Prometheus being convinced that humans were engineered on essentially no evidence whatsoever, that they funded a multi-trillion dollar space expedition based on this flimsiest of notions, and that they somehow managed to navigate to a planet light-years away from Earth because of some crude cave paintings? What were the writers smoking? Such an insult to biology, astronomy, and basic logic.

Wonder Woman, some cringy storyboarding decisions, the sunrise denoting the villain defeated, and Bechdel Powers Activate, not bad.

Denial - about the David Irving Deborah Lipstadt trial.

Really great performances in a mediocre movie. It's a pretty good overview of the trial itself, gets the history correct, and really expresses the slippery deception of Holocaust denial.

The really frustrating thing about the movie is the plot: Lipstadt needs to learn to shut up and let the legal process work. The dramatic tension in the movie is how Lipstadt would defend the charges and how English law required the trial to be conducted. It doesn't make for compelling drama, especially since the same scene repeats itself more than once: Lipstadt sees a negative turn in the trial, wants to testify, and then the lawyers have to explain to her why she shouldn't. Too much repetition of that drags the movie down.

Rough Night - Scarlett Johansson and some others, lame, obvious gags. Painful for the first half, a few laughs in the second. Overall not very well done at all.
