The [Thanks] is for the 95. That's some awesome work ES.

What's the GRE?

The GRE is a standardized test to get into graduate school. The general test that I'm taking in August is half math, half English (like our SAT that high school kids take to get into college) and then I'm taking a "subject test" in computer science in November. That's the one that really matters, but I still need to get a high score on the general test or risk EXTREME FACE LOSS! :ohnoes:

Srsly, though, I was really really surprised about the 95. I made an error in the first problem that cascaded through the whole test so I knew I got the whole thing wrong. But I "only" lost one point on each question for the error and there were five questions so voila! 95!

I dropped my fall classes today. I was telling some coworkers about the overwhelming shit tons of work I have to do over the next six weeks and finished with "and on top of that I start taking classes four nights a week on 8/22", when I came to the sudden realization that I didn't actually have to do that. I'm disappointed but very relieved.

My classes start next week and I have totally fucking revamped my schedule. I chose my classes exclusively based on (1) how little work I can do and (2) how little time I can spend in class. I have class two days a week. I dropped Criminal Procedure because the professor was like "no laptops in class!" and I am all "fuck you then." So I replaced it with Secured Transactions, which may be kind of shoot-me-in-the-face awful but what the fuck, at least I can read :ff: while I'm doing it. Then I dropped Election Law and replaced it with some silly Practice Skills or summat class, which only meets one day per week and has no final exam. Then the law school cancelled Land Use (after I bought the non-returnable book - THANKS GUYS) so I added Bankruptcy which was the only thing I could add that would not disrupt my 2 day per week schedule, but it should go along with Secured Transactions ok. Then also Worker's Comp, which I could drop if I wanted to, but wtf it's only 2 hours once a week and no book.

ALSO today I filed babby's first responsive pleading! A response to defendant's motion to dismiss in federal district court. Well, not "I" - I just wrote the goddamn thing - and probably not "today," since actual lawyer man has to do the filing. But still, it's my pleading, dammit. A good thing too, because the complaint that somebody else wrote was soooo poorly drafted. :baby:

New semester starts tomorrow, though I have no classes at all on Mondays, so I don't technically start until Tuesday. I've got a double-shot of math which should catch me most of the way up to where I should be, provided I don't fuck anything up this term...

:cheer: Congrats fragment on your scientistic bachelority!

Minor update: babby won his legal victory this week! This one was in state court, just opposing a motion to reconsider. It was not exactly a glorious triumph or anything because basically it just required actually reading the Rules of Civil Procedure, and also not being crazy. But I think that gets you a long way. :baby:

biochem 3100, biology 1108 and two 4000 level religion classes (confucianism and history of early christian theology)

thus far the theology class is making my ear holes bleed. We discussed a test case, the professor uses a very discussion/socratic/bullshit method, about whether women should be ordained as priests or pastors.

One student was all like three times the holy spirit has called to me and spoken my name and told me to be a pastor.

srsly

The readings are interesting at least, we just read The Gospel of Thomas, if you only read one gnostic gospel make it the gospel of thomas.

If any of you have a moment, this is a short survey done by Michelle Pacansky-Brock as research on emerging technologies in the classroom. She could use your input.

If there is even the slightest chance you will ever work in Asia, pay attention to the Confucian part. He's still alive and walking around over there.

It's my favorite time of the semester! Classes are in full swing, midterms are still a week or two away, and the children that don't actually want to be here have stopped coming. My classes are small, intimate, and engaging, and I have tons of space and room and quiet (my favorite things!) anywhere I go on campus to study or relax.

I had a midterm exam yesterday and three today. :gah: Yesterday's was a cakewalk, but today I had two brutal CS exams, and sandwiched in between them was a sign language test wherein I signed with a partner on video for 10 minutes with no prompt or preparation, just all extemporaneous.

My brain is hurty.

Also, from what I hear, there's an even greater tendency for people who learn it at an older age (like 6 or older) to have problems with grammar and "accent" so to speak than for spoken languages (at least, that is, if your first language is not a sign language).
You are not incorrect. I'm sure my signs look just atrocious, but I'm happy to use them and be understood, even if I'm getting snickered at. Within the community, people come to learn sign at all different ages, even kids who were deaf from a super young age but were raised oral and didn't get to sign until they were young adults. So lots of people sign with a non-native accent. It's sort of notable to speak with a native signer, because their accent is so beautiful or whatever. I don't know, I don't know well enough to see the difference. Like I said, I bet my shit is an assault on the eyes.

Quote:
Some of the grammatical properties of ASL (and other sign languages) are very different from spoken languages, partly due to differences in the visual vs. aural mediums. For example, there aren't pronouns like he/she/it, instead they're positional. Aside from pointing at yourself or the person you're referring to (if they're present), you can basically assign a position to someone/something you're talking about in the space around you, and then you and your interlocutor have to remember which space is assigned to who/what (in theory you could use as many positions as you can distinguish, but in practice it's usually less than 8).
This part is surprisingly not difficult! My textbook is amazing (the DVDs are the text, and the paper part is a follow-along workbook), and the actors in the videos totally show you how to do all that, and it feels totally natural.

The difficult part, for me (and for a lot of people), is the facial expressions. They call this the grammar of the language, and I'm not a linguist so I can't disagree. Things like an o-shaped mouth, raised eyebrows, head tilt, and eye gaze are essential parts of the language and have very specific meanings. Signing without them is like doing Tarzan/Frankenstein talk. You can get your message across, but you sound stupid as hell.

Anyway, it's challenging and fun and totally interesting. I didn't think about how I would learn a language that isn't written. How do you take notes, or write a speech? How do you look up a sign in the dictionary? (hint: it's not easy.) How are you quizzed and tested? (hint: on the spot, in front of every-fucking-body.) So, yeah, I'm having to break through a ton of shyness and discomfort with people looking at my face and appendages.

It's good for me, I'm having fun with it. These kids are all young and they're linguists, communication majors, future social workers, so they're amazingly fun and outgoing and a huge departure from the computer science crowd I'm usually surrounded by.

I will be submitting my Capstone project (original research done instead of a thesis for my Master's) to Language Variation and Change... tomorrow.

I don't think I mentioned that I did, in fact, end up going out and collecting a bunch of more data... so I ended up with a total of 67 recordings (although I threw a couple out). So my results found a couple interesting demographic quirks (blacks behave differently from whites, and black females differed significantly in their age pattern from all the other groups). I also found some interesting results with regards to the /str/ vs. /s-ch/ pattern (/s-ch/ as in question or gesture).

Don't expect any good news right away, my professor told me that it generally takes 4-6 months before you would be accepted for publication. I dunno how long it take to hear back "not a chance!" however! She seems pretty optimistic for my chances though.
