Oh wow. We got some All Summer in a Day shit, except it was a few hours, and the skies were blue and there was this weird fireball in the sky--it looked like a shiny copper penny!

The schools have been closed for a couple of days, so IMMEDIATELY every kid in the world was out in the streets playing, plus all the old people were doing their constitutionals and dogs were getting make-up walks. It was actually kind of scary for Flossy, who isn't quite as used to that sort of activity everywhere. WHAT IS THIS, NEW YORK CITY?

It's OK now, though. We just got home before the thunderstorms that are projected to go through Sunday.

Welp, I've got some looting to do.

I called my brother because I was hearing that flooding was happening in Colorado Springs and then Lyons, which are not even close, and was all "Is the whole state under water?" He and his are fine.

I dunno about Colorado, because it never flooded when I lived there, but in Vegas everyone who died in flash floods was doing something really, super stupid. I really don't want to die stupid and I don't want anyone else to either: Do not go someplace to stand right on the edge and gawk at rushing floodwaters. Do not try to drive across rushing floodwaters. Do not try to wade across rushing floodwaters.

Yeah, I am waiting to see how my grampa and gramma are doing. Plus my younger than me aunt that I really give no authority to, and then the cousins. No word yet. But I am sure Mom will call me tomorrow to say that grampa is fine.

I don't think there's ever been a rainy season in LA without someone falling into the aqueduct. Mind you, I only live there for three winters so I could be wrong.

It's weird how there are just these widespread pockets. Like that giant road collapsing river is about two miles from our house, where our big consequence so far has been that it's kind of muddy and the humidity is making our interior doors stick.

Mostly, it's just that a lot of rain fell over a big swath of the state, so we got something close our normal annual rain totals over five days. Our soil is mostly clay, and especially in smaller towns and places that butt up against undeveloped areas, we just don't have the drainage systems to handle all that water.

There's a municipal airport here where small planes and helicopters fly out when there's a natural disaster in the state. Usually, they're all heading in about the same direction, but they're spreading out in all directions right now. It's really strange.

We got yesterday mostly off, with only a few mild showers, but then it started raining again last night, and just in the past half hour or so, it's picked up A LOT. It is now raining harder than it did throughout this whole thing.

This is really, really bad.

(We're still good, and the basement is dry, but we're going to be stuck here for a while.)

I'm pretty sure that my underwears are considerably less sturdy and voluminous than you're imagining.

Anyways, we actually were the safer ground in the flood area. We did end up getting a little flooding in the basement, and the schools are still closed, so there are children screaming recreationally outside right now. (Also the humidity makes my hair get really big and the doors stick.)

Shit is still really fucked up all around us, though. Roads mangled, 19000 houses destroyed or seriously damaged, plus 50 bridges, a bunch of other property damage, and so far 8 people confirmed dead. The last one was yesterday, when the ground gave way and swept a man three miles down a creek. I think there are still people stranded and without utilities. There were a bunch of people in Evans under a mandatory no flush order for ten days or something, so they had port a potties at the ends of their streets.

I was talking to a lady yesterday about how we feel really guilty about getting off so lightly.

Old man winter has officially arrived bringing a foot of snow over 3 days, and we're dropping to -24 overnight with -32 wind chill.


If it got this cold in hell Satan's balls would freeze off. I've got blisters on my hands from shoveling snow and I'm working outdoors this year, but I'll take this weather over tornadoes and hurricanes any day.

It's 38ºF here right now, but it's supposed to dip below freezing in the morning, while it's raining. I hope to hell it isn't going to be a bad ice storm.

Yeah, ice storms suck. Particularly if there are trees and light poles with electrical wires on them, a reliable power outage. I wish more US cities would put that shit underground. Our utilities are laughably outdated here.

What's hilarious to me is that the little suburb I grew up in has all that shit underground just for looks. The temperature there hardly ever drops below freezing.

I had underground utilities in Salt Lake City. It sucked. Every time there were heavy rains or during the January and Spring thaws, the cable and power would go out because water got into the conduit or junction boxes.
