Reading Which series should I read?

My little bro' has just given me a huge bag of books.

He started me off on Steven Erikson's "Malazan books of the Fallen" which are fantastic but we are now waiting for the next book in the series.

So, to keep me entertained he's given me books 1-9 of Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series and 1-5 of George RR Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series.

Anyone here read either of these series? I've started "Wizard's First Rule" but only just, so can easily start on the "Song of Ice and Fire" books.

Any recommendations on which series is the more compelling?

Those books sound like fantasy series, correct? If so, I love the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. Five books in all. I'd highly recommend them. I also like Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone series.

Yessir! They are fantasy books. I've never heard of either of the series you've mentioned TomJoe, although I've definitely heard of Michael Moorcock. Is that the only series he's written?

Michael Moorcock has written several series, all with the "Eternal Champion" theme to them, but Elric of Melnibone is by far the best works of his that I've read. His Corum series (The Chronicles of Corum) would come in second IMO.

His books also draw heavily on ancient Celtic mythology
The quote above is from one of your links TomJoe. The Michael Moorcock one. I stopped myself from reading too much because it went into spoiler zone but, I love Celtic mythology, so they are going on my list.

However, I have to get through the big bag of books I have here. :)

You'd probably love the Prydain Chronicles too then. They're drawn heavily from Welsh mythology.

Sword of Truth is a silly, fluffy series overall, yet somehow manages to be heavy handed on the political issues addressed, like Communism. The couple saves the world, then they save the world again, and again.

Can't recommend it actually, though parts of it were enjoyable, especially the Mord Sith.

I also didn't like Song of Ice and Fire as much as most people did, but it is considered the best of the best amongst many aficianados of the genre.

There's no way I'm an aficionado, but I do like fantasy series.

From the comments so far, I'll probably carry on with the Sword of Truth series then, seeing as I've already started it.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one on earth who didn't like it.

I love fantasy novels, Lees, but I don't believe I've read those. Please let me know how they are.
