That notch at the top isn't just a sensor pack, it's a design element, one that apple is heavily pushing.

Apple is turning a design quirk into the iPhone X’s defining feature - The Verge

This means designers are being told not to black bar the notch but to design around it, making the best apps those that pretend as if a big bite isn't being taken out of the top or side, or that's just a normal thing, oh and the swipe based home controls are a bit sensitive so could you just move any of your on screen controls inwards so the users fat hands to block more of the gaming screen... that would great...

Honestly, I think Apple is brilliant. It's not so much their products, but their marketing. They've essentially managed to develop the corporate version of a cult of personality.

So, I'm really lucky I have access to more than one computer, because iTunes on my Windows desktop is shitting the bed, and I mistakenly let it attempt to update my iPhone.

Why, why did I let it try? I had the same exact disaster the last time I tried this.

I had one of those experiences with two-factor authorization on my Apple ID. I have only one Apple machine, my laptop, and my password wasn't working. Took me two "recoveries," more than a MONTH, and a phone call to Apple Support to find out that two-factor authorization REQUIRES you to have at least two Apple devices.

I don't think that's the way Apple would state it, but that yes, Apple's products are, to some extent, Veblen goods.

Of course, by no means is that the entirety of their appeal. And it applies more to certain of their products than others (iPhone probably being the most that way). For some people, having the most recent iPhone is a fashion statement, and part of the point is that it's more expensive than most Android options.

Hmmm ...

Even if all Apple goods are Veblen goods, I don't see how that would be grounds on which to ascribe any particular attitude to Apple, such as "You ought to feel privileged to pay more".

I grant it might be grounds to ascribe some such attitude to those who buy Apple goods, and that would explain why others would take a correspondingly negative attitude to Apple consumers and transfer it to Apple, as Basset Hound seems to me to be doing.

Default Re: I hate Apple

As Veblen goods, part of the point is having the price be higher, so that it is unaffordable for some consumers, which makes it more exclusive. And Apple is, I'm sure, aware of the way their products are used as status symbols by some purchasers and, I'm also sure, incorporate that into their pricing schemes. So they may have higher prices partly because they know that will increase the status symbol aspect of their products.

It is entirely possible, perhaps even likely, that Apple does not sincerely hold an attitude of "you ought to feel privileged to pay more." They may privately hold an attitude of "some people will feel privileged to pay more, because consumers aren't totally rational and because of the way status works in society, so we can afford to raise the price because of this, and that will increase our profit margins."

However, marketers of Veblen goods cannot admit this publicly without potentially damaging the value of their brand. Louis Vitton will not likely publicly say "Our bags are not really any better in practical quality or aesthetics than [insert high-quality but more affordable brand] but people just feel special because they know other people can't afford them." Yet I'm sure that many (most?) people who work at Louis Vitton realize that's what the brand is based on. But that doesn't mean that their marketing doesn't indirectly try to feed the perception of "you should feel privileged to pay more." Emphasizing "exclusivity", for example, is the more positive spin a brand would put on that. Creating artificial scarcity is another way of doing that. Some of these luxury brands would also prefer to destroy excess product than allow them to be sold at a discount, because if poor people are seen using their products, it will damage their brand. One might say that the walled garden/proprietary cords/etc. aspect of Apple, which makes it so that you need other Apple products probably fuels a perception of exclusivity as well.

But like I said, Apple is not a "pure" Veblen good, certainly not to the extent that a brand like Louis Vitton or Supreme is. They do, in fact, make a quality product, one of the best on the market. So they don't engage in all of those tactics nor to the same extent. But I don't think it's weird to pick up that Apple promotes the "status symbol" aspect of their products to some extent.

Basset Hound may be describing that in a more negative fashion, but it's not like it comes out of nowhere. What would you describe their attitude as? Why do you think their prices are higher than you might expect based on the technical specs of their products?

Correct me if you think I am wrong in believing that "Veblen goods" is a theoretical concept rather than an observed phenomenon. All the practical examples offered seem to be, as you have described the iPhone, "Veblen to some extent, but not pure Veblen"; so veblenesque, we might say. Or, in old-fashioned parlance, premium. I am happy for the discussion to head off in this direction if you feel the desire, but I want to note that having a product or brand that ticks some or even all the Veblen boxes is still not in itself evidence of an unpleasant attitude to the public. As I think you have conceded.

Basset Hound may be describing that in a more negative fashion, but it's not like it comes out of nowhere.

Basset Hound described that in terms of an attitude at Apple that would be unpleasant. I think that indicates a negative attitude that Basset Hound holds towards Apple.

lol You are asking me about my attitude to the Apple brand.

I don't know that Apple prices are higher than the technical specs warrant. Do the technical specs include the build quality and the aesthetic appeal of the styling? The reputation for reliability and security? Does not being preloaded with Microsoft or Google products count as a technical feature?

This is modern day apple, when looking at price the user needs to look at the cost of something going wrong. What’s the price of replacing a battery designed to be replaceable only by apple and never the user? What about a screen that apple refuses to send the cheap repair parts out to authorized repair specialists? What’s the price of replacing a bad ram stick that’s been soldered in, or a bad SSD that has been keyed to your specific model for no reason? Or the price of a new dongle?
Etc.

These days it seems like apple products “just work” because if they don’t you’re out of luck and should just buy a new one.

SO fucking true. I love my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. I have replaced the battery, and the screen, and the fan as maintenance, and swapped out the HD for an SSD and upgraded the RAM for performance. I did that for the cost of parts, and could find pretty cheap used parts. But still, it is seven years old, and I know I can't reasonably expect more than another year or maybe two out of it. Catalina will support this model, but I expect macOS to move on after that.

I would love another Mac. I have always used Windows machines for work and my Mac at home. I do not have any interest in switching; I vastly prefer the macOS interface for my casual home use. But if I can't REPLACE THE BATTERY, or have to send it to Apple for the most routine maintenance, I will be pretty enraged for a long time, so I have to consider my position. The butterfly keyboard response was pretty bungled and did not inspire confidence.

I think Apple has kind of stopped caring about the Mac, which makes sense if you look at the numbers, but stinks for users.

Tales from the Apple Store, yesterday.

Her iPhone 6 burped up the latest update. Went to Apple Store, they fixed on the spot.

Guy next to us, his phone didn't connect through the plug, replaced on the spot with help recovering all his stuff via AirDrop to the new device.

The thing I like most about Apple are the reliable security updates.
