Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I flew one of my model planes today with an autopilot system, and then viewed the flight log data in Google Earth.
The different colours are for different flight modes - the blue is where it was flying laps of the field by itself, the pink is when it did a 'return to home' (circles the launch point) either because I selected that or because it 'breached a fence.' The yellow bits are where it breached the (virtual) fence, either by flying too far away, or too low. The other colours are various other flight modes - either fully manual, or with different levels of autopilot assistance.
I think there should be a way to record a video with Google Earth, recreating the flight with a pilot's eye view from inside the cockpit - but I've not figured out how to do that yet.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
I figured out the pilot's eye video thing. This is terrible quality though because: - I was running Google Earth on an old slow laptop, and it would have taken forever to render the video at high resolution.
- For some unknown reason, it's running at about twice the real speed, but you can fix that in YouTube by watching it at 0.5x normal speed.
- I don't know if it's even possible to get rid of the Google watermarks and mapping provider overlays.
- No editing before uploading, so the first bit is before it even took off.
- The whole thing is long and boring - this was just a proof of concept.
I did a loop-the-loop at 07:15

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
It's broken again.
(I have one thing I want to check, where I had to add a new connector to a pretty short wire to the new fuse, and was a little worried about the connection, just because I didn't have much to work with. So maybe it came loose from the tumbling.)

My good fellow, that would seem quite improper.

Quite so. I refrained from taking such a drastic action.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
Our granddaughter left her old 16GB iPhone 6 here when she left for Australia a couple of years back. (We'd bought her an iPhone 7 as a high-school graduation gift.) She didn't remember the passcode for it; so I tried several different ones until I'd disabled the phone. Then I Googled how to reset the thing once it had been disabled, installed iTunes on my Windows laptop, signed into an old (no-long-used) Apple account, and did a hard reset of the phone. It didn't work overnight, so I waited until I got to work, switched the data-transfer cord to the other of my two USB ports, and it finished in 20 minutes. Now I've got an iPhone to play around with a little, in the hope that I can be of more use to Mrs. S when she has an issue with hers. (I really like the "back" button in Android.)

That and the easy button to select your open programs I miss a lot, the overall handling of Android felt nicer than Apple. But there's a critical mass of people in my life that make FaceTime and iMessage a thing I don't really want to give up.

We use FB Messenger for video calls, and put up with whatever issues there are between iMessage and SMS. I just don't want to give up the flexibility of being able to install a third-party launcher to make my phone look and function the way I like.

You'll love Android 10 then. They've removed the back, and home, buttons and replaced them with gestures. At least according to my experience helping my mother set up her new phone. I myself am still on Android Stone Age.

Re: In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments
For my own petty accomplishment:
My ISP is doing some (well warned-about) maintenance work today so my broadband is subject to interruptions. I've connected to mobile data with a portable wifi hotspot and - this is the accomplishment - tweaked my IP routing table priorities so I can still connect to my local network (Raspberry Pis, printer, etc) as well as the web of the wide world.

I hated that. But I found a setting (somewhere) that puts the back button and the gang back where they belong.

Samsung (at least, on the Galaxy line through Android 11) allows you to keep them. And so does my backup phone (a Nokia 7.1, stuck with Android 10), where I can choose to have two or three--or no--buttons. That phone runs Android One.

Motorola is supposed to have a pretty clean version of Android. Have you searched in Settings for Navigation, to see if you're presented with any options?

Yes and I'm deeply offended you might think otherwise!

That's why I didn't mention it at first--I figured you must have checked, and that asking would offend you. Samsungs have their own skins, too, so I wouldn't necessarily expect other brands to offer the same options as a Samsung, but Nokias run Android One, and I've always heard that Motorola runs something very close to stock. So when I saw the options in my Nokia, I favored the chance of being helpful over the risk of giving offense.

Almost not petty, if you have ADD and know what the fuck I'm talking about.
I still have had the same employee badge I was issued on my first day, more than 7 years ago. Never lost or replaced.

Do you still have the original lanyard and plastic badge holder? I have quite a collection (they don't expect you to return those).

Ew, no. Those things get crusty and need to be replaced at least annually.
