Did we lose a year? I haven't watched the episode yet, but TWOP says it's 1962. I thought Season 1 took place over the course of 1960 (ending on Thanksgiving of 1960). Did it take place over 2 years? No, it couldn't have because the election was that November as well.

What happened to 1961? Is TWOP wrong?

Liv bullied me into watching Season 1 on DVD. The first three discs should arrive via Netflix tomorrow.

ETA: Or not. The availability has changed to "very long wait."

Can you watch it online? Because you should. :bully:

Jackie Kennedy's White House tour was broadcast on Valentine's Day of 1962, Ensign, so we have definitely dropped a year.

Okay, I watched it now. What did I like?

I like how Peggy's and Joan's relationship has evolved, and both of their treatment of the new secretary. It seems like Peggy's all grown up, and she's got some respect from the queen bee.

I love Mr. and Mrs. Draper together. He seems genuine happy with her, and she's doing things that make her happy, so it would be cool if they could both be happy for a while before it all inevitably implodes on them.

How divine was her outfit for their Valentine's date? That pink dress with the fur coat. I almost plotzed.

So, any guesses on who the book was sent to? I imagine one of the ex-girlfriends.

ETA: I was disappointed about the lost year, but having watched this episode, I'm totally okay with it. I'm glad they skimmed over the last year of Peggy's life (the two-second recap was plenty for me), and the Drapers' relationship mend, and all that crap. It was nice to have a lot of the ugliness wrapped-up off-screen, and start the new season fresh and happy. The only thing is, I don't want them to completely fast-forward into the sixties. I'm not ready for long hair and beards and hippies and civil rights. I just want the precision haircuts and clothing styles and WASPish repression for another couple decades, okay?

Did you guys notice that Sal has a girlfriend? How cute is that?!

I'm intentionally not reading this thread because of spoiler fear, but I watched the first episode and enjoyed it. I love the look and feel of it, and the writers have totally nailed the casual chauvinism.

I've come up with a good drinking game based on this show. Here are the rules:

1) Every time a character drinks, drink.

Pretty sure this will get you totally fucking hammered in about an hour.

Ok, I have a fashion question for you then. I know the ties were really thin back in the day, but how do they tie the knots so tiny? And more importantly, why?

Okay, I read the television without pity for the latest ep before watching the ep. Shame on me, I know, but it's a good thing I did because otherwise I wouldn't have understood a lot of what was going on.

But the twop thing went on about how incredibly racist Joan is, which yeah I guess. But it wasn't her racism that stood out to me, it was her candor. And she's always been candid, so I don't know what part of it was supposed to come as a surprise. And when she asked Paul, "Which part isn't true?" I thought she was right on the money.

Oh I agree that she was horribly bitchy to the woman's face. But she's a bitch to everybody! Yes, it was definitely racially motivated, but it's Joan's MO to figure out what makes her superior (in her own mind) to whomever she is up against, and exploit that. Yeah, she's a racist. I don't deny that.

But I still think she was right about Paul.

Plot devices about power aside, did anyone despise that skanky slut of a comedian's manager/wife as much as I did?
