So essentially they're both geniuses - which all of us are supposed to be, since there is so much about the universe that cries out to be understood...but of course we're not. And if we're content to write it all off as "luck of the draw", we have no reason to inquire any further as to why that might be.

The Mayan based languages I've heard are pretty beautiful too. The woman I heard giving a speech in one of the native languages sounded like a bird trilling.

Yes, there's one which I will also mis-spell; "purperecha"? It is the language my pre-Hispanic Mexican ancestors likely spoke.

This "mom" thinks "her child" is too stupid to ... ...know what he ought to be interested in.
She's conditioning the child to rely on her to translate reality for him, to see the world through her eyes rather than explore it with his own.
If by similar means the majority of children are so conditioned, one would expect the majority of adults to place inordinate faith in authority figures... and sure enough, anyone who takes a cursory glance around him can see this proclivity manifested in plenty of his fellow Earthlings, even if he cannot see it in himself.

Oh.
Do you have suggestions for appropriate parental interaction with a 2 year old?

First things first. Is what I'm saying making any sense to you?

Yes it makes sense in that I understand what you are saying. I disagree so far, but I understand.

If you disagree, either you don't understand or there's nothing to be understood in what I said. Since any suggestion would necessarily based on the same underlying principles, it won't make any sense to you either.
So the conversation really has nowhere to go until you tell me what you disagree with and why.

I disagree that describing and naming things previously not experienced by a 2 year old, which teaches the language and communication, is telling that child what they ought to be interesting in, or in any way hinders natural curiosity or contemporaneous and autonomous exploration of the world.

Never said that. Obviously a child will ask "What's that?", and it's perfectly proper to tell him what "that" is called.
In any case, if you can't see that the woman in the ad is commandeering the child's attention and thus robbing him of the ability to direct it where his natural curiosity would lead him, we do not have a meeting of the minds.

Re: How to turn your child into an idiot.
Well you can't tell from just the audio what the child is looking at or is interested in. She's teaching the child about the water and the sand, which I imagine would get the child's attention if they've never been to the beach.
Most of the times I've been around small kids, usually my nieces and nephews, the adults around them will teach them about what they are looking at. "Oh, that's a doggy, can you say doggy?" ect. Sometimes they will try to get the child to focus on something in particular to teach them, but if you've spent much time around kids you'll know it's a lot easier to teach them about the things they are looking at or interested in already.
You don't get nearly as much forced learning until you send the kids off to school.

Why "doggy" rather than "dog"?

Yeah, that's what the woman in the ad is doing...but why?

How do you think children become susceptible to that "forced learning" in the first place?

Do you think it better to teach a child not to touch a hot stove, or would you rather them find out from their own natural curiosity and possibly burn their hands? Some things are better taught by parents/adults than by experience. That doesn't apply to the Ad, just an example of when you'd need to direct a child's learning.
There's no reason in the Ad why the woman would be directing the child's attention in any particular direction. Yet you assume that she is. I listened to the audio when the post was still fairly new but I can't get it open today. Is there anything you can quote that makes it seem like she is trying to pull the child's attention away from something else and focus it on what she's describing?

Obviously. The woman in the ad wasn't teaching anything like that, other than maybe not to eat the sand. I'm talking about everything else BUT those things which put the child in danger if he doesn't know them.

Opps, sorry I realized that you were gonna respond like that so I edited the post. Sorry.
But I was editing while you were posting.

Yes, there is. Such women have an unacknowledged desire to be the source of their children's sense of wonder.

I don't assume, I know. In fact, I'm not sure how anyone could NOT know, having heard the ad.

There is no "trying" involved, any more than an attractive woman in a short skirt has to try to attract the attention of men. It arises naturally from what women like that see as love.

Re: How to turn your child into an idiot.
You know nothing, yguy. First off, this is a commercial. It is done by actors, in a staged situation. This woman is merely reciting lines, albeit with somewhat over-the-top inflection and tone.
If one were to hear this conversation exactly the same way IRL, you might have a point. Might, I say. Certainly not to the level of calamity you seem to attribute it. Fact is, there are a lot of parents out there who don't do a perfect job. Likely, none could be said to do a perfect job. If you would like to soberly discuss potential parenting problems there are far greater ones to get worked up about than how much a well-meaning mother commands their child's attention.
I've seen no comments from you in this thread that warrant serious discussion. Perhaps you should work on backing up more of your wild claims in the Politics forum. This spreading of your efforts seems to be affecting the quality of your trolling.
Also, remind me again how many children you have raised, from which springs this great font of knowledge and opinion on the methods and problems of parenting?

Arguably, this is among your most penetrating observations; but as usual, it doesn't mean what you think it does. Somebody spent a good deal of money getting it produced and broadcast, and it sure as Hell wasn't for the purpose of making moms who DO treat their children in such a revolting manner look bad.

First of all, it isn't about how much, but about why.
Second, if anyone here is interested in a "sober discussion" of parenting problems, it's not you - unless, of course, said discussion can be kept on a shallow enough level that it doesn't threaten any of your sacred cows.

Neither have you seen anything worthy of intelligent refutation, evidently.
