An article about a responsible gun owner

Quote:
I’ve fired it period, not at a person I hope. I was in my house in North Carolina. It was fall. I heard someone walking on the leaves. And somebody actually turned the knob, so I said, “Stand four feet back because I’m going to shoot now!” BOOM! BOOM! The police came by and said, “Ms. [Responsible Gun Owner], the shots came from inside the house.” I said, “Well, I don’t know how that happened.”

Nevada man fatally shoots confused birthday partier who knocked on wrong door

At least it wasn't Florida this time :sadcheer:

Additionally, it must be Thursday, because there's been another campus shooting, this time in Seattle. Two wounded, one dead; the suspect is in custody.

On a fanfiction group, I'm on, the shooting was mentioned by someone who was a student there. I wanted to snark that a campus shooting in the US happens so frequently that it no longer qualifies as headline news. I decided discretion was the better part of valor.

That one belongs in the mainstream media sucks thread because this is total bullshit:

Quote:
The gunman was reloading a shotgun when the student, working as a building monitor, used pepper spray and knocked him down, Police Capt. Chris Fowler told reporters.
First of all, CNN is telling us that there is in fact such a thing as a good guy without a gun. XD yeah right.

Second, and even more odious, this imaginary good guy without a gun supposedly stopped a bad guy with a gun. That goes against both science and the vision of the Framers.

That story also disproves one of the NRA's favourite talking points about magazine size. If magazine size didn't matter, the dude wouldn't have had to reload and the other dude wouldn't have had time to tackle him.

Anyway, the Internet can be pretty cool at times:

BBC News - Seattle Pacific 'hero' Jon Meis has wedding gifts paid for

Quote:
The US student who disarmed a gunman at his university on Thursday has had most of the gifts on his wedding registry paid for by well-wishers.

Jon Meis has been hailed a hero by the US media for stopping the gunman, who had killed one person and wounded three at Seattle Pacific University.

...

American media have reported that as people learned of Mr Meis's bravery, and his wedding on 21 June, they wanted to thank him by buying gifts on the online wedding registry set up by him and his fiancee.

Links to the registry were circulated online, including a post on the social network Reddit reading: "This is the wedding registry for the man who subdued the SPU gunman. You know what to do."

Every item listed that could be bought online has since been purchased.

One admirer also launched an online campaign to pay for his honeymoon. The target on the site is $5,000 (£2,970) but it has already reached more than $8,000 (£4,760).

Mr Meis is said to be an electric engineering student. He was not injured in the shooting and reportedly carried pepper spray because of his part-time role as a university monitor.
In other news, some shithead left a loaded gun in plain sight on a toy aisle in a Target store in Myrtle Beach, SC:

More details on loaded gun found in Target toy aisle

Thankfully, an adult found it and removed it before any kids found it.

Gun control advocates are calling for Target to ban firearms in their stores in response. Ammosexuals are saying it was planted by an anti-gun operative trying to discredit them and force gun control, because they are asshat conspiracy theorists. I think they need to shut the fuck up and focus on the fact that a fucking moron left a loaded gun where a kid could find it.

Longdon was shocked and embarrassed, she told me, but she didn’t falter. “Wow, aren’t you a big man,” she said as he turned and walked away. Instead of calling for security, she wheeled herself to a restroom to clean herself off. She was tired—she lives with constant physical pain—and didn’t want to miss her flight.

...

After a fundraiser one night during the program, Longdon returned home around 10 p.m., parked her ramp-equipped van and began unloading herself. As she wheeled up to her house, a man stepped out of the shadows. He was dressed in black and had a rifle, “like something out of a commando movie,” Longdon told me. He took aim at her and pulled the trigger. Longdon was hit with a stream of water. “Don’t you wish you had a gun now, bitch?” he scoffed before taking off.
She was also subjected to threats of rape and murder, of course.

Several weeks later, an Open Carry supporter posted her name and phone number on YouTube. She began to receive threatening texts and calls, she said.

“They were calling me names I haven’t heard since I was in middle school,” she said. “They were calling me a whore and all kinds of nasty names. … I think there’s some really crazy, unstable people out there.”

The Revolution began, and then quickly ended. The cowards committed suicide instead of going out in a blaze of glory. They are traitors to their cause, whatever that was.

I don't know why they don't go ahead an impeach Obama, they have the votes to do it in the House. Of course, that doesn't mean the Senate would convict, so it would be kind of pointless. But then, pointless is their specialty.

If I had to guess, it's because impeachment is very popular with the wingnut faction, but very unpopular with everyone else. So, they throw red meat to the base by talking about impeachment constantly, but don't suffer the hit they would take with everyone else if they actually tried to go ahead with it.

Apparently there was a Concealed Carry License holder with a gun in Walmart who tried to stop the bad guy with a gun, but didn't realize the bad guy's wife was nearby with a gun and lost his life as a result, victim #3. I guess the only thing that can stop a good guy with a gun from stopping a bad guy with a gun is another bad guy with a gun.

You will never guess who was an Alex Jones fan. (Spoiler: you will totally guess who was an Alex Jones fan).

Incidentally, also, too, here's a story about what Ding noted about one of the shooting victims being armed. I know, right? You'd think a good guy with a gun would be able to stop a bad guy with a gun. Who would have thought that the NRA might be full of shit?

Incidentally I can't wait for people to start denying that this shooting had a political motivation. Actually I'm sure they already have but I'm too lazy to look for them because I don't want my faith in humanity to plummet further. You don't have to show me up by noting examples of this, btw.

Good piece on Balloon Juice about "The Kookification of Gun Culture".

Lt. Col. Robert Bateman's reaction is worth reading too, as is Charlie Pierce's.

Incidentally, evidently the "good guy with a gun" was a trained police officer, even. If a trained police officer can't stop shooters like this then average folks don't have a fscking chance.

edit: Nice to see the Washington Post asking the obvious question here.

Also, this Onion piece is in response to the Isla Vista thing, but it's worth reposting.

Charles Johnson points out that Stupidest Man on the Internet Jim Hoft's premise that the shooters were "neo-Nazis" is not even correct. Las Vegas officials pointed out that "they put a swastika on one of the policemen they murdered, as a statement that cops are like Nazis." Johnson has also pointed out an interview with the shooter that aired before the shooting, plus a list of postings on Facebook and Google+ and a bunch of other similar things.

Johnson is pretty much always worth reading on right-wing domestic terrorism. He's basically made covering this his beat in the last few years.

And of course, Digby is worth reading too.

In other news, it appears the shooters also started out with plans to attack a courthouse but luckily killed themselves before they got around to it.

We talk a lot about Responsible Gun Owners, but it's high time all those school children targets of opportunity started taking some responsibility themselves, instead of whining about how they don't want to be shot as though they've never heard of the Second Amendment.

New Bulletproof Blanket For The Kids Is Only 4/5ths As Terrible An Idea As It Sounds

Quote:
Meet the Bodyguard Blanket from ProTecht, the brainchild of an Oklahoma podiatrist who knows that when it comes to Our Kids, half-measures are often just fine. If we can’t do anything to reduce the number of guns in circulation or build storm shelters in schools in tornado country, maybe we’d feel better if every child has a 5/16-inch pad made from “Dyneema, a high-density plastic used for ballistic armor that is lighter than Kevlar.” Problem solved! Or at least half-assed!

The Bodyguard Blanket has arm straps, so kids can wear it like a backpack — probably not all day, just when there’s a weather alert or a forecast of light to moderate semiautomatic arms fire.
Duck and cover, kids!

List of school shootings in America since Sandy Hook

It's utterly depressing how many there are on this list :<

Right on. I can't wait until anyone wanting to purchase a gun has to be shown pictures of school shooting victims, given false information about how firing a gun has been linked to prostate cancer, and submit to a colonoscopy.

It makes total sense. Both are legal activities that causes death and someone else doesn't like it. The courts support the right to engage in those legal activities even if deaths result from them. So you have to stop it somehow. Right.

In 2010 31,672 people died from firearms. Homicides, suicides, and accidents. CDC Data

In 2010 there were 765,651 induced abortions. CDC Data

The best way to stop these legal activities is to regulate them out of existence using zoning violations, taxes, waiting periods, fees, shaming, etc. It's what good authoritarians do when they're on the loosing side of an issue.
