Wing Chun. Rented this once about 15 years ago, loved it, could never find it again. Netflix has it now. Michelle Yeoh being awesome. Humorous, and also very good martial arts.

I completely agree with what I had heard from several sources. This film feels like they had an entertaining character comedy and slapped on a few extra gross jokes so they could market it as The Hangover with chicks. Somehow, it worked. Kristen Wiig rocked.

I heard the controversy about this long before I saw it. Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro, made it and Miyazaki didn't approve at all, neither did Ursula LeGuin who acted like it was a bait and switch that the son, not his retired father, directed the picture. I read today that Goro made it in about half the time Hayao takes to make a film. It did show that the backgrounds didn't have the care and attention I was used to in a Studio Ghibli film. I first noticed that a chase scene I thought was on sand didn't show sand kicking up under the horse's and wolves feet. Only in one shot was there dust and I honestly couldn't tell if it was supposed to be sand, hard earth or dry grass. I'm used to every blade of grass being clearly defined and moving with the wind, so the shortcut was very obvious to me. Still the character design was pure Studio Ghibli, the voice acting in the English dub was quality and the story was good. If you like Miyazaki films check it out.

I wound up only wanting to like this more than I actually did. There is the triumphant return of a brilliant portrayal of Holmes by Robert Downy Jr and his usually faithful companion Jude Law's Dr. Watson. But I suppose it had to happen, the novelty of it all tarnishes the lovely brass Victorian-punk nature of it all.
There is a lot more action and explosions and a lot less romance, both to the movie's credit, generally speaking. Jared Harris is fantastic as Holmes' arch nemesis Professor Moriarty. But I had the feeling that Moriarty was under valued, or at least, used too soon. I'm in a bit of a quandary, see. I want so much to hate sequels but I'm also a sucker for actual franchises. I wish this was more like an Empire Strikes Back, darker, more tragic act 2 than what it is. Keep Moriarty as the mastermind behind various machinations but do bring him further into the story and then have certain events of Shadows play out in a third installment.
But that's not what they did. And doubly sad for those of us familiar with another, much lesser film (also based on a superior literary work), will recognize Moriarty's game and feel intellectually cheated. That is an ugly sentence and it tells you nothing and I'm sorry about that. After seeing what M is capable of in the first movie, his big reveal is something of a let down once you see all the pieces.
A Game of Shadows is still a fun action romp with some modest twists and turns. Included are a lot of the things you probably loved about the first and few of the things you didn't. But overall I'm not sure it's worth the big ticket price for the theatre.
I had intended to see the new Mission: Impossible movie this weekend but it only opened in IMAX, regular screens won't get it until the 21st. It's possible that I carried a little disappointment into Sherlock Holmes.
Bort is really smart and I agree with everything he said re: Game of Shadows. one additional thing that drove me nuts is that every time the film shifts into Guy Ritchie trademark slow down, jump cut, focus in, speed up, acceleration sound effect, zoom out, repeat mode it's used to show us Holmes' super fast thought process in action. Well, almost every time. There's also a chase scene where it's used to show us how cool it is when bullets and artillery shells and whatnot shatter trees. ADEM NERD RAEG! IF YOU'RE USING A VISUAL CUE FOR SOMETHING, IT HAS TO ALWAYS BE THE VISUAL CUE FOR THAT THING!

That chase scene through the forest was 100%, gold-plated shit.

I just saw a trailer for a new movie starring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. The accent was horrendous. I guess it might work if you've NEVER heard Thatcher speak on tv at all. Or heard anyone speak British English at all...

I can't take seriously human-sized duct work leading to a vaulted computer. Make it smaller, or divided up by sheet metal into smaller ducts. Get through that, fuckers! No camera inside the duct? No camera pointing at the grate at the top of the vault? And the utter lack of ultrasonic sensors in the vault room--they'd make everything else redundant. We're supposed to believe the C.I.A. is populated by retards--they're not politicians.

Interesting Watser, because my English wife that has lived here all her life said her voice was 'spot on'. She was very impressed by the accent and thought Meryl nailed it.

We know how to do British accents:
Even Irish accents:
Did I mention how good our Scottish accents are?*
We still need some work on our Welsh:

Asked a couple people at work today too, they all thought it was very good and sounded very much like Thatcher. These people all grew up listening to Thatcher speak, so I think you've got it wrong ol' boy
Hmm, I guess my prejudice against Meryl Streep got the better of me. I've never found her very convincing in anything, even though everyone keeps telling me how great she is...
My friends, with the terrible girl child, told me The Muppets sucked and wasn't for kids.
I don't think they actually watched the muppets the first time around.
My child liked it fine and I enjoyed it as well.
I particularly liked the "80s robot" some good jokes there.
