Elder Scrolls Online
Is anyone else planning on playing this? It's an MMORPG based on the Elder Scrolls world/lore and I'm thinking it's pretty much a must-try for anyone who loves the series. I applied to be a beta tester, we'll see if I get in. If not then I've already started working up my character. I'm actually excited about an MMO for a change. This'll be my first one.

Mega Server
Huh. The idea of a mega server sounds interesting. I wonder how well it'll actually work.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
Do you know if it's actually by Bethesda? I've heard that it isn't but the official trailer you posted a while back was from them.
I am interested in it but the thought of dealing with assholes is a turn off. However, it's a fabulous world and it would be nice to explore it without all of the hassles of being the Hero of the Prophecy!!! and all.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
See, when I first heard of it it was only Zenimax. Now it does look like Bethesda's onboard. We could just start a guild. I'm not interested in playing with teenagers and their wonderful wit.

I wonder if they'll let you pick which lunar type your Khajiit is? Because I know that's what you're going to pick!

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
That would be awesome! I'll probably have to create most of the character on paper, I can't imagine they'd be that thorough.
I need to work out how to create characters on paper for this. If only there was a book...

It sounds like what Champions Online and Star Trek Online (and maybe a few other games) have. For the most part, everyone is connected to the same server, though not everyone is in the same place. Even though, say, one hundred people are in the same town or same part of town, you won't see one hundred characters around you. They are likely shunted into different instances of the town. If you and a friend are in different instances you can still communicate and there will be a mechanism in place to get you together so you can go hunt 20 butterflies wings.
After poking at the website, signing up for beta and watching a couple of videos, I'm pretty on board for this to happen. I'm not all that big on fantasy, and I passed on both Morrowind and Oblivion, I still like the world that they built and I like Bethesda as a game producer. I'm guessing out of my ass, but the biggest and maybe only hook for this game over any other is the world. Being able to explore all of Tamriel (both physically and lore-logically) is kind of a big deal. The big trick, of course, is how they decide to balance the classes around each other and how the various permutations work together (or against each other).

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
So, anyone want to tell me some things I should do/avoid in a MMO? Yeah, I know nothing. All the guilds I've applied to have turned me down because I've never played online before. Sucks.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
There is one thing that is common to all MMOs since the beginning of time. In at least one of the starting zones there will be a zone-wide broadcast chat channel in which you will be tempted to voice your opinion. Do not fall to temptation. It is an abyss from which there is no escape. WoW, being the most oft played has the worst example of such a channel - you need only mention or ask about Barrens Chat.
Imagine a chat channel that is home to the most idiotic, socially inept and libertarian viewpoints. Now multiply that by a thousand and you will being to understand how horrible and bottomless the trap is.
Other than that, playing in an MMO shouldn't be any more difficult than an internet forum, except with swords and magic. But then, maybe I'm special and have just happened to luck into the decent people.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
Do they have a general chat channel? If so, you can try broadcasting something like "Casual [insert character class] looking for guild." "Casual" generally gives a heads-up that you make no claims to being a fanatical ubergamer, while not actually admitting you're a newb. If there aren't yet any guilds that care more about building up their ranks than getting power gamers, there will be (assuming the game community keeps growing).

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
Also, I wouldn't bother trying to find a guild before you're playing the game.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
You guys.
I did play Nexus War for awhile in a large guild and went a'raidin so there is that. I guess the sheer volume of people and interaction possibilites scares me to death. That's the honest reason I've never played.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
The good thing about MMOs is that you don't have to talk with anyone you don't want to. In addition to an ignore function, there's also the great ability of just walking away or logging out. You may have to calibrate your mental ignore functionality because there can be a lot of information being pushed at your eyeballs. In CoH the action could be big flashy fast and frenetic, which occasionally bothered me if I was wanting to follow a particularly interesting conversation going on in several chat channels.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
It's not like Bethesda can keep the lore straight, so Zenimax ought not to worry about it.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
Rock Paper Shotgun recently had a hands on with Elder Scrolls Online.
The gist: If you're expecting a new, unique, Edler Scrolls experience you'll probably be disappointed. If you're expecting a new, unique MMO experience, you'll probably be disappoited. I'll likely still consider checking it out.
