Re: Miscellany
I finally found evidence that a story I read 20 years ago wasn't fabricated, or at least wasn't fabricated from whole cloth.
Story is, the kid of an old-fashioned Czechoslovakian lady, a first-generation North American immigrant, got REALLY sick, and she invoked an old-fashioned charm to 'cure' him. Specifically, for days and days she told the walls that mala-movis was bothering the wrong child. This was Barry, not Chris! Barry eventually recovered. That remained his name for life.
For twenty years this story bothered me. I'd forget it for six months, google up a bunch of east-european gods, and come up with nothing. Until today, when I found a hit in a Google-digitized book of mythology.
The name I'd remembered was garbled and really obscure. 'mal' is a prefix meaning 'bad' and not really part of the name, which turns out to be 'movaias'. The name was among a set of over a dozen, each for a different kind of disease, and followed by a note that charms invoking these bad names, especially for tricking the demon in question, were once really common.
So the name exists, and the story is actually plausible! Feels good to get that solved after twenty freaking years.

Re: Miscellany
Mal and mauvais are both French synonyms for 'bad'. #related.

Re: Miscellany
Just got out of my first morning lab. We're looking at termite behavior today.
So, after I go through my lecture on scientific methodology with the students (how we're going to be formulating and testing hypotheses regarding termite behavior), and after I give them a brief primer on termite physiology and behavior, I prepare to give each group some termites to observe.
Now, I'm a bit paranoid, having learned in the past that it's dangerous to assume that all of the animals will be in good condition. Thus, being the smart person I am, I ordered two containers of live termites from the biological supply house.
I opened the first and, after a thorough search, couldn't find a single live termite. "Well," I told the students, "that's part of science." Always be prepared: a good life lesson, I figured.
I opened the second container. Not. One. Living. Termite.
Dangit.
It turned out to be a rather short lab. But in a way, it was still a good lesson for the students.

Re: Miscellany
That happens to farmers and greenhouse people a lot. If their ladybugs get delayed for ANY reason along the way, they're nothing but dead keratin.
On the other hand they now sell bumblebees in eco-friendly, smart hands-free packages they chew their own way free from once warm.
A good incentive not to dally along the way.

Re: Miscellany
Along the same lines, there's apparently a shortage of mealworms. None of the local pet stores have any -- I may have to go all the way to Berkeley to keep Li'l Puppet's leopard gecko from starving to death.
How the fuck do you run out of mealworms? It's not like they don't breed in captivity -- little bastards won't STOP breeding.
And no, he probably won't eat crickets. This lazy little bugger won't even catch fast-moving worms.

Not surprising, they've had a pretty rough time of it lately.
