Default Zelda: Skyward Sword

In order to combat thread starting phobia, I'm making a thread about this instead of posting in the generic video games thread.

Anywho, am I the only Nintendo fanboy who's totally stoked for the arrival of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword?

According to Metacritic, it's already gotten 8 perfect scores from reviewers (including IGN, GameInformer, Wired, the Guardian). IGN writes that it's the best Zelda game ever made, the best Wii game and the best use of motion controls on the Wii. And given that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has topped more than one "best video games of all time" list, that's extremely high praise.

Add to that that I'm a big Zelda fan... Now that Nintendo gave me a free download of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and GBA Four Swords on the 3DS, I own every main series Zelda game (and two copies of A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time) except for the GameCube Four Swords Adventure (which I've played through anyway). And I'll be getting a CD of orchestrated arrangements of Zelda music and a gold Wii Motion Plus Wiimote with my copy of the game. I'm probably gonna cream my pants when I get my hands on it.

If I owned or had easy access to a Wii, this game would already have been pre-ordered. I think this game looks gorgeous and the art style, in particular is very attractive.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I love me some Zelda, but a) I'm skeptical that the Wii controls are as-advertised, and not more "isn't it better to waggle your entire wrist rather than press a simple button?" garbage and b) omg Twilight Princess, despite having a few cool bits, was painfully bad.

There seems to be a good amount of consistency in praise for the motion controls, and they definitely say that they're far better than the Twilight Princess version of that, so I'm feeling fairly comfortable that I'll enjoy the controls.

Because yeah, while I did like Twilight Princess, I agree that the motion controls were mostly just tacked on (aiming projectiles worked pretty well though), and there were many times where I wished I could just press B instead.

I got Twilight Princess on the Gamecube, so never had to deal with the motion controls. I am seriously considering getting a Wii for this game, though...

I too am excited about this game. I'm hesitant to buy it because if I'm in a crunch and it comes down to paper for grad school vs. Zelda, I'm afraid I'll pick the latter.

Yeah, I'm in the process of applying for more grad school and looking for a job.

I was worried about that issue, so basically I had it pre-ordered for me for Christmas (you have to pre-order to get the gold Wiimote bundle), hence I will not be tempted to buy it on Nov. 20th, when I still have things to finish. I won't beg to receive it early until after my deadlines are passed, or I've beaten them.

Realistically, lacking a new toy has never prevented me from procrastinating in the past, but I'm making the effort.

My nine year old son is pretty stoked about this too. Don't know if he'll be getting it for Christmas though. Santa ain't that rich.

Oh man, that gold Wiimote is pretty bad-ass. Why did I have to read this thread? Maybe I can preorder, but have my wife hide it from me until the day after my capstone project is all signed off. :)

Like seriously, I had to order it from a different site because Amazon was sold out of the Wiimote bundle. That thing ain't gonna be available non-pre-ordered...

So I guess if you go back and forth on it for a week or so, the decision will be made for you!

Kotaku review

Sounds a little more motion-controlly than I'd prefer, and the reviewer shares my opinion that the series has become formulaic over the years, but the verdict is quite positive.

Strangely, between the stamina gauge, the equipment upgrades, and the apparent importance of player skill, it almost sounds like Demon's/Dark Souls-Lite.

Well, I happen to quite enjoy the formula, and many of the reviews say that the changes to the formula are significant enough to matter.

But a thought occurred to me, that it could address part of that problem in the same way that Metroid Prime 3 did - you don't have to acquire the morph ball, for example.

They could have a game where Link starts with a couple of the Zelda standbys (maybe not in his very starting inventory, but basically available at the start). I'm thinking about how in A Link to the Past, you got the boomerang about 5 minutes into the game, and after the introductory Hyrule Castle section, bombs were available at the shop (and the Ice Wand was available before the first dungeon, if you know where to find it). Or in Link's Awakening, bombs were also available as soon as you got your sword.

Of course, the boomerang in the 3D Zeldas is a bit better than in the other games, so maybe you shouldn't start with it (at least not if it has abilities like the Gust Boomerang or the multi-targeting boomerang in Wind Waker, altho getting a boomerang upgrade later wouldn't be a bad idea)... but certainly, starting with the ability to carry bombs and a bow could be interesting, in that it would allow other items to be acquired in the first dungeons, and make the puzzles more complicated from the start. If they really wanted to mix it up, you could start out with Link as an archer, and not get a sword immediately.

I decided against buying it. I understand the gold Wiimotes are still available. I'll wait until after Christmas to pick it up, just in case (though I doubt I'll get it).

Besides, I have Skyrim to distract me from schoolwork, and one distraction is enough!

After some Wii remote swordplay, flying on a Loftwing, and some Zelda dialogue - it really is awesome! Top notch.

Only about 50 hours. That's not that much, right?

I've still got a couple dungeons to go.

My wife bought it for me for Christmas. I haven't played it yet, though. I need to get more work done on my grad school research before I reward myself with the time sink that Skyward Sword is going to be.
