Coronavirus positive ... news
A thrad for positive news related to the pandemic. We need some.
Last Thursday at 8pm Britain had one of those totally spontaneous organised applause things, in support of the NHS and other care workers. A good reason for a marked dip in site traffic!

And now:
Astrophysicist gets magnets stuck up nose while inventing coronavirus device | Australia news | The Guardian
Quote:
Australian Dr Daniel Reardon ended up in hospital after inserting magnets in his nostrils while building a necklace that warns you when you touch your face

1) He was trying to do something useful
2) He's fine now
3) This is inherently funny.

Re: Coronavirus positive ... news
This little company makes hyperbaric hoods that can be used in some cases where a ventilator would otherwise be needed. They only cost a couple hundred bucks. They're swamped with orders. Virgin Galactic asked what the company needs to ramp up and the answer was more production machines. Virgin Galactic bought them some machines.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...virus-n1173466
Quote:
Austin said he recently got a surprised call from Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides offering to help him produce more devices.
"Chris, I saw what you do, and we want to help," Whitesides said, according to Austin. "Whatever it takes."
Austin told him he needed more machines to manufacture the devices but didn't have the cash to pay for them. Later that day, Austin got a call from his New Jersey-based supplier.
"Somebody just paid your bill," Austin said he was told. "They'll be shipping tomorrow."
With the four additional machines, Sea-Long expects to produce thousands of helmets a week. The goal is to produce 50,000 per week.

Other volunteers have been showing up offering to help.

Re: Coronavirus positive ... news
It's a little early to say (the stats of infected here are for some reason retroactively marked onto to the day the test was taken, so I have to keep going back and fixing the numbers from a day or two ago) - but it looks like Finland's curve has flattened.
They are even talking about going back to tracking the infection chains and thus maybe lightening the restrictions a little. I think it is premature, but it's just talk.

We're seeing now just how terrifying to an oligarch a general strike can be.

Something worth recording, and saving for our posterity. I suspect it might come in handy in the relatively near future.

COVID-19 Vaccine Candidate Shows Promise in First Peer-Reviewed Research | Pittwire | University of Pittsburgh
Quote:
“We had previous experience on SARS-CoV in 2003 and MERS-CoV in 2014. These two viruses, which are closely related to SARS-CoV-2, teach us that a particular protein, called a spike protein, is important for inducing immunity against the virus. We knew exactly where to fight this new virus,” said co-senior author Andrea Gambotto, associate professor of surgery at the Pitt School of Medicine. “That’s why it’s important to fund vaccine research. You never know where the next pandemic will come from.”

Re: Coronavirus positive ... news
The thing which is fucking killing me about all of this is how incredibly foreseeable and preventable it was. China gave us a pretty good head start all things considered. South Korea is controlling their outbreak with tools that should have been readily available to us.
So two weeks ago the Bay area was one of the harder hit areas. Dr Sara Cody issued the nation's first shelter in place order for Santa Clara county
Bend it like the Bay Area: Doctors see flatter curve after 2 weeks of social isolation
and we are flattening the curve. I am cautiously optimistic.
or I would be if the old Confederacy weren't fucking shit up as hard as they can.
