Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License

— A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

Neither Bardwell nor the couple immediately returned phone calls from The Associated Press. But Bardwell told the Daily Star of Hammond that he was not a racist.

"I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house," Bardwell said. "My main concern is for the children."

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves," Bardwell said. "In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer."

Per usual, I consulted the Free Republic thread to find out what the :ff:

liberals weren't telling me. I was disappointed to find only a limited racism. At first I was optimistic because of the idea that the real victim here is the Justice of the Peace, because he is from the South, and the media discriminates against people from the South, so why are people even talking about racism? Unfortunately, that line of discussion didn't really take off.

For those black Americans who are opposed to same sex marriage, I hope that they take this incident to heart. It wasn't that long ago when shit like this was par for the course and not at all newsworthy.

Good point, wei. So am I to understand that justices of the peace can just turn down anybody they want? I thought they had to dispense licenses to whomever applies as long as certain basic requirements (age, blood tests, whatever) were met.

The Huffington Post article is a tad confusing. In the first paragraph it states that the JP refused to issue the couple a marriage license. Later on in the article it states that he refused to sign their marrige license. My guess is that the couple already had the license, issued by the parish marriage license department/clerk of the court, and they wanted to get married by the Justice of the Peace. He refused. I don't know whether or not that is legally within his discretion.

Come on guys, stop being so hard on him, he is just doing it for the children. Just think how hard it would be to grow up a child of mixed race with no chance of succeeding. The only reason to get married is to have children.

I doubt they will. Most people think with a me first mentality so I doubt this incident will generate any moral outrage regardinh any issues other than race.

Huh, I thought we got married for the wedding gifts, but if your racist judge daddy doesn't like your mate, I suppose he's not buying you any.

Well that and our not-socialist government will give you all kinds of breaks if you get married.

Everyone is being too hard on this Judge, he even admitted he will let black people use his toilet, he's just a kind judge looking out for his negro friends. Besides, I'm sure the bible told him to do it.
