I've been unemployed for just over 3 months. Lots of interviews and even more phone screens, but so far I've been unable to convince anyone that I have any valuable skills. I had to borrow a little money from my sister to supplement the unemployment I'm receiving just to make the September mortgage (and bills) but I still have enough available credit to maintain my obesity for a while. I also have some very good prospects for a job offer in the coming days so !

Jamming your fist down a cougar's throat is one item in survival classes, although it's more recommended to beat it about the head with anything you have handy, even fists and especially eye gouging.

A cougar's 'killer move' is jumping on prey's back and snapping the neck with a bite. In an attack from the front, they'll try to suffocate prey by crushing the windpipe. (IIRC)

But more practically, being a bit louder than normal out in the woods, and traveling in pairs, is a deterrent to most potentially dangerous fauna. Bears don't want to interact with you, cougars are notoriously shy, wolves are unlikely to be interested (Or even seen) unless you're in the dead of winter and food is scarce.

Other tip: Use your telephoto lens. Do not approach deer/mountain goats/elk etc. They're most likely to flee, but if they think they can't, or are protecting young, they will beat your ass. (But not eat you.)

Having lived in mountain lion country, the general rule of thumb was if you can see the Mountain Lion, you're probably not about to get attacked, it's the lions you can't see who are the ones you have to worry about.

confirmed: at 38 years old I'm in the best fucking shape I've been since high school football.

5'8", 155 pounds, 8.8% body fat. I can do pull-ups again (which I discovered because I was being silly at work and did one on the side of an upholstery rack... once I realized I could do it, I did 4 more. Holy shit.)

I picked up and threw a 140 pound loveseat onto a rack because I didn't want to wait for the dingus who was using the lift, looking for a piece that was right in front of his face for a good five minutes.

There are times I hate my job, and there are times I love it. This is one of the latter.

Also, my little user title up there is a quote from a co worker. He's the jokester of the bunch, and he was like damn, 155? MORE LIKE 155 POUNDS OF ROCK HARD RAGE. I'm one of the oldest guys at our job and usually the most mellow, snickering when everyone else gets pissed off. This is the same motherfucker that played John Cena's entrance music one time when I walked through the gate a few weeks ago.

I start a new job on Tuesday. When asked "are you excited?" I don't know how to reply. I'm excited to start getting a paycheck again for sure. I'm also curious about how things will go and optimistic that I'll have a chance to learn and do new things. But all that being said it's hard to say I'm 'excited' about having a job. I mean, it's still a job.

I was told that this is a story worth telling so I will share it with you all. I met Alexis at the Wilton mall two years ago, when I was buying book 6 of the Malazan series, The Bonehunters. She asked me about the books and I told her they were amazing...

She shows up Thursday the 31st on the loading dock where I work, buying furniture. I loaded it into her little ass honda and she's just, out of nowhere like, "I remember you! Didn't you used to drive a cab?" and I got a better look at her face when she was right the hell in front of me. It took a good hot minute to click because I was in a really shitty mood that day. It was my tenth day in a row working, and I was in like, "fuck ALL these dumb ass customers" mode.

This happened at around 1:30, just a little bit after I got back from my lunch break. She waited for me in the parking lot until I got done with my shift at 4:30. We went and goofed off for a while, but she had to go back home. Had to take care of her mother. What I didn't know at the time is that Lexi's mother has terminal lung cancer. Father Helel, save us all, I've never felt like such an asshole as I did Thursday afternoon. I said something really fucking shitty, and I thought I'd ruined what could have become something special.

Thankfully I hadn't shoved my foot so far in my mouth that I was unable to pull it out without medical assistance. And she called me Friday morning, asking how I was doing and the next thing you know, she drives down from saratoga and we spent the whole day together.

I think I love her.
