Default Character stripping "s="

I want to embed a hotlinked image using the [img] tags, but I'm not getting the image to appear and although this may ultimately be down to the host server nixing the deal, the immediate cause seems to be that an essential part of the URL string is being stripped out from between the tags at the :ff: vBulletin end.

The URL to The Guardian's photo of Bernie Sanders should end with the string s= e3c44b32740ca0781e3e99c2da55851f (with no space after the '=') .

However I try to include that string in my post*, when I click [submit] vBulletin strips it out and (unsurprisingly) The Guardian doesn't accept the request without what is presumably a security code of some kind.

* even within code tags:
Code:
https://i.guim.co.uk/img/static/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2011/10/21/1319212940701/Vermont-senator-Bernie-Sa-007.jpg?w=620&q=85&auto=format&sharp=10&
Have we been haxored by them moozelums?

s=e3c44b32740ca0781e3e99c2da55851f

:^: Further experiments reveal that the string is not stripped out if it is the first in the post.

Nor is it stripped out if the code is reduced to 31 bytes: s=e3c44b32740ca0781e3e99c2da55851

In my experience, you can take out anything from the ? on in an address like that and it will still work. I tried to test it but it came back unauthorized even when I used your whole URL.

It might be that the forum software doesn't allow long strings of characters without spaces, so it inserts a space every so often to break long strings.

Testing to see how long strings can be (originally no spaces in this run of digits): 12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 1234567890

Edit: looks like 50 is the limit.

In a URL like the one you had, even when you can't leave off the parameters as Janet suggested, you can still insert spaces immediately before any ? or & characters as a work-around.

But in this case, as Janet says, hot-linking the image is not allowed: even when I paste the corrected string direct into my browser's address bar, I just get some text that says, 'Unauthorized'.

Hmm. It's not just the 50 character limit (which we've come across before). Whatever else I strip out of the URL, the s=6c81c35357ff053b615124ff54ecdef1 string is always removed - with bbcode img tags and with html img tags.

And even in plain text. I had to split it to get it to show up in that sentence.

That may be because the string mick posted is truncated. I can see the image at this address in a new tab
htt ps://i.guim.c o.uk/img/media/aae2473655467cb54b0fe104833d3eded007e6d2/0_94_2000_1200/master/2000.jpg?
w=620&q=85&auto=format&sharp=10&s= 6c81c35357ff 053b615124f f54ecdef1
(remove all the spaces).

Something dodgy is afoot. I blame the NSA.
