My Year in Meals
My New Year's resolution was to photograph every meal I eat in 2011 and write a little bit about where it came from and why I chose it. To that end I started a blog which I'm calling My Year in Meals, and this project is already forcing me to confront my dietary laziness and re-examine certain assumptions I had made about what I eat.
For science!

Re: My Year in Meals
Great idea for a blog VM,a wonderful way to keep yourself accountable and it shares your knowlege and journey with the rest of us. I have contemplated a food diary as well as my tongue in cheek chopstick diet to watch what I eat.
I want that rice pilaf recipe.
Oh and I fried eggs too, but have you tried poaching? It's healthier for an eggwich and the same texture.

For the last few months I've been getting eggs from one of the managers where I work. She and her husband have taken to raising chickens, so I know they're being fed and treated well. When I can't get eggs from them I get them at the co-op who in turn gets them from a local farm called Vital Farms.

I love the dedication. Seriously it's pretty inspiring.

Great idea vm! I've always meant to do something similar, but with photographs of the sunrise.
Shit, it's the ninth already? Maybe next year...

I only use evoo spray on a non-stick pan to fry, so not too unhealthy. I like poached but I don't think I have the patience or attentiveness in the morning. Maybe I'm doing it wrong...

Re: My Year in Meals
That sounds pretty healthy. Contra is the eggman in our house, bit he has perfected poaching and taught me.
Just boil a pan of water, with a tsp of vinegar, flavored vinegar like terragon is fantastic for this. Carefully break the eggs into the water and they will form little blobs. Cook for two minutes and scoop out with a slotted spoon. Clean up is a snap too.
Though I must say, your eggwiches are pretty as a picture so if it isn't broke don't fix it.

Re: My Year in Meals
day 7........chicken fried steak ????
I had to look up what chicken fried steak was. it looks kind of like the pork schnitzel I make, but from the recipes i saw the chicken fried steak is breaded a bit differently.
I only use pork tenderloin for it. roughly 1 inch cross grain cuts of tenderloin pounded flat, floured, egged, bread crumbed, and then pan fried. I usually add a bit of seasoning salt into the bread crumbs.
only thing i ever put on top of it is a bit of horse radish.

Re: My Year in Meals
Fucking yankees. I remember one day a big group of us go out after church to a Bob Evans. I decide on what I want and when I order I ask for the chicken fried steak (having only just read the menu and knowing that it specifically called it a country fried steak). Everyone at the table looks at me and laughs.
Fuckers.

Re: My Year in Meals
Nobody 'round here knows what Bob Evans is. Closest thing I've found that people know about is Mimi's Cafe, which as it turns out is a division of Bob Evans.

Re: My Year in Meals
Hey vm, I know you are early on in this, but I was wondering if you are at all considering doing some sort of book about conscience food consumption or something based on your experiences and what you learned in the process? I think you should. Seems like the next logical step. Then I could watch you on BookTV and stalk you on Twitter.

I hadn't really thought about that but it's not a bad idea. I'll send you a copy if I do.

Re: My Year in Meals
Inspired by your and other foodie blogs, I photoed my food for one whole day. It was kind of a pain in the ass. I (re)commend your commitment, vm.
