Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas

It ranks up there for me as well. I believe that I own the entire collection of Dylan Thomas works.

My favorite line ever is from Dylan Thomas' Fern Hill:
Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

Much like this thread, it talks about the inevitability of death, despite how hard one may fight it.

I have a complete works of Dylan Thomas. In Storage. Along with all of my books. In Atlanta. Which is 1600 miles from here. :(

I sometimes have trouble figuring out what he's trying to say, but for sheer breathtaking imagery he's one of the very best.

Not a chance.

BTW, since this thread has morphed ino a MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RANGER... wait, no it hasn't. Its morphed into a poetry appreciation thread - I have to add that

A ) I'm drunk, and

B ) I have a hard time deciding whether Dylan Thomas is the best every, or the wry political satire of Dryden is betterer:

Quote:
In pious times, ere priestcraft did begin,
Before polygamy was made a sin;
When man on many multiplied his kind,
Ere one to one was cursedly confined;
When nature prompted and no law denied
Promiscuous use of concubine and bride;
Then Israel's monarch after Heaven's own heart,
His vigorous warmth did variously impart
To wives and slave; and, wide as his command,
Scattered his Maker's image through the land.

I agree. Sorry about your books. :(

Here's one that always sticks around for good reason as well--

Ozymandias
By Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land,

Who said--"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart....Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Just like the remains of this thread will one day be lost among the vast wasteland of the internet...

But you must agree that Monty Python beats all with his many poems and lyrics like:

"Every Sperm Is Sacred"
There are Jews in the world, there are Buddists,
There are Hindus and Mormons and then
There are those that follow Mohammad, but
I've never been one of them.

I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.

You don't have to be a six footer,
You don't have to have a great brain,
You don't have to have any clothes on,
You're a Catholic the moment Dad came, because

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Let the heathen spill theirs,
On the dusty ground,
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.

Every sperm is wanted,
Every sperm is good,
Every sperm is needed,
In your neighborhood.

Hindu, Taoist, Morman,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is good,
Every sperm is needed,
In your neighborhood.

Every sperm is useful,
Every sperm is fine,
God needs everybody's,
Mine, and mine, and mine.

Let the pagans spill theirs,
O'er mountain, hill and plain.
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is good,
Every sperm is needed,
In your neighborhood.

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great,
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

AND

"Sit on my Face" from "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl"

Sit on my face, and tell me that you love me.
I'll sit on your face and tell you I love you, too.
I love to hear you moralize,
When I'm between your thighs;
You blow me away!

Sit on my face and let my lips embrace you.
I'll sit on your face and let my love be truly.
Life can be fine if we both sixty-nine,
And we'll sit on our faces in all sorts of places and play,
'Till we're blown away!

Monty Python does, indeed, beat all; Although I have to add that, since there us no individual that is called "Mothy Python", the pronoun "he" is inappropriate. Monty Python is a team of people rather than a single "he".

I will say that John Cleese and Eric Idle are brilliant.Have you heard the FCC Song , Eric Idle's (a naturalised US citizen) response to the ruling against Howard Stern?

I hope so!

I need a place for those pop-into-the-head sorts of thoughts. Will this help? I don't have the real thing, but I thought this was cute, nonetheless:

Yeah, in fact, that's where I got the image. I saw it in the snail mail catalog and thought it might be good for an avatar, so dialed up the item number in the online catalog. Unfortunately, it was a while back and I don't have a clue which catalog! I'll think about it today and see if I can remember; it's most likely one out of less than ten with those sorts of items.

Pesci, your fowl is rather like some wrought-iron guinea-fowls I (and my sister) got for my mother. Working with scrap (I assume) metal, and wire, is a popular craft form down here. I don't have a photo of the guineafowls but I might see if I can take one. (You don't get catalogues. They sell them beside the road.)
