Peanut butter and bacon on cinnamon swirl toast sammiches.

Y'know, I know you were being rhetorical but that's a good question. Why have we evolved to love the taste of things that are so bad for us?
|
Because they're good for us in the context they were designed to be. We're supposed to be running around catching and eating our meat in relatively small quantities, not buying big gobs of it at the grocery store and eating it in front of the TV.

Baloney! My ancestors killed woolly mammoths and ate them in one sitting. Rabbits, schmabbits.

Yeah, what she said. In order to get the most fuel for the least effort, our ancestors had to eat calorie-dense foods like fat and sugar and starch. Those who naturally craved salads starved themselves out of the gene pool eons ago.
It doesn't matter that it will make us drop dead of a heart attack when we reach middle-age. It's the child-bearing years that matter in evolution. Once you've had a few offspring and passed along that junk-food-craving gene, you can feel free to die of anything and it won't affect evolution.

Re: What are your favorite very-bad-for-you foods?
Lay's potato chips with California Dip. (That's the kind you make by mixing onion soup mix and sour cream.) Ruffles will not do.
Eggs benedict.
Bacon. As much as possible, please.
Tacos from the taco truck. I have no idea what kind of animal gave its life so that I could have those tacos. The gallons of orange grease dripping down my elbows would seem to indicate that the animal was rather lean, requiring several ladelfuls of melted lard to be dumped upon it before it became sufficiently unctuous. I am also not sure that the taco guys have ever washed their hands. I don't care.

Have you seen Mexican cattle? Pretty lean, the ones I've seen. They must buy lard by the drum-full from American suppliers like IBP and Hormel.

Yeah, well...
If we're going to add more, I gotta add cheesecake (especially mocha cheesecake) and corndogs.

Re: What are your favorite very-bad-for-you foods?
OMG, I go to the Tulsa State Fair just for the bad food: Deep-fried Oreos, corndogs, cheese sticks, funnel cakes, roasted cinnamon almonds, and roasted corn on the cob (I gues that one's not so bad). If I ate all year like that one day at the fair, I'd weigh a thousand pounds by now.

Speaking of lard, has anyone else noticed how much fast food french fries suck now that they're fried in *gack* vegetable oil?

The replies to this so far (see, I have read them) focus on the fatty/sugary aspect. But what about the things that have evolved to be bad for us? Why do we love them? I refer to chillies, and to a lesser extent mustard, peppercorns, watercress, (horse)radish, tobacco - all those plants evolved their active ingredients to fend off predators. And we love them (except tobacco, yuk). How come?

I'd probably end up convulsing if I ate this stuff. Deep fried oreos? Ack!
The cinnamon almonds are good for me, I'm convinced because I can scarf them down and not feel all icky afterward. I go to the local flea market sometimes to get a paper cone full.

Those really are good questions, and now I am stumped. But here comes a little stream-of-consciousness wild-ass guessing, just for fun:
1 - I thought that animals eating fruit was good for plants. The animals would spit or poop the seeds and spread around the species. Wouldn't that account for the chiles at least?
2 - Animals who enjoyed eating the high-defense plants were less likely starve to death when food was scarce and that was all they had. It was us against them, after all. This one doesn't bode well with me, because most of the things you mentioned have little or no calories (fuel).
They're great for dieters, though. They add much-needed taste and flavor to low-calorie foods.
Yes? No? Maybe?

Re: What are your favorite very-bad-for-you foods?
1 - Birds are unaffected by peppers. Cayenne pepper is often used to keep squirrels from eating birdseed, but the birds just gobble it up without notice.

Then you'd love the cooking in my family. Homemade (or home-cured) bacon and sausage, handmade biscuits - no measuring, and fresh churned butter.
Oh, and eggs gathered 30 minutes ago. Fryin' in the skillet.
God I love country breakfasts.

Red Robin guacamole burgers
Tater tots
Buttered mushrooms and fried onions
fried green tomatoes
old-fashioned movie show popcorn with real butter and salt
buttered corn on the cob - what a mess!
PECAN PIE! PECAN PIE! PECAN MOTHERFUCKING PIE!

I've noticed. The fries actually used to be cooked, now they seem to be an undercooked soggy mess.

Exactly. The chillies want to be eaten by birds and pooped out over a wide area, but they don't want mammals chomping them. I imagine small mammals would chew the seeds right up.

Sluggo LOVES hot peppers. He'll eat the peppers themselves, hot sauce, pretty much anything. He's got some pretty unusual preferences for a dog, so I dunno what to make of it. I haven't known any other dogs who'd eat the stuff, but Sluggo's just crazy for spicy. I limit his intake, but I bet he'd eat jalapenos or something all day if I'd let him.
