How to cook hot dogs... with electricity!

More with plenty of pictures at link.

... *Still* making sure that the other end of the cord isn't plugged in, clip the alligators to a couple of forks that you don't mind losing. Put them on a nonconductive plate, and go get out the hot dogs. ...

... If you're *not* going to eat the hot dog, a neat trick is to stick a bunch of standard LEDs into it. (Yes, this really works!) Apparently the voltage between nearby points on the hot dog is fairly low, since the LEDs don't seem to burn out. ...

I don't quite get this part. Do the LEDs ruin the meat or something? Why can't you take them out after the cooking is done?

1) Purchase microwave
2) Plug in microwave so it has access to electricity
3) Nuke hotdogs

I remember seeing a microwave oven for the first time, at Joe's Appliance Store back in about 1970. I ate my first microwaved hotdog, cooked in only *gasp* one minute there. Mmmm, gotta love those lips and assholes.

I'm guessing the LEDs leave a similar residue to the forks, hence the inedibility.

The pins might be solder-plated, i.e. tin/lead. Quite a few things in electronics are lead-free now but unless you order the LEDs specifically it can be hard to tell.

I'd wonder if the LEDs are actually overheating. You can see they've got red, green, yellow, blue, and orange ones all going at once even though they take quite different voltages -- the red ones start going at a volt and a half while the blue ones take five. Some must be being overloaded. But they're tough. If it's just a few minutes they'll probably be fine when they cool down.

If the LEDs are made in China there's no telling if they're lead-free or not. I like my hotdogs lead-free too.

So you can use them again for other projects, such as bratwurst? :P

Well, if they've not been soldered before, they might not have any lead on them. But who knows what other contaminants might be on them. It might just be carbon deposits in the hot dog, but who really wants to take the chance?
