Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
I'd been avoiding posting about the Flint emergency manager because, damnit!, I'm paying that ridiculous salary and I don't want to think about it. At 5:00pm on the day we were voting for a mayor, Snyder announced that our votes were pointless. Thanks a lot, bastard governor. Detroit is next on his hit list, so I'm hearing. They have entered the review process now.

Actually, you could change your ideology 180 degrees overnight, and your posts still wouldn't get much appreciation. Because you'd still be a fucking idiot.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
Bumping this ancient thread to say that things just got interesting here. A judge issued a restraining order against Flint's emergency manager over the weekend. Today she voided everything he's done in the last four months and reinstated the Mayor. Still not sure how this is going to affect day to day life here, but it sure isn't boring.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
The Michigan Supreme Court ruled today that a proposed referendum to repeal the emergency manager law does indeed get to go on the November ballot. Some fake grassroots but real wingnut group objected to the referendum on account of the type size. One Republican voted with the Court's three Democrats, which generated a 4-3 majority in favor letting the referendum go to the voters.
The opinions are here if anyone's interested. I ain't readin' that shit.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
Sadly for me, the injunction does not take existing emergency managers out of power. So I'm still stick with Flint's manager who is determined to pick my pocket to give breaks to businesses. I'm not going to detail everything he's done because this is not the rant thread. Suffice it to say I want the hell out of this town so much I'm almost hoping Consumers Energy will accidentally blow up my house while they are replacing the gas main in front of it so I can take the insurance money and split.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
It appears I was wrong. The injunction does effect us. Once the injunction started the old emergency manager act went into effect. The old version said that no one who has been employed by the affected government within 5 years is eligible to be the emergency manager. Michael Brown was acting mayor after the felonious yahoo Don Williamson resigned to rob us of the chance to recall him. That makes him ineligible. So now we have Ed Kurtz, who was the emergency manager when Williamson was mayor.
I don't know if this effects the standing of Michael Brown's orders or not. Since I haven't yet been charged a fee for trash instead of a millage, nor has the special assessment for street lights been collected, they may or may not still stand. Such a joy this town is.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
In breaking news, the Republican-dominated Legislature is rushing through "Right to Work" legislation during the lame duck session. And just to make sure that the citizens can't do anything about it, they've attached an appropriations bill, which means that it cannot be overturned by a voter referendum.
From the moment he was elected, Governor Snyder has insisted that he had no interest in signing such a bill. Now he's saying that he will sign the bill just as soon as it reaches his desk.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
Yeah, I've been too disheartened to post about that. It was signed about 20 minutes ago according to Michigan Radio. I think the lesson of 2012 is that you can't buy a presidential election, but states are still up for grabs.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
It's really disgusting, because right up until recently, Snyder had been insisting in interviews that Right-to-Work is "too divisive" and is "inappropriate" for Michigan. Methinks Snyder was lying when he claimed to have "no interest" in signing Right-to-Work into law.
My main objection isn't so much with the law itself, but with the underhanded way that it's being implemented, and with the fact that the legislature deliberately added an appropriations measure -- apparently in order to ensure that it can't be overturned by a voter referendum.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Actually, I was sure it would be without even looking.
So, I serve on the American Library Association, RUSA/AFL-CIO Joint Committee on Library Services to Union Members. At the end of January will be the first time I physically attend a meeting and I'm not sure how I'm going to face those people. On the other hand, the work will be more important than ever.

The Flint Journal decided the news wasn't depressing enough on its own, so it added a human interest story. Flint Sit-Downer Witnesses Michigan Become Right to Work State

On a totally unrelated note, what is the inside story on the FBI raid on the Detroit City Library?

Don't know for sure. They are going after the financial director for kickbacks on no-bid contracts is what I hear. They also raided his home the same day.

Re: MI just beat out WI for Kochsuckery
Remember how the Capitol Building was locked while the "Right to Work" vote was taking place? Remember how this was supposedly done not to ensure that members of the riffraff general public were excluded from the legislative process, but because the building was already filled to capacity?
Today, one of my colleagues told me that he had actually been in the building at the time it was locked up. He was there as part of a pre-arranged tour with his daughter's elementary-school class.
He insists that -- far from being filled to capacity -- the building was all but deserted at the time.

According to Bloomberg, now that Detroit has an EM, half of Michigan's Black population has lost electoral power. But, you know, it's not about race.
