Anyone watching season 2 of True Detective? I'm wondering if it's worth watching, I've heard mixed things and wondered what the :ff:'ers thought :)

I am watching season 2.

I've read some reviews of it and I have to say that I generally disagree with the negative reviews that I read.

The show is slow moving but so was season 1. All the actors are crushing it. I don't think it is as good as season 1, but that's an insanely high bar.

I think season 2 misses the multiple different time frames setup that season 1 had. It is a more linear story thus far, but still really good.

I like what they have done with the characters so far throughput the season. It's definitely worth watching.

Thanks bey! Sounds like I'll enjoy it so I'm diving in now :)

Season 1 was pretty fucking awesome in my opinion, the acting and production was top notch, like watching 8 1 hour movies. Not to mention the storyline which was just as quality. I agree with bey - a very high bar set there. I'd be happy if season 2 was even 75% as good.

I'm rewatching season 1 with JD. I am really enjoying it. As I watch it, with season 2 in mind. I really think the differing time frames helped season 1.

I am hopeful that we will get to see more character development as season 2 goes on. The character development was obvious from the beginning of season 1.

So far, my feelings about the characters in season q have changed as events occurred and thoughts were explored.

I finished season 1 and I have seen the first episode of season 2.

I love season 2 already, but I am biased. First is because, for reasons I don't entirely understand, I love Vince Vaughn in absolutely everything I see him in. Second, it's set in Los Angeles*, which, come on.

bey told me it was set in California, but he couldn't remember whether it was LA specifically, so I was looking forward to discovering that on my own. About four seconds into the opening credits, there's an arial shot of Newhall Pass which made me punch the couch and crow, "Those are my mountains, motherfucker! That's my fucking hood!"

I have read some shit about a show or movie's setting being a "character" on the show, and they were probably talking about New York City or somewhere, but it has been rattling around in my brain the last day or so since I watched the ep. Then today I read this on AV club about the season 1 finale:

So I'm excited about LA being the third lead this season. The bayou is fun, but I love the city.

*:openquote:Vinci:closequote:, though? WHY!

Also, so far, the dialog does not disappoint. The stuff that Colin Farrel yells at the kid that bullied his kid is priceless. One other part, too, but I can't remember what.

I've made a list of a few shows that I might start watching and I would love any ideas on any of them from anyone who has been watching them. Some just started this fall, some have been going for a year or longer already:

Scream Queens
Quantico
Marvel's Jessica Jones (I guess this hasn't even started actually)
Empire
American Horror Story
Fargo
Master of None (oops this one hasn't started either!)

Some I'll be continuing to watch or have started already:

Homeland - Last season was a return to form. If you've never seen it the first 2 seasons are gripping and high quality.

Limitless - I thought the movie was 'ok' and liked the premise at least. The first 2 episodes are not rising above 'ok' but I'll likely keep watching. It has the potential to be very interesting or to descend into a really cheesy procedural.

Agents of Shield - I just can't stop watching it

Flash - First season was really good, hope they can keep it up

Goldbergs - As a child of the 80's I love the nostalgia and it's regularly funny and endearing

Haven - lets face it, it's shite. But it's familiar shite and occasionally almost worth it

Dr Ken - first episode was pretty cringe worthy, but I really like Dave Foley and I hope it gets better and much less formulaic-laugh-track-sitcom.

Shows I'm anxiously waiting to start again :twiddle:
Agent Carter
Better Call Saul
Daredevil

I discovered that one of the network channels (we got rid of cable) carries vintage games shows, so I wanted Celebrity Bowling and What's My Line last night. The bowling was oddly relaxing.

Then I switched over to Star Trek (TOS - Charlie X)

That looks like a full schedule but I recommend:

ABC
blackish - Sitcom about a modern black family, living life and raising children. I don't care what CBS tries to tell you about its comedies, this is one to watch. Consistently hilarious.

Fresh Off the Boat - Sitcom about a Chinese family in the mid-90s. Not as consistently funny as blackish, but still funny.

FOX
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Kind of a Barney Miller for the modern viewer. I had misgivings with Samberg as the lead character. He surrounded himself with some talented. It's the ensemble that is assembled that makes this comedy really work. (Notable costars Terry Crews and Andre Braugher.)

NBC
I'm watching the Blindspot starring Jamie Alexander (Sif in the MCU). I haven't formed an opinion on it yet. It's there if you have room.

CBS
Supergirl premieres some time this month. I'm hoping it's as much fun as the Flash. It's the same producer (shared with Arrow and Flash), so he has experience and knows the material.

With the exception of Supergirl, everything else has already started but are only a couple of episodes into their new seasons.

My beloved NCIS, and its spinoff New Orleans. Doctor Who and Supernatural, of course.

Quantico might be interesting, I'll give it a look.

I have lost the ability to watch shows as they're aired, but the first three seasons of American Horror Story were good, and each season is self-contained, so you can watch them in whatever order you want.

And I was super-worried about Fargo, but it was excellent and I recommend that too.

One recommendation to add: We get this really weird over the air channel that is almost always showing Fantasy Island. It's too stupid to actually watch, obviously, but it's funny to put it on when you hear someone coming, so they walk in and you pretend to be all embarrassed and fumble around to change the channel, so they think you're just always sneakily watching Fantasy Island when they're not looking.

Yeah, Heroes: Reborn. It has HRG and Hiro is supposed to show up in the next episode. Weird stuff about entering a video game. Some of the new characters are interesting so far.

We are watching The Leftovers on HBO. I think it's pretty good, not the best thing on TV or even on HBO, but we have a good time watching it. Mostly we just laugh and groan at how badly the people just cannot catch a break, and shout along and heckle MST3K-style.

I was watching Mr Robot and completely enthralled by it, but then USA had to be a little bitch and switch the On Demand offering from free to 3 bucks an episode. :dawkins:

What kind of hobo-ass on demand system are you running out there? Here in Verizon FiOSlandia, there's no extra charge.

Also, it looks like it's free on the Hulu (as in, not Hulu+).

That makes it double extra :dawkins: on whatever system you gots.

It's not on Hulu. It only looks like it's on Hulu because it was on Hulu when it was free On Demand (Comcast, btw). If you try to watch an episode, it'll tell you USA has chosen not to stream it there at the moment.

All this stuff is readily available on torrents if you want to watch it for free.

I don't know if it's a moral issue or what, but whenever I see people annoyed that they can't watch something I wonder why they don't torrent it. I'm not saying there isn't perfectly good reasons why, I just wonder is all.

I've never torrented anything and it seems mysterious to me. Besides, I prefer to watch things on the big TV rather than on the small laptop screen.

Not only do I worry about the FBI busting into my home to arrest me for being the low life criminal scum I am. I'm also afraid a torrent will do something irreparable to my computer.

Nobody tell liv that it's easy to torrent and easy to play stuff you've downloaded on big TV screens.
