Cluttered or Clean?
Having had to work on other people's computers (esp. recently), I notice that I'm not as fond of icons on the desktop as many people. In my Windows setup, I use quicklaunch and have two icons; Recycle Bin and a folder shortcut. Here in my Ubuntu setup I have pretty much the same thing. So, are you a neat freak or did someone puke on your monitor?
By the way, I really like how the FF theme goes with my desktop (you can imagine):
(I was going to post the whole picture but I know it might dork with some folks' browser)

Oo! Pretty! I'm a spartan desktop kind of girl myself, although I have the 4 default XP folders on mine (My Docs, My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin).

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
Next time I boot into Windows I'll post that desktop. It has a weird Scottish landscape as a background right now. Your's is very purty, Liv.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
I disabled desktop icons and just use the quick launch bar.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
I tend towards a fairly clean desktop, but my working folders are horrible.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
My desktop is cluttered with icons like my desk is cluttered with books.
It's a neatly arranged clutter though. Does that count for something?

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
I basically ignore my desktop. Which means it was totally clean until I upgraded Firefox recently, which caused it to start saving everything to desktop. It is now a royal mess.
Incidentally, I have discovered that KDE lets you put your recycling bin in your recycling bin. It vanishes.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
I love having stuff on my desktop, but just tidied it about a week ago, so I don't yet have files and stuff on it.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
I tidy my desktop when it's completely full of icons. I then normally reorganize so that it's only 50% full.
I can see why people might like a fairly clean look, but the desktop is there to put icons on - why not use it for what it was designed for?

The desktop is there 'cause that's where you look at stuff... like programs. I use quicklaunch as the handfull of programs it contains accounts for nearly 100% of the programs I start. Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily knocking icons on the desktop -- until it gets out of hand. Especially once it gets to the point of being full of stuff you don't remember what it was.

You probably know that you can change that but, just in case; Under Tools -> Options (Or Edit -> Preferences for Linux) go to the downloads section. You should have an option to either prompt every time for the location of the download or you can set the default dowload folder. By default it is 'Desktop' but I always change mine to something like a 'Temp' folder somewere.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
My desktop has all the icons invisible. I added a toolbar for the desktop onto the task bar at the bottom.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
So, I'm the only person who uses "start, run" or "start, all programs"? I just don't like using the desktop. Never have. I have no reason for it either.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
If I have a lot of icons on my desktop at any given time it's only because I put them there (or allowed them to get put there) carelessly. I use a two level task bar at the bottom with quick launch on top (apps on the left, common folders on the right) and minimized applications along the bottom.

I find that method annoying as I frequently can't find the program am looking or, of if I do, I often have to go through too many sub-levels to find the "run". I also usually also have the documents I use a lot on the desktop, either directly or in folders.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
I don't have any icons on this desktop. I have I think one on my other one, which is just a shortcut to my active work files. So my desktop is usually pretty empty.
Like seebs, though, my files are a mess.
In fact, I'm a horrible, terrible slob in absolutely every other aspect of my life.

Re: Cluttered or Clean?
Oh. I guess I should have posted a screenshot of my nice, clean desktop. No icons, see. Just a nice, clean user interface.
I have pretended my name is "Andy" in this picture so as to foil identity thieves, in case anybody is wondering about that.

J.T. I hope the thumbnails of each of the characters are clickable. I think each one should produce a gallery montage of the character's best scenes.
We need the one with Mal, sitting nekkie in the middle of the desert saying, "That went well." and meaning it.

Jeez, me too. I have no frigging idea where anything is, and this is a pretty new machine, even. Thank heaven for command-F.
