I opened the discussion with my advisor by saying I have a lucrative career in a field I enjoy and that I am primarily taking classes to learn, but that I don't want to be dumb about it--I want to make sure I'm taking classes that will lead toward a 2 year degree and/or be applicable to a BA program if I should decide to continue on. She replied by telling me that such-and-such program was 'hot' and that I could make good money if I went that route. We went back and forth like that several times :mutter:

but eventually I gleaned that I'm well on the way (with some minor adjustments) to getting an AA in Philosophy and that in so doing I will have completed the requirements to transfer to a BA program. So that's my new goal in life: to get a 2 year philosophy degree.

I KNOW I KNOW I WON'T QUIT MY DAY JOB.

Wishing you well, vm. I'm sure you can talk the talk and get the paper but from what I've seen here, I doubt you are honest enough to walk the philosopher's walk.

LOL You fulfilling your desire to call me a douchebag doesn't actually address the issue of the importance of honesty in viscousmemories's capacity as a philosopher. But you have to be something of a philosopher to see that, and even more of a philosopher to acknowledge it, I think.

Only the most honest philosophers take the Socratic injunction to "know thyself" to the most thoroughgoing and frankly penetrative levels of literalness.

You can tell these philosophers at a glance by whether they walk (what has become known as) the philosophers' walk. My understanding is that the discomfort, and hence the concomitantly tentative walking style, eventually subside.

For my part, I am simply not that honest. Fortunately I was able to turn pro before some online dipshit revealed this shameful secret to the world.
