DC has a grid, but then it interrupts it with circles and diagonals, just enough to confuse you. Also it resets the count, so there are two A Streets and two 1st Streets, etc.

Pittsburgh is too hilly and irregularly shaped for a grid to last very long anywhere, but it does have various sections that are grids. They also tried to do some numbered streets, so you can infer the direction of a numbered street or avenue if you find one of the other ones. But they're not present everywhere and most streets have regular names.

You guys! I found Nambia! I was looking at a map of Botswana (for reasons of No1 Ladies Detective Agency) from the Perry-Castaņeda collection and tada!

Did you know it's about the same time to drive from Johannesburg to Gaborone as it is to fly? Assuming a reasonable distance from the airports at either end, and the same distribution of chaos at the airports vs at the border crossing and the little dorps along the way.

I did not know that.

The capital is ridiculously close to the border though. Militarily speaking that is very wrong. :guardchicken:

Also: that's dorpEN. :teacher:

I did a 3-week project in Gaborone while living in Joburg. Flying is quicker in the morning, but each airline (I think there were two options) basically has one aeroplane that shuttles back and forth during the day, so delays of close to 2 hours (on a 40 minute flight) can build up by early evening. When I drove I had to wait an hour at the border until they realised this dumb Engelsman wasn't going to give them a bribe, and go quite slowly through the towns full of goats, cattle and donkeys (on the South African side. Botswana side is better organised, and, as you point out, not much distance from the border).

Also: dorp is a word adopted into South African English, and the plural is dorps.

A video map!

Tracks Saharan dust, ocean salt and forest fire smoke blown around from August to October this year.

It's good full screen. And you don't really need the audio although some of the commentary is mildly interesting.

Europeans pay attention at 10-20 October!

Dutch satirical mag de Speld has 'Continental Realignment' map.

Finse meren = Finnish lakes
Azië-Giessendam: Giessendam is a tiny town
Bloed op Zand = Blood on Sand (there's a Dutch town called Loon op Zand)
Zuid/Noord = South/North

I love how North Antarctica is all around South Antarctica.

This world map has every country in its own language (though only Dutch for Belgium and only German for Switzerland, so probably only the largest language group).

I don't know why people are so critical of United States citizens calling themselves American, the country is the only one with America in its name.

I like your thinking. Only citizens of the Central African Republic or South Africa should call themselves African.

OK now this is fun. While also being a massive invasion of privacy and leak of military secrets. Allegedly.

Heheh Strava is apparently quite good at showing you alt routes to Ingress portals, which may or may not get you shot if you try that shit in a restricted area... Hello military, how you doin'?

And, noticing the Finnish flag in there, I looked up Yttrium (discovered by Johan Gadolin at the university of Turku, when Finland was part of Sweden anyway).

Ytterby, a village in Sweden, has four elements named after it: yttrium, ytterbium, terbium and erbium. No really. They obviously ran out of ways to create variants of the name.

Three other elements also have their discoveries connected to Ytterby quarry: holmium (for Stockholm), thulium (for Thule), and gadolinium (for the above Mr Gadolin).
