Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
Yep. The goals of the Common Core initiative, even for Kindergarten, are ambitious, lofty, perhaps even unattainable. Kiddo's class works non-stop, they don't even have recess this year. These are second graders, and some of them can barely read let alone " Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.". The focus on testing for NCLB is kind of gone, now the focus is on finishing the curriculum no matter what.
I was all for the CCI, I think those goals are good ones to work towards(not necessarily reach), however it is being implemented in a fucked up manner.
Working towards a goal is good...dragging every one to the finish line, dead or alive, is bad.

It turns out that every public school kindergartner in Oregon was given a kindergarten readiness test last September to see how many numbers, letters and sounds they knew. The Oregonian reported that kids on average entered kindergarten knowing 19 capital and lower-case letters and seven letter sounds of at least 100 possible correct answers.
Kindergarten readiness tests are nothing new. What is is the ever-increasing focus on turning kindergarten, and now preschool, into academic environments with the aim of ensuring that children can read by the time they are in first grade. In fact, kindergarten is the new first grade when it comes to academics.http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ndergarteners/

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
Could be worse, South Korean students study 16 more hours per week than the international average, learning by rote, with far more emphasis on the annual aptitude tests. Korean kids start kindergarten at age 3.

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
Could be better too. The Finnish system provides an excellent education by all measures, yet is kid friendly. Plenty of playtime, balanced focus on humanities and STEM, relaxing homey environments, etc.

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
BTW, for those who wonder how I can leave Kiddo in that system...the kid thrives on it. I don't like it or understand it, but the environment suits him. I have to parent the kid I have, and that sometimes requires me to accept things I don't like or understand...even when it makes me want to tear my skin off.
Hubby and I were hand selected to meet with the principal tomorrow night to help form a parents advisory board (they disbanded the PTA or some shit, I dunno yet). I may not have a tongue Tuesday. We'll see how bad it is.

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
One thing to note about some other school systems is that they don't have to deal with English orthography... Finnish and Korean have very consistent alphabets. Italian and Spanish are also quite consistent. They spend significantly less time teaching kids to read as a result. So in the early years especially I'd expect them to be ahead on literacy and skills that depend on it, and with less effort.

Oh I like the quote on that page:"Science and technology aspire to clean, clear answers to problems (as elusive as those answers may be). The humanities address ambiguity, doubt, and skepticism - essential underpinnings in a complex, diverse and turbulent world." - Dr. Alan Brinkley

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
I'm a big supporter of adding the A, and not just because STEAM sounds better than Stem.
In part because there's often this divide between science and art, when science is often so beautiful it's used in art, why not let the most complex intelligence we know of out to play, stuff some beautiful science into it and see if some science doesn't come back. Listening to some of the great scientific minds talk on YouTube you can often hear how they talk about science as if it was some art form, people are even skewed by the very idea of finding a more "beautiful" math equation. All broadcast to me on a system primarily built to better serve entertainment arts.

High school graduation rate tops 80% for the first time in U.S. history.

Okay so this was really, really good tonight. No tongue biting or anything. They are implementing weekly activity clubs such as gardening, dance, and art (whatever the teachers themselves come up with) into the school schedule (rather than after school)...which is awesome. They are implementing a sort of leadership development program that will allow the kids to offer ideas, take on responsibilities, and have a say in their own education...choosing their own club activity from the various offerings for example.

Beware! That was how they got the Hitler Youth Clubs started in Germany. The kids could join any of the available clubs they chose. Of course there were only two clubs on offer: Hitler Youth and Star of David. Take your pick children.
Will there be snazzy uniforms and distinctive insignia?

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
The Teabillies and slackjaws of all stripes are working to get the Common Core repealed in my state. I support the CCI in general as I think the standards are good, even though implementation is and will be a shit sandwich. I just can't understand why the idiot rednecks see it as Communism or whatever it is they are on about.
Analysis: Are Common Core Opponents Just a Bunch of Crazies?
Quote:
The poll was meant to find out where Republican primary voters stand on the Common Core.
The poll first found that a significant minority, 40 percent, of Republican primary voters do not know what the Common Core is. This is unsurprising because other polls have found similar results.

There are plenty of rational arguments for why the Common Core State Standards Initiative is not the solution to reforming public education in the United States.
That the program is part of a liberal conspiracy to indoctrinate children and turn them into the homosexual slaves of a future totalitarian global government, is not one of them.

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
Here's an interesting article that a colleague sent to me today. Judging from own experiences and those of my colleagues, a lot of teachers are indeed feeling exhaustion, a level of frustration that sometimes approaches despair, helplessness, and a sense of having been turned into scapegoats. And that's at the college level. I shudder to think what it must be like to teach in primary education.

Common core is an attempt to remove white privilege, according to those who wrote the common core standards.

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
Lol I like all the old white dudes go "ooow, hiss" when he points out white dudes got privilege... as they sit and watch a panel of 6 white dudes and 1 white woman.
And who is this "Campus Reform" that posted this video? Why a project of the Leadership Institute. LI's main goal is to "increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists" (do conservative groups ever pay attention to their acronyms?)

Had he said he was trying to correct the cultural and racial bias found in educational standards and materials, few people would have gotten mad. The word privilege has become some sort of imagined oppressive thing like the term political correctness, though, and a whole lot of stupid people get all argle bargle over it.

Re: Fucking education! How does it work?
Wellesley decided to fight back against grade inflation. The results are pretty interesting.
I am including this quotation just to make AML's eye-twitch when he sees that Economics is defined as part of the humanities.
Quote:
But students were more likely to switch within disciplines (from sociology to economics, for example) than they were to leave the humanities.
