Did Tycho really claim the asteroids orbited the earth like that ... like a hula hoop? I think instead they just shouldn't be shown in that version.

I don't think they even knew asteroids existed then. Telescopes weren't that good.

So, yeah, they didn't then. That's 200 years after Tycho died, and more than 250 after Copernicus died.

Ceres isn't an asteroid--it's spherical.

But your point still remains valid; if it took until then to discover the largest object, by far, in the asteroid belt, how then could asteroids therein have been seen?

I don't think the animation is meant to suggest that Copernicus or Brahe discovered asteroids, merely that there placement is an assumption of where they might be on the respective models.
