Use the Delete Anchor Point tool to remove the anchor at the top left, then use the Pen tool to stretch the handles on the two points to either side of the deleted point until the upper curve of the 'S' is smooth.

You crush its will to live. Not all at once, of course! Slowly, over the course of decades. You know, get it married and in a dead end job with 3 kids. Maybe not the most efficient way but it's traditional.
