Things are better - less property damage, more sit ins. Curfew has been extended for a couple of days but the national guard is pulling some troops out.

I love the sign language interpreter the governor has during his briefings. She's awesome.

A lot of whites are among the most enthusiastic about attacking cops and looting stores. I find that patronizing, another form of cultural appropriation. They don't have standing. They are not black. I'm lumping all those who want to get physical together because there isn't a practical way to distinguish between them. Finger pointing and CT's are flying everywhere, it just adds to the confusion and makes things worse.

I'm going to say I kind of called it here. George Floyd's brother spoke at a curbside memorial. I wish I could find a full quote of what he said but naturally every report is just snippets. In partial summary, he said the violence is overshadowing the message, it's only damaging the minority physical community, and is therefor not going to change anything, and that if he isn't being destructive, that's a cue that others should follow, since his family is most aggrieved.

I've heard a number of black leaders and black protesters voice similar thoughts on the news. I guess you could dismiss them as the media cherry picking the message they want to push. You really can't dismiss George's own brother. He has unassailable standing in the matter.

A bunch of white kids showing up and tearing up a minority community where they don't live to protest police brutality on minorities, hogging up the spotlight? No man, that ain't gonna cut it.

In my first duty assignment in Germany, I got a black room mate from Texas. He had a cowboy hat, big rodeo buckle, cowboy boots, the works. At first I thought something must be wrong with him. I didn't know there was such a thing as the black cowboys in Texas! He was telling me all about it, rodeos, actual cattle drives. I was like, cool man, black cowboys! 40 years later I still remember his name.

From what I’ve heard, cowboys were historically latinos and black guys. The white cowboy is gentrification and relatively new.

The Minnesota Department of Human Rights will launch an investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department after filing a civil rights charge related to the death of George Floyd

They are going to look at police practices for the past 10 years. This is LONG overdue.

And the Minneapolis Public School district ended it's contract with the police as "resource officers." About time for that too.

It makes sense, as I heard multiple stores were looted, and it’s certainly out of towners (not just because some have been caught looting elsewhere).

I’ve wandered around Walnut Creek and let me tell you, they’re not yelling at anyone but Grandma and her grandkids. Downtown might be a bit of a hub but it’s mostly gentrified suburbs. So much so they even have cute free public transit busses that look like trollies that do rounds about the town so that the whole family can take a trip out when they come to visit.

The optics of the cops is just so amazing, do they think people will welcome their occupying force, cause these *are* the fucking white moderates that are happy to look the other way so long as the cops are bashing brown heads in another town. These are the ‘liberals’ who believe the system still works if you give it time, and have defended cops with “I’m sure he had a good reason to ...” Watching the system go “Surprise! Banana Republic!”

There are going to be a lot of white people asking to speak to the manager before the week is up!

Something very similar happened in Raleigh on Monday.

Owner of a gay-friendly bar was out front on guard against vandalism, after it somehow got tagged with white supremacist graffiti. He set up a first aid station, and gave out water and granola bars. The cops got "an anonymous tip" (some super secret source let them know what he had been doing in plain sight on the sidewalk for several hours) that he was giving protesters water...and obviously this needed to be stopped. The handing out water.

So they came and pointed their guns at him and fired flash bangs at him while he retreated with his hands up.

It's pretty easy to see the thrill running up those trotters while taking aim at a black guy - who might also be gay! for a bonus - for no reason.

They also used expired tear gas.
