Default Old people confused by technology

I swore we had a tech help thread, but I can't find it, so this is the new one now.

So we have a double VPN problem, where we have a VPN on the router, and Matlock sometimes needs to log into a work VPN on his computer, and it won't let him when we're coming from our own VPN. We can just switch it on and off and that's OK, I guess, but also, I have a couple other routers, and therein lies the question:

Could I get an ethernet switch to split the traffic from the modem to the router with VPN and a Matlock work router? So that everything EXCEPT Matlock's desktop would go through our VPN?

I feel like there's something wrong with this plan, but I'm really tired and stupid.

Since this doesn't look like a "have you tried turning it off and on again" problem (I mean, that's what you're currently doing), I'm going to with the next standard confused-older-end-user question ... are you sure that's what's set up? A permanent VPN on the router (why would you do that) - not NAT (pretty much always needed)?

The complicated answer you're probably looking for is yes.

Yes, you could v probably split his desktop on a different segment and not have the VPN apply to that. You might not even need an extra box - lots of home modems have more than one port. Would need details of your existing kit.

I know ridiculously little about home networking things, but yeah, it's a VPN (L2TP) connecting from the router.

I'm doing it because we just had to switch ISPs to the one I hate the most of all of them when this happened. An actual old person thing I have encountered is that I don't like fucking with stuff like I used to, so I'm more about doing things the easiest way than the best way these days, so I just found a VPN provider that doesn't keep logs, and set the router up with that. And I do not see a way to isolate a device. Maybe there's one, but I'm not seeing it.

This is what I have. I have a standalone modem with one port that goes to the router, so all our traffic goes through that router. I do, however, have a couple of older routers that are compatible with pretty much all the big third party firmwares like DD-WRT and Tomato and, uh, the ones I forget. It's been a while (and they're actually still dusty), but I think at least one of them might already have one of those on it already. So what I was thinking is that if I could get something to split the traffic from the modem, effectively just turning that one port into two, I could attach Matlock's computer to one of those routers so he could log into his work VPN from it, and even have extra VPN-less connections in case we need them for something else, I guess.

I don't know if that'd work, though. I don't have a switch or a splitter or anything to test it with, and don't want to buy one if it's not likely to work.

And I'm definitely open to better ways to go about it.

And you want to basically put in a box that would effectively give you another port bypassing the router?

:boythink:

Is this all ethernet cably goodness? Distance from mr pea's desktop to router & modem?

Wait the fuck a minute. How did it not even occur to me that I don't need a separate router?

Of course I don't. If I get a splitter or something, I can just hook him directly up to the modem itself, since it's just his computer I'm thinking about isolating.

I guess I was just fixating on those old routers or something, looking for a nail for those hammers.

I TOLD YOU I WAS CONFUSED.

Anyways, yeah, all this is located in one small office space. Matlock and I both have our desktops plus the printer in here, with the router and modem, and we ran ethernet connections to a couple other rooms for other stuff. Everything else is wireless.

Now:
:phone: (mirrored)Hello router Hello ISP:phone:
ISP's edge router --- modem --- customer router --- all your kit

Hmm:
:phone: (mirrored)Hello router Hello ISP:phone:
ISP's edge router --- modem --splitter-- customer router --- all your kit
+-------- MATLOCKDESKTOP
:lalala: :plzhold:

What you might want to look at is putting one of your spare routers as the ISP terminating point, and the VPN one daisychained from it
:phone: (mirrored)Hello router Hello ISP:phone:
ISP's edge router --- modem --- other router --- original router with VPN --- all your kit
+-------- MATLOCKDESKTOP

The first thing I thought of was creating a virtual network, one for Matlock and no VPN, and one with everything else and a VPN.

I have no idea how you'd actually go about doing it, or even if the routers in question can do it.

Except for BASIC INTEGRITY AND HUMAN DECENCY, and a fundamental concern for their customers' choices! Comcast cares about that kind of thing, you know!

The problem with putting one of the older routers in front is that they're old and don't work at the speeds we get. That wouldn't be a problem for just Matlock's computer, but the rest of our stuff probably wouldn't run well.

There are, however, newer routers at the thrift stores most of the time, so I might be able to go pick one of those up and try it. Or I guess I could try it with an old one just to see if that works.

The other thing, which I was assuming we had ruled out but should probably check again, is "just" configuring the existing router to exclude MATLOCKDESKTOP (for that is its name, now and forevermore) from the VPN. Possibly a virtual network as sr71 says.

What is its make and model? Presumably you guys set up the VPN in the first place not Bomblast. Presumably (not quite as strongly) the router has lots of options in config menus ...

And if not, install an open router OS on it ...

Ackshually, some time back when Matlock got a new Windows, I was setting it up with their stupid wizard, and when it came to the part to name the device, it said to enter it like the example shown. In that example, it was called Sanchez Family Computer. As such, his desktop is named Sanchez Family Computer.

And good grief, I haaaate anyone touching my stuff, so they did not set it up. In fact, two of the techs from the other ISP got on my computer and I haaaated it. Fortunately, I have a left hand mouse and a clicky keyboard that they didn't like, and one guy got all confused that Google didn't come up automatically. I had this idea some time back that I should learn Dvorak in part so that it would add a new layer of confusion for people who tried to use my computer, and I was super-regretting I never did it.

But enough about my personal trials and tribulations. FOR NOW.

The router is an Archer C7 v.4, and it looks like maybe that might work with their default firmware. Like I said, I'm not good with this stuff, so I'll have to look into it. Also, there is at least one of the open firmwares available for it, although I'm a little scared of bricking it.

I had a dig into guides for that model but as far as I can see it doesn't even have a vpn client (just a vpn server for accessing your net from outside). So I'm missing something. Anyway, wherever you previously set up the vpn client in the router's menus, look for something like "selective routing" or "policy rules".

Yeah, it's in the Network settings, but 1) I can't even do anything right now without interrupting some very important video games, and 2) I'm running into other annoying things in the firmware now and thinking maybe I do need to just suck it up and install something else.

I already got distracted and ended up overproofing my sourdough, so I'm done thinking about this for a minute.

Thanks, Joe.

Wouldn't it be much easier to just ship Matlock off to a nursing home?

Not sure if nursing homes are known for their high-speed highly-configurable internet access, Mr Light.

There's a (really bad) nursing home right at the bottom of the street, and I can see its wifi signal from here. I'll call first to make sure they don't have a VPN.
