NIGHTFALL
She walks the the crowded streets towards the train station, moving through the mob of commuters gracefully, like a leaf twisting and floating through the eastern winds. Numbness washes over her as she sees two young lovers, chasing after each other through the tunnels leading to the platform.
The doors to the train slide open and, as she enters clothed from head to toe in Lolita-styled black, the ribbons in her hair become animated by the exchanging of air pressures between the train and the outside.
Several of her fans recognize her as she enters but are halted by the utter look of sadness in her eyes. They view adoringly from a distance. She sits quietly as the train departs, having the stillness of a prized doll displayed on a collector's shelf.
As the train approaches it's stop near the seaport, thoughts of Light begin to wash over her. She has given him all of her, even allowing him to use her, all in the hopes that he would one day return a fraction of this love. She has worshiped him. Though Light says he loves her, his actions speak differently. She had overheard Light expressing his love to former classmate and Kira spokesperson, Kiyomi Takada, the words still echo inside her...
"I know Misa and I are still together but she means nothing to me, Kiyomi. She does not share the same intellectual capacity or vision as you and I do. When she is no longer of any use to me, it will be over between us and then we can be by one another's side in this new world which I will create...We'll create it together, Kiyomi. Her heart is shattered. It cannot be repaired.
She walks slowly along the bridge as the only participant in her own funeral procession. From behind, her silhouette is contoured by the radiant orange of sunset as she climbs over the west rail and steps onto the ledge, looking down at the harbor below.
A single teardrop glistens as it moves down her cheek and rolls off her face, beginning its long descent downward to become one with the sea.
It sparkles in contrast to the blue water below as she follows it to her end.
